Sizing Europe machine….always new his best would come over fences purely because he has respect for them unlike his hurdles.
Some Present i heard won and that Taking Stock couldn’t jump for his life yesterday he is also one to follow.
Very promising young horses coming through
Great Stuff
October 15, 2009 at 21:40 #253504If they were serious about winning rather than having a nice school round Weapons Amnesty was ridden from too far off the pace.
Not too sure that today’s opening novice hurdle was quite as strong as some people were suggesting. I suspect if there had been another potential Cheltenham horse on view Russell would have succeeded in getting the favourite beaten. Why consistently sit five or six lengths further back than is necessary – on this occasion on a horse who wasn’t a natural jumper?
Sizing Europe was impressive but his profile is very fragile. Before I get too excited I would like to see what happens if he hits a fence and what he finds off the bridle.
October 15, 2009 at 23:04 #253517Weapons Amensty…..trained by Charles Byrne’s. Was never going to be ready especially over 4f too short for him and the Alfred Bartlett was weak enough race.

Agree with you Stilvi re Russell. What was he doing and more to the point why?October 18, 2009 at 00:20 #253979Catch Me going chasing tomorrow at Mallow. I thought that O’Grady might have kept him over the sticks with Osana now in the yard. He’d still be well capable of cleaning up in the 2m4+ hurdles this year so he must have schooled very well over the larger obstacles.
October 18, 2009 at 18:06 #254096Hopefully Gigginstown will take a long hard look at that opening novice hurdle at Cork and see what can be achieved if an inexperienced horse is given a no thrills very sensible ride.

Not a member of the Russell fan-club so Stilvi?
October 18, 2009 at 21:22 #254130Happy enough with Catch Me…good solid debut.
Both bumper winners look pretty handy aswell
October 19, 2009 at 03:55 #254197Catch Me did what he was entitled to do but I’d hope there’ll be four or five better novices in the country by the end of the season. He could be this season’s Tranquil Sea.
Tommy Cooper’s bumper winner at Naas looked quite useful. He should be competitive over hurdles.
Tom Mullins is beginning to make his mark at the top. He’s had plenty of nice young horses out over the last eighteen months or so. I think he’s a trainer going places. Given the right ammunition, he could offer some competition to the brother in a few years!
October 19, 2009 at 11:52 #254219Willie Mullins stabletour in the Post today. Interesting odds with VC on his number of Festival winners:
2-3 winners 11/8
1 winner or less 6/4
4 winners or more 11/4Personally think he’ll win the Champion Hurdle, RSA/Arkle Chase and the NH 4m Chase, after that it’s just a matter of finding something for the Bumper and hoping Quevega is back for the Mares race and we’re quids in
October 21, 2009 at 16:11 #254601Bob Lingo makes his novice chase debut tomoro along with Whatuthink in a very very good race for the time of year.
Cross appeal makes his highly anticapated debut over hurdlers in the 3yr maiden race.
Shindlers Hunt also makes his debut in the Hurdle
Bob Lingo is the exciting one for me
October 21, 2009 at 18:32 #254645Bob Lingo looked a serious machine when he won his maiden hurdle. I presume he had some sort of problem after he was turned over at Punchestown last year? Whatuthink is another potentially useful chaser in the making but surely he’ll need a lot further than 2m2.
Market should tell a lot with Cross Appeal. Willie McCreery’s horse is a decent enough stick so Cross Appeal should be beating him well if he’s potential Triumph horse.
October 21, 2009 at 19:05 #254654I think Schindlers Hunt is always going to ne one of those horses that gets overlooked throughout a season and causes a few surprises, hopefully at a decent price each time.
October 23, 2009 at 16:49 #254952Dunguib set to make his hurdling debut at Galway on Sunday. Can’t for the life of me understand why they’re going to Ballybrit with him. I think they’d be far better off waiting for Punchestown on Tuesday or Wednesday. He should win with his head in his chest regardless.
Rest of the weekend’s action looks fairly ordinary. Dessie Hughes looks to have found a nice little race to reintroduce Siegemaster at Wexford tomorrow.
Entries for Punchestown next week look very promising. Captain Cee Bee, Pandorama, Jered, China Rock and Venalmar all entered up in beginners chases. Shinrock Paddy is in a few of the maiden hurdles. Could be a fascinating novice hurdle on Wednesday if Some Present and Sweeps Hill take each other on.

I argued for O’Connell to keep the ride on Dunguib last season but not sure how long he will maintain the partnership this season. Huge amount of pressure and his career has not really progressed after Dunguib’s Punchestown ‘win’.
I think Checkpointcharlie is more interesting than Siegemaster although probably not for tomorrow. I put him up as a likely National horse last season and no surprise if that’s where he ends up.
October 23, 2009 at 20:43 #254986He’s very unexposed that Checkpointcharlie. That little bit of extra chasing experience that Siegemaster has though should see him home even allowing for the 4lbs he has to give the Swan horse. Hard to know how Dessie will campaign him this year. He wouldn’t be good enough in the Grade 1s against the likes of Notre Pere & Cooldine. Possibly might be using tomorrow as a prep for the Troytown/Hennessey?
I think O’Connell will do alright on Dunguib. He’s a capable horseman and has plenty of experience over obstacles – much more than Pat Mullins had on Cousin Vinny last year for instance. The horse also has a much better action than Cousin Vinny who always looks to move a bit akwardly to me. He should jump fine.
October 25, 2009 at 19:55 #255376Dunguib done what was expected off him. Bookies cutting him for Cheltenham on the back of beating a load of goats in a Galway maiden hurdle are taking the pish though.
Siegemaster won nicely down at Wexford yesterday. I’d like to see him aimed at the Hennessey but I think Dessie is going sending him to that chase for second season chasers up at Down Royal next.
Good to see Aranleigh return to the track with a win. Could possibly make up into a horse for the Cheltenham four miler/Irish National later on in the year.
