I started taking this newspaper at the beginning of November and at 20p Monday – Friday is an absolute bargain.

As, they put it – "Britain’s concise quality paper"

I must say I am very impressed with the quality of content that is covered.

The only downside is that daily race cards are not printed but, they are now being considered for inclusion as they are "having a re-think".

    Anybody, else a fan?

Yes, Matron…..Extensive news coverage and intelligent comment and features. Not sure what the readership is and whether the cover price of 20p is sustainable but they deserve our support for making the effort.
Lack of racecards is no great loss….with Sporting Life online racecards and betting forecasts (which are, in the main, identical to the popular press) and various online sources for ratings, tips etc the need for printed information is less than it ever been IMHO.

    Good, to meet another reader!

Since the television advert sales, have increased for them and the newspaper really is a bargain at 20p.

You, are right I don’t know how long they can maintain the bargain.

Will have to give it a try. I sometimes by the

    Independent

but have never been that impressed by it – so wasn’t too optimistic about its new little brother; pehaps I’m being unfair. I’m more of a

    Telegraph

reader myself (surprise surprise), but have started buying the

    Times

    more often recently too. The

    Times

has improved a great deal over the last year, better layout, more journalists and contributors prepared to look at events from a different perspective and (unusual for British dailies), supplements that are actually interesting and don’t merit putting straight into the bin. (Anyone who likes science should buy the

    Times

on the first Thursday of the month for its

    Eureka

supplement. And, I’m finally getting the hang of their cryptic crossword. (The letters page though still falls short of the standard one gets in the

    Telegraph

    )
Does the new i have a decent crossword?

    Insomniac,

Answer, yes the paper has crosswords – but, not being a devotee I can’t tell you whether they are good or not.

I used to be a "Times" reader for many years but went off it in 2003.

The trouble with all the high end quality newspapers is having time to read cover to cover – especially, if they have various supplements as well. (I also object having to pay £1.00 per day now!)

You are certainly not going to get the depth of “The Telegraph, The Times or the leftie rag The Guardian” but, a concise view of UK and international events.

At, only 20p I think it is a little gem!

The three biggest criticisms of the "i" from readers are the lack of a daily cryptic (there is a wry six clue version offered as a sop to the readership), celebrity news (genuinely reviled), and the lack of any racecards. There have been surprisingly vociferous objections.

    There

    is

a single column on horse racing – which I have already surpassed in wordage this afternoon. It ends with tips and a best bet but in reality, coverage is virtually non-existent.

Like all modern newspapers, the "i" is obsessed with Premier League football and they have separate editorial and opinion on that hegemony, sorry, sport.

I stopped buying it because its brevity is simultaneously its main strength and its main weakness. Oh, and Julie Burchill writes a column which invariably angered me to the point of insanity.

It IS, however, light years ahead of the Metro. :D

Bought a copy this week – on your recommendation Matron – and agree, a jolly good paper and tremendous value for 20p.
Can’t stick the insufferable bore Steve Richards, their political pundit who uses 40 words when 2 would do, and agree with your comments re. racecards. Even so, apart from those 2 things, a good buy. I’ll certainly be buying it again from time to time.

Quoted, in the paper today:- "Starting Monday – a new concise racing service, etc."

I agree with Max – far, too much soccer coverage!

Although, they did cover the "Australian Open" well which, pleased me being a tennis fan as well as racing one.

Matron, just seen the "i" advert. They actually make a point of saying you won’t find celebrity gossip in the "i". I shall probably take it again if they put in some form of racing card.

I wrote to them with a compromise. I asked for them to assess the biggest field handicap of the day. Print the race itself, offer a hundred word precis and give an "i-Spy" tip of the day from that race. Apparently – and this is heartening for race fans – the public weren’t happy with the omission of horse racing. Hence the changes you mention.

Another fish slap for the doom mongers, huh! :D

    Max,

Today, they have given "Racing" nearly a full page.

"Turf Account" (Chris McGrath)has written an article about the Newbury incident.

    Below that, is "Pick of the day’s racing" which has 2 cards from Catterick (2:50 & 3:50), Plumpton (2:30 & 3:00) & Wolverhampton (4:10 & 4:40).

Hope you’re on commish Matron as I too bought this today as a result of reading this thread

I was expecting it to be a 12-page taster with heavily abridged articles from the regular Indy; an introductory loss leader with the sole intention of persuading folk to buy the ‘proper’ version.

But no, although loss maker it surely must be at 20p, it’s a jolly good standalone paper in its own right: 55 pages  , decent not-too-concise reportage and even some editorial which you may have thought would be left to its big brother. Stapled too!

And we racing fans surely can’t complain about having a whole page to ourselves

The Coogan ‘celeb’ and Twitter stuff on the front page does it a disservice; the content is actually significantly more substantial than that

I rarely buy newspapers or magazines of any type, but will certainly buy this from time to time.

The newsagent informed me it has proven popular, and who could be surprised. Imagine the other ‘upmarket’ rags are watching with interest

I am glad you enjoyed the paper Drone.

I like it because it is such a mixed bag – aiming at the younger and more mature reader. (I am afraid I am in the latter!)

Today’s front page was a bit "tabloid" I must admit; it is not normally like that. The supplement about "Twitter" was the first I have seen inside the paper since I started taking it.

I found the "Deborah Ross" feature quite amusing: I have never heard the expression "lady garden" before!

Simon Kelner – the editor – seems, to certainly take on-board readers ideas and has bowed to pressure with more coverage of "racing".

I’ve never had any difficulty finding copies of Racing Ahead, Macatina. Got one in front of me now. Not a bad paper.

The "I" today has loads of racing, but it’s disappointing that James Lawton, the chief sportswriter, and a good one too, instead of emulating Alistair Down’s brilliant and inspiring piece on the majesty of the Festival in the Racing Post, gives valuable and undeserved publicity to the nutters of Animal Aid.

*Sigh* The National media, huh. They give with one hand and take away with another.

I thought it was a fair article; It was mainly about Sir Peter O’Sullevan.

I hadn’t realized how generous he is by donating so much to charity.

Nice, to see "i" give coverage to Cheletenham – and with their full card printed.

Matron, on reflection, and after a re-read, you’re right. I was very harsh yesterday, largely because of an instinctive dislike of the Animal Aid nonsense peddlers.

The article was an excellent one after the first three paragraphs and it was good, in a nostalgic sense, to see a photograph of Attivo with a young (and proud) Peter O’Sullivan looking like Serge Gainsbourg in his polo neck and specs. :D
