Time to ressurect this thread again with Punchestown starting up again tomorrow.
First Lieutenant, Voler La Vedette and Muirhead look the three class acts on the card.
October 13, 2010 at 20:20 #322256First Lieutenant – Workmanlike performance. Ground was probably lively enough for him. Will be a serious horse over fences in the future. Dessie Hughes’ horse in second is a sure-fire winner in waiting. They pulled 15 lengths clear of the third horse.
Voler La Vedette – Entitled to win the way she did. Settled nicely with the first time earplugs. Hard to see her beating Quevega over two andd a half or shaking up the boys over two miles.
Muirhead – Jumped well in the main. Had they gone a better gallop he’d have probably won a lot cosier. Still looks a bit ungenuine when the pressure comes on. Not one to have too much faith in.
Luska Lad, Loosen My Load, Sizing Europe are the class acts on show tomorrow. Meade’s in the bumper comes with a big pricetag and reputation – must be his first horse for Gigginstown?
October 14, 2010 at 16:10 #322380Luska Lad – How did he go off at 4/6? Won easily and will be tough to beat given his optimum conditions. Going on Shark’s post race quotes it appears that the plan to go chasing has been shelved for the time being. He’ll be very hard beaten in the Hattons Grace.
Loosen My Load – Workmanlike performance. Jumped well again and will be up there with the best Irish novices this season. Cheltenham November Meeting up next.
Sizing Europe – Debatable whether he did or didn’t get the trip. Ruby rode the perfect race and China Rock had the benefit of a race. He’s worth another shot at it again sometime in the future but he’ll probably be dropped back again now. Still doesn’t find a whole lot off the bridle.

Yes, I think you have to hope that First Lieutenant will be far more effective on softer ground. He isn’t the most fluent and at that trip on good ground it is pretty likely that he will be outspeeded if raised in class.
As I have said before Loosen My Load definitely looks the part but I suspect he doesn’t quite have the change of pace to be effective in the highest class.
When you talk about a horse staying the question really is whether the horse is as good at a longer trip as he is over shorter. Given that he goes well fresh Sizing Europe didn’t stay.
The bumper winner by the same sire as The Real Article looks another nice prospect for O’Grady. In hindsight the 7/1 looked a bit of an each-way steal.
October 30, 2010 at 13:16 #325437Very impressed with Shinrock Paddy at Naas. That was a very good performance giving lumps of weight to Son Amix. He will improve for that run and there’s now way he was right in the 3 mile novice last year.
He could clean up in the staying hurdles especially if Quevega is kept in cotton wool until Cheltenham again.
October 30, 2010 at 13:44 #325445Plenty to like about Captain Cee Bee’s reappearance.
Captain Cee Bee v Sizing Europe rematch Christmas at Leopardstown with Big Zeb thrown in for good measure?
October 30, 2010 at 13:48 #325446I’m frothing at the mouth!

Would I be forgiven for including Zaarito in the picture?!

It’s not going to be a bumper THM!

Surely Murphy will be keen to keep them apart anyway? If he doesn’t give Zaarito a few spins over timber, I think he might be tempted to send him over to England for a few runs. He’d get better ground and the fences don’t tend to be as stiff as those at Punchestown and Leopardstown.
October 30, 2010 at 14:02 #325451Some day he’ll put it all together IC!
Big Zeb had his doubters too!I’d love to see him run in one of the big handicap hurdles, but doubt it will happen

I think Paddy Power set up there "Faller Insurance" markets specifically for when he runs!!
October 30, 2010 at 14:09 #325456I think something like the Peterborough at Huntingdon would be right up his alley – 2m4 on decent ground at a sharpish track.
I doubt Big Zeb will go to Sandown again this year so I suppose he could run in the Tingle Creek. The thought of him at those railway fences though
October 30, 2010 at 14:21 #325462Some smart performances at Naas today.
Delighted that Captain Cee Bee proved me wrong big time. Hopefully he will develop into what every one things.
Very impressed with the gigginstown horse their….jumped superb and has a high reputation from his pointing days
October 30, 2010 at 14:28 #325463The Bull Hayes looks a sure fire maiden winner. I thought he’d be swamped turning in after being so keen but he ran on all the way to the line.
Dessie’s has been well backed in the bumper. I thought I’d get a nice e/w price about him – he was 8/1 on the irishracing.com tissue yesterday!
October 31, 2010 at 12:57 #325597Got quite excited about Whodoyouthink last season but he never really came close to living up to expectations and was again disappointing yesterday. Ridden with more restraint he travelled as well as anything but eventually faded away very tamely. Possibly worth one more chance over a shorter trip.
October 31, 2010 at 15:13 #325612keep an eye out for Silver Shuffle in the juveniles…has been schooling brilliantly.

Last time out the explanation given was either he wanted a longer trip or better ground so what was the explanation for the horse being backed from 14/1 to 8/1 and winning today? – surely the Stewards asked and must have referred it as it would have contradicted what was said last time. Or maybe they didn’t bother doing anything.
