Bizarrely, I’ve met the lady (doing a Point-to-Point live stream broadcast of all things).
For me, the chief positive about her was that she wasn’t Cornelius Lysaght (who anchored the Show).
Forever bitter about being axed by the BBC – some might say he was fortunate to last as long as he did there for IMO he was, as my American friends would say: “aggressively positioned for his capabilities.”

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 3, 2024 at 18:13 #1679664Was today’s picture quality really poor today or is it my telly? Final Score and rugby were fine…
February 3, 2024 at 21:34 #1679692Given it’s been so long since I attempted to switch my telly on, I’m not actually sure if it still works (will find out Election Night as plan to have BBC1 on for a minute for the Exit Poll at 10pm), I’m possibly not the best person to ask.
Oh, you weren’t specifically asking me – that’s me told, then.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 3, 2024 at 21:42 #1679693I’m with you Tonge it was terrible especially Musselburgh.
The more I know the less I understand.
February 3, 2024 at 22:57 #1679705Musselburgh was a Racing TV feed, which are cr@p. One of the cameras was shuddering, due to the wind. It’s always the same when ITV ‘take’ RTV feeds.
ITV pics, from Sandown, were fine.Hopefully, one day RTV will fold and SSR will take over.
February 4, 2024 at 00:44 #1679723Thanks Wilts. Not sure the excuse of “wind” is plausible for the paddock footage but does make sense for the course shots.
I do find the poor camera work depressing. Surely a civilisation that put humans on the moon can, for example, devise a means to keep rain off the camera lens. Sometimes conditions are extreme and little can be done but often you think a decent protective hood or a quick wipe over with a cloth would do the trick.
February 4, 2024 at 08:47 #1679747There’s no such thing as an RTV feed, as RTV don’t have cameras covering the racing. They’re only allowed one camera on the racecourse and that’s the one pointed at the presenter, which is also used to give ground level paddock shots at some tracks.
RTV and Sky both get their pictures from whichever company holds the contract for coverage at the course in question – e.g SIS.
February 4, 2024 at 10:17 #1679763For one it’s worth there are four main camera positions at Musselburgh:
1. Stands which covers closing stages and half the back straight.
2. End of the back straight on a cherrypicker which gives a head on down the back (presumably used as the camera patrol) and round the far bend.
3. Cherrypicker about 4 furlongs out covering the far bend and early in the home straight.
4. Cherrypicker parked in Balcarres Street, gives a head on down the straight and provides the head on finish shown as a replay after the race. This will be the ‘camera patrol’ for the home straight. Position is also used for some paddock shots.Presumably in strong winds, as we had early in the meeting yesterday, it can be tough to hold the camera steady when you are on a cherrypicker.
February 4, 2024 at 12:57 #1679796It’s great that ITV are showing the Dublin Racing Festival this afternoon, and on their main channel no less. But it was unfortunate that the very first thing that Oli Bell said was that it was providing clues for the Cheltenham Festival. And then the subsequent coverage is still mentioning Cheltenham obsessively.
The Dublin Racing Festival is a fantastic weekend of racing to be enjoyed in its own right. I totally understand that implications for Cheltenham will need to be discussed, but more effort should be made to present a big meeting like this as a spectacle in its own right.

February 4, 2024 at 15:33 #1679865Two days of Premier racing at Musselburgh, close to £500k in prize money and ITV don’t have single person on course. I guess when you are not a Jockey Club track…
February 4, 2024 at 15:40 #1679867Todays big interview with Ed Chamberlin in the RP was worth a read for those like me who didn’t know his professional background.
February 4, 2024 at 15:40 #1679869“Oli Bell said was that it was providing clues for the Cheltenham Festival.”
And there was me thinking the primary role of the Cheltenham Festival is to provide clues for Punchestown and the following year’s DRF.
That’s exactly how insulting what Bell said was to this cracking meeting which condenses the quality into two days.

March 12, 2024 at 14:33 #1684885Oh for the days when racing got by with three presenters.
This army of millions nowadays doesn’t add anything, I’m afraid to say.
March 12, 2024 at 17:24 #1685011On Hills’s site earlier: “3.30: Leonna picks State Man”.
Well done, Leonna. I could never have found that one…
March 12, 2024 at 20:01 #1685071It was quite crass to announce the death of Highland Hunter while the death wagon drove away in the background of the shot……….
