Yes it’s a bit dated.
Blah blah blah..
SHOUT THE LAST SENTENCE INTO THE CAMERAMarch 18, 2022 at 17:03 #1588604If you’re Festival needs cliches,
Just call Rent-A-Bri…March 18, 2022 at 17:19 #1588652Rent a bride … That is 😄
March 18, 2022 at 18:41 #1588718“They need to find more of the group of (typically) women in the crowd who are betting a fiver and just having a blast”.
Absolutely this. Talk to people who set aside a small amount for their bets and include it as part of the day out expenses, or who don’t bet at all but still cheer on their favourite horse because they love racing. Also people who have decent wins off very modest bets. After all the fuss about the huge bet on Energumene, when they interviewed Tony Bloom, they never even asked if it was him!
March 18, 2022 at 18:55 #1588720They think the pace is slow, they think the ground is Good to Soft, Allaho was only 1.71 seconds slow yesterday and A Plus Tard was 4.25 seconds fast today.
It is with good reason that, if I watch televised racing at all, it’s on mute.
There’s only one group of people who should be ignored even more than the media – and that’s Clerks Of Courses.
Trust the word of no one and solely rely on your own judgement.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 18, 2022 at 18:58 #1588721I don’t think it is quite
the right thing to be asking
Bloom if he was on.
Sort of bad form.
OK for him to volunteer
such a private matter
But it would have made him
look a bit mercenary if he
had replied yes and if he
had said no – people would
have probably thought he wasn’t telling the truth or
his myth would have been damaged.
Owners will start avoiding mikes if they get asked
for their banking details. As for the fiver crowd
They can be interesting.
I now consider a fiver a large bet – so it will largely depend on the magnification of your spectacles !
!March 18, 2022 at 18:58 #1588722Well said Tonge, I’m definitely one of those women and I’d still feel like a winner if my horse got up safely after a fall and I know you would too. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 18, 2022 at 19:56 #1588762Totally agree Tonge and Triptych, I always assume I will lose whatever money i bet with, so on the odd occasions I don’t it makes it all the more exciting! It’s the love of horses that is the main appeal for me and seeing them all (horses and jockeys) come home safe is the most important part.
March 18, 2022 at 20:10 #1588772Such magnanimity is a rare gift Tippy and Illavim.
I suggest it will depend on the size of your bets I suppose, but to a lot of
people on here showing a profit at Cheltenham is the major contributor that regulates the size, or not, of their enjoyment.March 18, 2022 at 20:11 #1588773Home safe is by far most important. Anyone who doesn’t think it shouldn’t be part of racing.
Kind of agree with Gamble re bad form asking Tony Bloom about his bet but, given they’d talked about little else in the run-up to this race somebody should have asked the question (seen it done with JP and others). As a Brighton fan, I know Tony may well have told them to **** right off, which is fair enough & maybe why they didn’t ask!
March 18, 2022 at 20:55 #1588782I get it now, Hoiles commentary is for the visually impaired such is the detail down to the level of jockeys passing wind as they go round.
I was watching the last race from Cheltenham at 5.30 on the Coral website which had a Racing TV logo on the top right corner. Whoever it was that commentary had just enough detail to make it enjoyable without becoming too noticeable.
March 18, 2022 at 22:57 #1588807Gamble I understand the enjoyment gained from making a profit from the horses you bet on that’s why I sit up half the night pondering over the form and having a big win based on that research makes me happy but I never put on bet larger than I can afford to lose because that would make me unhappy, my fault and mine alone if I lost it.
The difference between those who love racing and horses and those who purely bet for profit boils down to how you (plural) answer the following questions…
(a)If you had a bet on Galopin Des Champs on Thursday did you swear when he came down without a thought for his wellbeing?
(b) If you had a bet on Bob Ollinger did you cheer when GDC came down?
I backed GDC, only a modest bet, but I was horrified when I thought he was injured at the last but elated when it was realised he had his leg tangled in the reins and was sound, that feeling was as good as if not better than winning.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 19, 2022 at 00:16 #1588823What really turned me on to the real majesty of
horses was leafing through Gulliver’s travels at a late age.
Few of your sex Tippi have started wars, Boudicca and Maggie Thatch would have been the exceptions, but I suggest women are greater nuturers than men. The Greens are full of them and they are meant to save the planet.
I am in aweMarch 19, 2022 at 05:52 #1588839I agree with your post, Triptych.
It was after the Grand National one year when the TV camera panned down the and I could see at least two lifeless bodies of horses on the course and decided then to stop watching NH racing.
I am aware there are fatalities on the flat and it sickens me whenever it happens. One minute a superb flowing gallop, the next a hobbling cripple with, in most cases, a very short life expectancy.
Horses are born to either work or be ridden they are such kind, beautiful and easily-trained animals that they deserve to live a full life and pass peacefully.
Sorry about the sentimentality but I really do love horses and being around them.
March 19, 2022 at 06:50 #1588842If i had been a bookie and Gleason had thrust his hand into my satchel to grab a wad of notes I’d have laid him out. Cameras or no cameras. Odious little man.
March 19, 2022 at 07:26 #1588846Nicely put Colin not sentimental at all just a love of the horse who has no option but to follow where men/women lead them.
The Purple Poppy for war horses this year was a recognition of what a great debt we owe them.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 19, 2022 at 08:11 #1588852The obsession with the itv 7 really bugs me. I think most folk bet sensibly and do get excited if they win a few quid. I get just as much of a kick out of telling other folk tips for the national or the Derby. Told my then mad gambling mate to back swain at 20 to 1 for the King George. He won a wedge,I didn’t back but just to see his face when it won was worth it. Didn’t back anything this week but told anybody who would listen than energumine and flooring porter would win. Two very chuffed guys at my work. I just smiled.
