What are we making of the ground – officially good (good to firm in places) but it would appear a fair bit closer to good to soft with no time having broken standard as Baaeed got nearest being just under 1sec slower (the other races have been between 2 to almost 4sec slower).
August 17, 2022 at 16:19 #1611404On Official Ratings I think the race should be rated:
was………..to
128 Baaeed 135
…………………6 1/2 (13 lbs)
124 Mishriff 122
…………………2 1/2 (5 lbs)
115 Sir Busker 117
…………………Short Head
117 Dubai Honour 116Native Trail and High Definition well below form.
If Baaeed is rated 135 then that would equal his sire Sea The Stars OR of 135.
Interesting that Sir Busker beat Dubai Honour a nose last time out and a short head today.

The ground is slower than last year for sure.
First three races all much slower than last year 0.41-2.08, 0.66-3.05, 3.53-0.83 fast.
Baaeed was 0.9 slow compared to Mishriff’s 2.48 fast last year.
I think it’s to Baaeed’s further credit that he’s done it on relatively dead ground.

Really really good horse who will now be rated around 132 i’d guess
Mishriff ran very well tbf
Baaeed was just different class to him
I imagine most of the opposition will be scared off now
August 17, 2022 at 16:30 #1611408Looking at his record, his biggest winning margins have all come with some juice in the ground, twice on good to soft and this one today (I can’t believe there is any good to firm places unless its on the infield of the course).
August 17, 2022 at 16:32 #1611409Baaeed will now have his final race in the Champion Stakes at Ascot.
I personally think Mishriff ran about 4lb below the form he showed to win this last year, in fact I had him on the same number he ran to in the Eclipse.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 17, 2022 at 16:33 #1611410On the Timeform scale (which is not “inflated”, just slightly different to the OR’s like centigrade and farenheit):
was…….what they may rate him after today
134 Baaeed 140
………………..6 1/2 lengths (13 lbs)
129 Mishriff 127…And if Timeform do rate Baaeed 140 then that would also match their 140 Sea The Stars rating.
If they think the ground is a bit on the soft side they may choose to rate the horses on less than 2 lbs a length. But I’d still expect Timeform to rate him at least 138.
Value Is EverythingAugust 17, 2022 at 17:13 #1611419Timeform now rate Baaeed 137.
That’s quite modest by their RELATIVELY “inflated” standards.

August 17, 2022 at 17:16 #1611424Maybe they’ve had a butchers at the entries and concluded there might be something better than Youmzain in the race.

The Dark Ages, presumably.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 17, 2022 at 17:35 #1611431Ah, I see prior to today Sir Busker and Dubai Honour were both rated 119 by Timeform for their last time out performances. So both being beaten 9 lengths Baaeed 137 makes sense.
@ 2 lbs per length 119 + 18 = 137
Don’t quite understand why Mishriff has been given 123 and not 124 though.Value Is EverythingAugust 17, 2022 at 17:48 #1611435Stunning performance from Baaeed today. Hard not to love this horse. The influence of Urban Sea on the breed is nothing short of phenomenal isn’t it?
August 17, 2022 at 19:48 #1611471He was great today, can’t knock him. Not convinced myself by this argument that we need superstars for the good of the sport. What I’ve experienced in my time of following the sport which I’m only in my 30’s so there will be people with much deeper experience/knowledge than myself is its dreadful for the sport. If this is to be his last season then he’ll get a grand send off in a match race with his stablemate Dubai Honour and Sir Busker. Vadeni diverted to the Arc to take the easy route which is good for the Arc but dreadful for Champions Stakes. What’s good for the sport about a 1/20 poke outclassing horses miles below his ability? That’s not his fault but unless Vadeni takes him on or Mishriff again and even they’ll get put in their place probably then what is the point? I’m not even talking about the betting side of it here, more the sporting spectacle, we need competition not walkovers. Everyone thinks the SPL is a farmers league in football because there are only two teams. Same principle all over sport, domination is not good.

Agree, absolutely nothing. Connections are taking the safe option to ensure he remains undefeated, which is apparently important.
It is the equivalent of a top class tennis player saying “I don’t really want to play in that tournament at Wimbledon. I will play in a smaller tournament somewhere else where I have no chance of losing.”
August 18, 2022 at 10:43 #1611549Those that do not fully appreciate exceptional ability can concentrate on handicaps.
Was Frankel good for our sport?
