DJ,
In his interview on ATR this morning, Jonjo indicated that the Charlie Hall would be the first port of call for Iris’s Gift, ground permitting.

December 15, 2007 at 22:52 #5981I’ve been of the opinion since the Betfair Chase that Exotic Dancer was an absolute EW cert for the King George, but have to confess to losing confidence in the last couple of weeks based on the form of the yard. Towards the end of November he had a couple of shorties than got turned over without good reason and then he went 11 days without a single runner. Since then, 6 more losers, only one of which (Castlecrossings) could be said to have run in any way close to form.
Anyone heard anything?
December 15, 2007 at 23:07 #130756I’m beginning to wonder if the dreaded ‘virus’ has returned, remember 04/05 season round about this time he shut down. Anyway it makes sense for JP to spread his horses about, just send a few to Nicholls, now that would be interesting.
December 15, 2007 at 23:11 #130757I’m just wondering if there’s a short term bug around or something that is causing the yard problems.
I’d be amazed if he paid ‘a few million quid’ for Franchoek. I’d guess, and it purely is just a guess at somewhere around 200k.
December 15, 2007 at 23:13 #130758Marb,
Is Franchoek definitely staying with Alan King though? Has this been confirmed? I confess to not reading anything about it.
Franchoek would have had to run under Alan King’s stable today as JP only purchased him last night. If JP hasn’t confirmed the horse will stay with King, then I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s moved.
Does anybody know? Thanks in advance.
Mike
December 15, 2007 at 23:15 #130759Do you class "jobbing" as a virus though?
Everyone knows what O’Neill is up to and anyone who backs his horses outside of 4 days in March normally gets what they deserve. Steer clear at all costs.
December 15, 2007 at 23:17 #130760I would guess the horse will stay with King. Even when he’s bought horses privately in the past, they have tended to stay with their current trainer i.e. First Gold, Baracouda, L’Ami, Innox, Foreman, Reveillez, Flagship Uberalles, etc.
December 15, 2007 at 23:28 #130761Thanks DJ and Marb.
Marb, there wasn’t any money for Elliot’s horse today, but it does show that the Irish do perhaps have a stronger group of novice hurdlers at this stage. I don’t think it needs me to remind people the Irish always do very well in the novice events at Cheltenham, and I have my eye firmly fixed on a few of their hurdlers.

December 15, 2007 at 23:29 #130762Have to say it confused me slightly when i saw Frankchoek today and he was in the JP McManus colours.
Seems like there is more than first thought about the Jonjo O’Neill yard.

The Elliot horse was pretty easy to back, 15/2 out to 10’s and I don’t think there was anything sinister in the jockeys situation. According to a story in today’s RP, the transfer of ownership was done shortly before 4pm whereas I think the jockey would have to have been confirmed by 1pm.
I know the Elliot horse was quietly fancied, had similar form on the Flat to Franchoek and was also receiving weight today.
December 15, 2007 at 23:35 #130764JP likes a gamble – I think that’s one of the best known things in racing, take a look through the various summer cards – you’ll regularly see a 6/4 or 11/10 O’Neill horse get stuffed and then later in the day a 12/1 shot from the same yard etc. win.
I’ve no idea what JP gets out of it – he might just be a dodgy trainer but Exotic Dancer can’t be where he is purely on natural ability can he>?

I can’t see any substance to that assertion. From the beginning of May to the end of September this year, O’Neill trained 49 winners, of which 33 were fav or joint-fav. the biggest price winner during that period was Pantherus (16/5/07) at 14/1, and the second biggest price winner was Read All About It at 8/1 (22/5/07).
For the same period the previous year, of the 37 winners O’Neill trained, 18 were favs.
December 15, 2007 at 23:51 #130767I didn’t have time to do the exact research DJ but clearly my impression appears to be wrong. Would be interested to know his winners/runners ratio over the same time period.
December 15, 2007 at 23:59 #130768Not 100% sure these are correct as I’ve only checked them once and they also include the odd Flat runner but;
May – Sep 07 49 wins from 250 runs = 19.6%
May – Sep 06 37 wins from 238 runs = 15.6%What a shame I have nothing better to do on a Saturday night!
December 16, 2007 at 00:25 #130770Yes, and Mcmanus has aquired another trainer today in Alan King, as he now owns that Franchoek. What i’m getting at is that I think the problem is serious throughtout the whole operation, and in my eyes Jonjo should have been replaced years ago. How frustrating for JP when you’ve just paid probably a few million quid for a horse the day before a "big" race that your retained jockey does you on the 10/1 shot. Says it all for me, and believe me i’m not revelling in it, I want to see the operation succeed aswell, but right now with the form the stable’s in we’re a million miles from that at the moment.
Would’nt worry about Exotic Dancer, Jonjo does well with "second string" owners horses
You want to replace Jonjo you want to see him succeed….how many faces do you have?
They are life time long friends and all yard go through bad patches……you have no idea what you are talking about. JP has an good understanding of racing and knows you puts down your money and takes your chances.
Viruses come and go, Good trainers and friends like Jonjo are a bit harder to find
What rubbish about JP being frustrated. If you get done you get done and by whom it doesn’t matter…..what do you think your retained Jockey should stop the 10/1 shot that did you?
I don’t, JP don’t and Im fookin sure Jonjo don’t. That’s racing!!!!
Jonjo is a 1st rate trainer one of the best in the country and deserves every thing he has because he has worked damn well hard for it.
Sure he is no angel..hell everyone knows that, but he would never goose an owner deliberately…if he thinks your horse will win he’ll tell you if he thinks it’s stable companion is a danger he’ll tell you.
It wouldn’t matter to Jonjo if you were the queen of England or if you owned a cart horse that he trained he shows the same loyalty to all. Sometimes 2 owners want to run their horses in the same race and both run on merit….if the 33/1 shot wins and beats the 5/4 shot such is racing…Jonjo doesn’t make the book, that’s the bookies job….doesn’t make the trainer a crook either………..makes him a fair man.
December 16, 2007 at 22:09 #130853No runners tomorrow, but plenty of entries for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and it will be interesting to see how many are declared and run well or poorly.
