I wouldn’t rate somersby in the same low category as nacarat or golan way. they haven’t consistently got so close to master minded or finished 2nd in an arkle.
December 26, 2011 at 09:17 #384109I never said he was I drew a line and he came out on the wrong side of it.
He could beat the other two by a distance and still not be in the first 3.
But as you brought it up, Nacarat has won a Racing Post Chase, a Charlie hall, and The Totesbowl at Aintree his winnings are more than twice that of Somersby’s
Somsersby’s close proximity to Master Minded who idled in front that day flattered him.
In 3 other attempts the nearest he got was 3 lengths and considering he was getting 7lbs that’s more like 10 lengths.
While Somersby is the highest rated at the moment they are both at best 162 horses.
Somersby was actually given a 162 when beaten 8 1/2 lengths by Master Minded which seemed fair then he shot up to a crazy 170 but then dropped to his 166 which is questionable
Master Minded was rated 178 on all those occasions and as he was giving 7 lbs on the most recent occasion and 1 length is a pound then somewhere the Handicapper found reason not to drop Somersby back to a 162 or even a 161.
I think he belongs on the side of the line where I put him but we’ll find out today. As I said in an earlier post he’ll need an awful lot to go wrong with a good few of the others to go anywhere near winning this.

December 26, 2011 at 15:19 #384157All heads must bow, all tongues must profess – Kauto Star is the greatest of all-time. Incredible.
December 26, 2011 at 15:19 #384158Had the feeling that Somersby would finish infront of Master Minded.
Kauto Star another amazing performance.
Got to go to Cheltenham, he should be favourite for the Gold Cup now, he deserves it.
December 26, 2011 at 15:20 #384159What a horse. Lost for words
December 26, 2011 at 15:20 #384161oh my what a wonderful advert for jump racing
December 26, 2011 at 15:23 #384163Legend of a horse and a jockey, the latter is possibly a reason why Long Run may never scale the same heights. Waley Cohen is not top class.
Today is Kauto’s day though. Again.

I’m Speechless for once!
December 26, 2011 at 15:27 #384165That’ll be the day
That would bring tears to a glass eye. 5 King George’s in 6 years will never ever be done again.
I thought Sam rode a perfect race on Long Run who stuck his neck out and fought like a tiger.
Captain Chris has run a blinder and had me slightly worried but looked like he blew up allowing Long Run to regain second.
The race was brilliant and the perfect Xmas present for every racing fan.
December 26, 2011 at 15:43 #384170A superb performance from a truly magnificent racehorse!
December 26, 2011 at 15:50 #384173You f****** Beauty oh ye of little faith.
Must admit to a tiny little doubt that it came too soon after his Betfair triumph , but never been so happy to be wrong!
Fabulous, amazing, stunning, wonderful! When they called him Kauto STAR they were not wrong! What a horse!!!!!!!!!!!
My best Christmas present!!!!!!!!
December 26, 2011 at 15:52 #384174Brilliant performance.
Kauto Star is the best horse of the last 40 years.
I think he’s almost as good now, as he’s ever been. Rather than age last season, his below parr performances might have been more to do with running in January. When most of the trainer’s horses were running poorly (a virus?). Setting him back and then not over that at Cheltenham.
Long Run probably ran as good as any last season. Jumped better than usual, up to when Ruby put the pressure on.
Henderson’s horse still deserves to be favourite for the Gold Cup. Staying on all the way to the line there and more of a stamina test will help. Whether he should be half the price (3/1) of Kauto (7/1) is doubtful (imo). Even with him being 12 years old.
Captain Chris ran his best race yet. Needs to improve his jumping to continue progress.
Somersby didn’t stay, going well turning in but found little. Although it could also be temperament.
Golan Way needs to lead and this was out of his grade. Though credit to connections for having a go.
Sad Master Minded pulled up lame. But with the big two 17 lengths ahead of the rest, MM would not have been good enough, even at his best. Hope he’s ok.
Value Is EverythingDecember 26, 2011 at 15:54 #384176Firstly, well done Team Kauto, marvellous stuff.
Secondly. I sincerely hope Henderson puts his foot down now. With AP & Barry Geraghty twiddling their thumbs in the weighing room SWC gets to indulge his hobby. If one of the former turned up as a city trader we’d laugh at them.
Come on Nicky, you’ve got a class horse, he deserves a class jockey.
And I had no financial interest in the race.
December 26, 2011 at 15:59 #384179It not ultimately up to NH though Wolf.
December 26, 2011 at 16:05 #384180I don’t understand all this about Sam Waley-Cohen. He was winning last year on the same horse, why would he be riding any worse now. The horse belongs to his family so he has the right to take the mount, let those who foot the bill make the choice. The trainer can’t put his foot down, Mr Waley-Cohen can.
December 26, 2011 at 16:08 #384181Long Run was bought for Sam to ride.
Sam has won a King George and a Gold Cup on him. You can’t expect him to win every race on Long Run.
