January 10, 2007 at 13:41 #35489The best sportsman tend to be ruthless and stretch the meaning of the word and unfortunately thats the reality of it.. Michael Schumacher didn’t win all those titles by being a jolly nice chap.
Win at all costs tends to be their motto. I’m sure Tony McCoy doesn’t mind jocking people off horses..
Yass L. Piggot was a name that surely brightened up a racecard in those bygone days of stuffed trains that nervously awaited the excitement and luxury of a midweek derby. People ate fish’n chips and lamb dripping on bread without any conscience in thos days. I arrived late but not too late, and was there at tatters when he rode the Minstrel – saw nothing of the race or the finish but somehow you just new something exciting had happened seeing all the arms. I watched the finish of the race on the late news. I was a fish’nchip paper racegoer and was happy to see an ankle.
I think Piggot has done more to stimulate the love for british racing than any other jockey and of course, not wanting to sound nationalistic, he was a brit, which made it harder for the early day dry kangaroo landscape of Scobie and Hutchie to compete against, particularly in the green heartlands. Dettori has helped enamour the sport to a younger audience, but of course its an uphill grind now that entertainment is a worldwidw business.
The tax evasion was three million and not a amall affair in fact quite near to the windmill in the mind Thomas Crowne affair which was four million – and I’ve never know an honour being given back. As for Piggot’s predatory approach to horses and particularly the fillies, it was possibly the necessary quality to give him that extra lust at the backend of a race. I remember him asked on TV what he considerd to be the best horse he had ever ridden. There was a long pause and he eventually muttered – they were all pretty good really ! That was Piggot
flatcapgamble… If Piggot shook a man’s hand there was something going on ;)
