Can’t wait for another cracking day at Newbury with the kiddies and meeting the legend that is…..Nathan Hughes!!!! For those of you that don’t remember, we were meeting at last year’s Lockinge meeting and I somehow managed to lose my wallet in the car park (I say “lose” – it was returned to me 3 months later minus all the cash!) Nath – met me in the car park and lent me £40 to get in. Pure class this man!!!

I’ve had a couple of added bets. I have looked and looked at the opening race at Newbury but it looks very trappy to me. If I was to have a bet it would be on My Dream Boat and I might have a few quid at the course but I worry that it will be a crawl which won’t suit him. So I’ll probably just watch. In the second race I am on Private Matter. This one has soft ground form and beat the French Guineas winner last time out! He has a penalty but is race-fit and should be there or thereabouts.

There are lots of positive reports about Mucho Applause in the next and his trainer couldn’t be in better form but another I like in the race is Glorious Forever who is unexposed off a low weight and has form on soft.

I am very hopeful that Aljezeera will run a big race in the Fillies Trial but would worry about Natavia who is by Nathaniel who thrived on soft ground. I have done them in a forecast. I have also had a little bit on her AP for the Oaks.

Fingers crossed for a great day!

    £25ew Private Matter – 5-1 – 2.20 Newbury loser
£25ew Mucho Applause 7-2 placed and Glorious Forever 9-1 loser – 2.55 Newbury
£20 rev f/c Natavia and Aljezeera 4.40 Newbury loser
Lucky 15 the above with Ribchester and Taamol
    £5 ew accumulator and trebles
    £25ew Aljezeera – 33-1 – The Oaks

A great day with Nath and his boy and my boys (photos to follow I hope Nath!).

My youngest (3 years old) got 3 winners!! Happy Days. I thought Ribchester was super impressive. He’s a proper Group 1 horse now. He was very buzzy beforehand so I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes on again for that run. Poor old Hugo Palmer looked terrible all day – very stressed. There is clearly something wrong with his stable as pretty much ALL his horses are running atrociously. I thought Lightening Spear was the pick of the paddock and will watch where he goes next as I’m sure there is a Group 1 to be had with him. The Hannon 2 year old did well to win on that ground and congratulations to Nath for picking Hawkbill who showed he retains his ability especially on that ground.

Natavia won very well and I am starting to really like Nathaniel as a sire. His progeny are very professional and clearly love going a trip especially with a bit of juice in the ground. Aljezeera ran well considering she was up against race-fit rivals and I think you will see her do well later in the year when she grows into her big frame and goes over further.

All in all a top day and a nice profit after a tough week.

A quick bet for tomorrow. I am surprised WhitecliffsofDover isn’t heavy odds on as it looks a very weak race.

    £250 win Whitecliffsofdover – 5-6 – Naas 2.40 lost

A nice day indeed Joni, always good to see you. We had wind and sunshine but at least the rain stayed away for the most part.
Your boys are very bright and a big bonus to you that they love the racing. Alex enjoyed the ex racehorse and his ice cream and £5 hotdog…
Managed to get a photo with Francesca Cumani but in doing so missed the start of Denaar’s race caught the end of it and he plugged on well.

Here’s a few photos of the boys hope the girls had a good day shopping

Thanks Theo! It DOES help persuade the wife to let me go racing when I can take two of them off her hands at the same time. It runs in the family so they never really had a chance – my great-grandad used to work at a stable in Newmarket and was racing mad. He used to get great insider information right up until the day he was asked by a certain trainer to put a few shillings on a 33-1 shot in the Cesarewitch and didn’t get the bet on. The horse hosed up, my great-grandad got the sack and never worked at Newmarket again. Ended up a hopeless gambler apparently.

What am I doing to my children??!!!

    Hi Joni and Darren
Just to prove I’m alive and well..got back into site using a proxy browser in the end but unable to use the emotivs so (wave).
Looks like a lucky 15 with the Frankels could be on the cards tomorrow (later today) Joni..so off to Paddy Power to do that, really looking forward to seeing how Rostropovich gets on, being half brother to Zoffany he could be very useful..good luck with your bets and love the pics from Lockinge Day looks like you had a great time.
Funny how racing runs in your blood my great grandad ran a book at the Curragh and I don’t think it was legal then. Jac X

Thanks Jac! Yes – hoping for a winner or two from the Frankel’s but I’m actually opposing him in the big race at Goodwood. This probably means that he will have the winner as I have noticed that I’ve only managed to back one Frankel winner all season!!! I’m a bit of a curse at present :(

I really liked Raheen House at Newbury and the form of that race couldn’t have worked out any better. He is a really big, powerful colt and it will take a good one to beat him. Monarchs Glen looked so good at Kempton and he might bounce back but I would be worried that he boiled over last time and was far too keen – might be a good in-running play for those that do that sort of thing. I have added both the Frankel’s in a combination forecast just in case!

£100 win Raheen House – 3.45 Goodwood lost
£20 combination forecast – Raheen House, Monarchs Glen, The Grand Visir

Oh I’d love to see that Nath!!

One bet today and it’s the horse you backed last time – Somehow was not convenienced by the mile of the Lockinge but still ran well and I think she will give her stablemate something to think about on this ground over this trip.

    £50ew Somehow – 5-1 – Tattersalls Gold Cup placed

Ironic how Ryan Moore was not only on the wrong horse but got in the way and hindered Somehow’s chance of winning

There’s a filly I liked last year called Bahamadan who won first time out at Windsor. She was then highly tried and wasn’t quite up to it but I see she runs today in a handicap off 83 and is 33-1! I can’t let her go unbacked just in case!!

    £25ew Bahamadan – 33-1 – 3.20 Leicester winner
