Hi droffats.
Sounds like we use similar criteria – the acid test being compared to viewing from the track, where I like to be at the winning line in an elevated position for the best possible view.
Moving cameras, aerial shots from blimps, moving cameras following the runners, zoom ins on one horse – they all do my head in and are ironically more expensive for ITV to deliver!
I will have ITV Racing on mute and plan to start off watching but, if the camerawork annoys me, will watch on the phone via Betfair Exchange and see if there are alternative more functional pictures from other broadcasters.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 16, 2021 at 09:42 #1529794It’s no excuse but I think much of the poor camerawork is due, ironically, to “innovations” in technology. The heavy static cameras of the past had to be positioned in the right place to obtain the best shots. Only drawback from the point of view of the viewer was that if something unexpected happened, it was sometimes missed. Modern lightweight cameras are cheaper and more versatile. Drawbacks are that they are unstable in high winds, the lack of an old-style hood means that when it rains, you can’t see anything at all and their flexibility encourages the sort of “artistic” production that we currently endure. Shots from behind the runners as they take a fence is my current bugbear. I can’t ever imagine why they’d think that might be of interest to anyone.
March 16, 2021 at 09:54 #1529799For all its directional faults ITV racing is still nowhere near as bad as the French coverage on Arc day …. I’m sure direction for that one is handed over to students from the local film academy, with a prize for the most irrelevant, arty angles.
I’m probably going to be controversial here but I actually quite like the overhead shots of the race because they invariably show the entire field and it’s easier to track movement of the horses in relation to the rest of the field but I appreciate it’s not to everyone’s taste.
On course I used to like to get to the highest possible vantage point in the stands to view the racing. That was a bonus of having a press badge, as the roof of the Queens Stand at Epsom, of the solitude of the Grandstand roof at Chepstow were perfect viewing points.
March 16, 2021 at 11:35 #1529822Thanks Ian, I will try and do the same and I am pleased I am no longer alone. I too like to be at the finish line in the highest point of the stands for the best view whenever possible.
Paulostermeyer the vantage point from the normal stands at Chepstow from the bottom bend to 3 out was non existent and I would have loved to have got on top of the grandstand there.
Still today will be the first time in over 20 years, bar of the course the foot and mouth, when I won’t be at Cheltenham.
Good luck to everyone today and let’s hope all the horses come back safe and sound.March 16, 2021 at 12:26 #1529837droflats – agree with you the view for normal punters at Chepstow is appalling, unfortunately too many courses have “blind spots”.
Have to admit it took me a while to discover the roof at Chepstow, it was one of the Raceform race readers who told me about it. Even when I was aware of it, it was easy to get lost trying to find it.
March 16, 2021 at 13:14 #1529857ITV reminding everyone that racing is a posh kids’ sport by having plum-voiced Cumani on Cheltenham. Inclusive.
I’m sure she’s ok for the big flat meetings (I don’t watch the flat) but there’s no gravitas there regarding jumps racing.
Like the new graphics of runners and riders.
March 16, 2021 at 13:24 #1529865Disappointed to see Cumani as main co-host; she knows her stuff on fashion and flat but I’d much rather have a proper jumping lass in her place. Especially as there should be nothing but the racing to talk about.
Are ITV still mainly using other suppliers camera streams?
March 16, 2021 at 13:45 #1529882Refreshing to hear AP droning on about Champ and his son again. Walsh is excellent mind.

March 16, 2021 at 13:46 #1529883Why is Piers Morgan a talking head on this section???
March 16, 2021 at 13:48 #1529885Got it on mute so I cannot hear what he is saying (possibly just as well), but I never thought I would see Piers Morgan on ITV Racing.
2020 Alleged Cheltenham Festival Of Death COVID-19 Super-Spreading feature, no doubt.
The only Alleged I am interested in is the 1977/78 dual Arc winner tbh!
Anyway, I too once had a press badge and remember being on the Grandstand roof at Taunton with no guard rail of any sort.
Being a wuss I was quite scared and decided to join the general public – for once! – instead!

March 16, 2021 at 13:51 #1529891I agree – it was a bit odd. Maybe another Elliott / Morgan feature is prepared and ready for when Foster has a winner.

March 16, 2021 at 13:53 #1529892I think it was ok to address it, not sure they should have filled pretty much the whole gap between supreme and arkle with self flagellation though. Should’ve got a virus expert on rather than the self proclaimed opinionated bigmouth of the nation who has no special knowledge just a confidence borne of arrogance.
March 16, 2021 at 14:21 #1529919Having defended ITV yesterday I have to say I was really disappointed with that piece on last year.
There was absolutely no need to rake this one up again, especially with the negative headlines of the last few weeks.
And get rid of the camera by the second last hurdle please.
March 16, 2021 at 14:25 #1529922I cannot recall Dickie Davies on World Of Sport intervening with an item on the OPEC oil crisis inbetween handing over from Brough Scott to John Oaksey during the ITV7 on any Saturday afternoon in the 1970s – maybe that’s my rose-tinted faulty memory at play again?

March 16, 2021 at 15:38 #1529976To be fair the camera work during the races has been nowhere near as annoying as I feared it would be – so far!
