The Derby get highest viewing figures for 5 years.
June 3, 2018 at 23:45 #1356080France Galop have put a jockey cam of today’s French Derby on their Twitter feed.
Tremendous footage of the entire race, and well worth a watch.
June 6, 2018 at 08:39 #1356227Excellent news, in the Post today, that ITV are showing Newcastle’s evening card on Friday 29th June, the day before the Northumberland Plate.
June 6, 2018 at 10:47 #1356235Thanks for that link, Paul. That’s the best jockeycam footage I’ve seen and by a long way.
June 19, 2018 at 17:23 #1357383Shocking commentary by Johnson in the Ascot Stakes in which he repeatedly called the winner as LA Goes To Vegas instead of Lagostovegas, along with his shouting commentary and need to Americanise his calls (they are stalls not gates) not surprising he didn’t get the lead commentator role for ITV.
June 19, 2018 at 19:22 #1357417I’ve never been a fan of Johnson as a commentator. He seems a nice enough fellow, but he doesn’t have the descriptive powers of a Hoiles, Holt or Machin. Just a lot of shouting and repeating. The other day at Sandown, a horse won a handicap by 6 lengths and he genuinely said “Pivoine first, the rest nowhere!”
June 20, 2018 at 10:47 #1357501I know its been mentioned before, but I still don’t know why ITV can show all races at Royal Ascot but not the Cheltenham Festival. I admit a bias that I find Royal Ascot a total bore.
June 20, 2018 at 12:52 #1357538Obviously to do with TV rights. ITV have stressed this on their Cheltenham coverage also stating they do not have the rights to cover the last two races each day. Whether a deal has been tried to be struck who knows

What got me yesterday was why they showed the first 2 races on the main channel and then switched to ITV4 (football at a guess but why not show all on ITV4). I recorded the programme and thought the first had not recorded but after watching the second part I noticed the first part hidden away somewhere else (with the Cheltenham/GN coverage from earlier in the year). Presume this was because of the different channels they were shown on.
June 20, 2018 at 15:10 #1357560However much ITV are paying Brian Gleeson it is way too much, all he does is make infantile gestures and voices while pointing to the bookies boards reading out one by one, the prices.
He has irritated me for several years now and is not disappointing me this time around.June 20, 2018 at 15:40 #1357566Not a fan of Mark Johnson either.
Most of it is ok, but when going through all the field “in second is … in third is … in fourth – fifth, sixth” etc. For ….’s sake if something is in fourth I know the next one you mention is fifth etc. Don’t need to be told every position! And he also bigs up the tention in a finish when it’s obvious who’s going to win. As if he learnt his trade as a betting shop commentator before they had TV.Or is he doing it deliberately?
“I’ve got a line tha’ll get on y’ nerves, get on y’ nerves, get on y’ nerves; I got a phrase that’ll get on y’ nerves, get get get on y’ nerves”.Value Is EverythingJune 20, 2018 at 15:49 #1357569Ginger,
Surely that is deliberate. That’s American style.
It is a must for American callers go through the whole field in this way. You must notice in Kentucky Derby’s calls, they spend the first minute to go through the field!
June 21, 2018 at 12:36 #1357715I have to admit, apart from the needless so called “comedy” double acts, the ITV coverage hasn’t been too bad this week.
The best part being the fashion coverage hasn’t has been as bad as in previous years from other broadcasters – although I realise I’m possibly tempting fate as today is ladies day.
June 21, 2018 at 15:05 #1357769Kevin Blake is wasted in that stupid social stable, he is the best pundit on the team with more knowledge than most on the actual analysis team. Kennedy can be done without
June 21, 2018 at 22:04 #1357853I’ve really enjoyed the coverage too, on the whole. Switched over to RUK once or twice, but ended up returning to ITV. Even though I prefer some individuals on RUK to those on ITV, they just don’t gel (for me) on their Flat coverage.
June 22, 2018 at 04:44 #1357897The Social Stable needs scrapping….Kennedy and Blake are unable to sufficiently fake interest in the juvenile drivel that they’re pretending to give a damn about.
Hard to be sure if the pair of them would be any good as presenters with proper subject matter to present but probably not.
Kevin Blake’s tips have been good this week amongst the SS dross and I’m becoming obsessed with his nervous intermittent, forced smile and the way his right arm swings back and forth whilst he’s on air whether he’s talking or not.
June 24, 2018 at 12:50 #1358430Best racing coverage in the world. Absolutely enjoyed their coverage in Royal Ascot. Keep up the good work ITV
June 24, 2018 at 13:04 #1358436Thought the coverage on ITV was excellent all week. Fun for the average joe yet knowledgable to the racing fan without being full on RUK.
Kennedy is good at the social stable and it seems to be working to get more people involved but agree Kevin Blake is being wasted alongside as he’s too good for that role. Guilty by association via the podcast I suppose but good he’s getting some pundit gigs now.
Weaver i really like, gives good reasoning for big priced hosses and sees the game like a punter wanting value etc. He’s invaluable IMO.
McCoy feature with AOB I really liked and they smashed it with the story pre and post race of Arthur Kitt.
All round, really enjoyable
