If Scotland votes for Independence in September (which has tightened in the betting recently to a best-priced 7-2), what would happen to the racing scene?
Are we talking a whole new betting landscape, maybe a Government backed Scottish pari-mutuel system? Or will it be business-as-usual?
Presumably there would need to be a SHA to replace the BHA?
How do the courses stand?
What about race funding & the Levy etc?
Will Alex Salmond still hawk his godawful tips?
I’m sure there’s plenty of other questions too!

January 28, 2014 at 21:28 #466382I reckon it’ll be shorter than 7/2 come voting day.
January 28, 2014 at 21:30 #466383Do the Northern Irish courses fall under BHA auspices?

7/2 is a cracking price! I’d have thought it’d be closer to the 2/1 mark, definitely going to have a little punt on that.
And as Corm said, can always lay it on the day as it’s bound to get shorter.
January 28, 2014 at 22:21 #466390It will never happen

No they come under Horse Racing Ireland.
Scotland might stay with BHA as UK bookmakers fund levy with Scotland’s contribution added in.January 29, 2014 at 00:20 #466399the Czechs and the Slovaks each have their own racing authority.
as do the Serbs, the Croats and the Slovenes:

the five tracks in Scotland – Perth, Hamilton, Musselburgh, Kelso, Ayr – in 2012 drew attendance of 271,000
compared to:
894,000 The North
938,000 Yorkshire
969,000 Midlands and East Anglia
1,812,000 London and South East
572,000 The West
123,000 Walesso 4.8 per cent of total attendance was in Scotland.
4 per cent of the BHA’s 557 licensed trainers were based in Scotland.
figures sourced by searching this document for the word ‘Scotland’:

Is this some sort of sick joke?
July 2, 2014 at 07:41 #484483The betting for this has been fluctuating markedly since this post started in January.
By about March, there seemed to be some real momentum behind the ‘Yes’ campaign and they tightened to a general 2/7 — 5/2 state, with 9/4 in a place.
However, this has dissipated somewhat and best prices are now:
1/5 No — 9/2 Yes (Books)
1.17 No — 6.0 Yes (Betfair)The idea that the ‘Yes’ price is ‘
bound
to get shorter’ on the day is wrong. However it
may
do.
Political betting tends to ‘settle on a side’ as the result becomes ‘known’ close to the event and the ‘Yes’ campaign could easily be priced at 1-33 or 33-1 on the day.

Love it Mike we got you to change the topic of conversation less than a page into your own thread

Maybe best to just watch this election then and save the pennies for something like who will be the next james bond or will it rain on christmas day 2014?!
July 2, 2014 at 17:08 #484523I hope the Scots will eradicate non triers, if they do I will only bet in Scottish racing. Hand out a few lifetime bans, the crooks will soon get the message.
July 2, 2014 at 18:35 #484530When a Child learns to crawl we look at them willingly, when a child learns to walk,we look at them adoringly, when a child learns to ride a bike we tell them to get back on when they fall off.As Teenagers they develop a ‘they know best’ attitude,we let them learn from their mistakes. As adults if they haven’t learnt the simple fact that Scotland wouldn’t last 5 minutes without their Mother country then there’s no helping them.Even the educated Scotsman has the ‘Battle a Bannockburn’ coursing their veins and even they have an almost sado-masochistic yearning to get one over the English,You have to laugh!
July 2, 2014 at 20:23 #484533I highly doubt there will be a YES vote.
I am Scottish and firmly believe in the Union. There is enough "separation" already in the world and I don’t buy into the YES campaign bollocks. A "brochure" of theirs came through my letter box last week claiming I’d be £5000 better off if in an Independent Scotland. What a load of old unsubstantiated crap.
There is a world of difference between an opinion poll and an actual vote, particularly when so much is unknown about the future in this particular case. Many a chest thumping Braveheart will be champing at the bit to vote YES "For they’ll never take oor’ Freedom" but it’s likely his wife will be standing behind him saying "Jimmy, shut yer’ teeth and get oot’ and vote NAE"
When the time comes I think most people will vote for the Status Quo in the belief that you are better the Devil you know, than some cack spouting Tellytubby.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I am right at the top of the country Gord. Same county as Cormack, where you will be beguiled by the song that states "Be you a pauper, or be you a lord, you will always be welcome in Caithness"
If you decide to live here though, you will be labelled an "incomer or white settler" proving that the song’s sentiment is only good for a maximum two week stay

"Oh come all ye people, come over the Ord….."
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 4, 2014 at 15:22 #484670All talk …it will be same as before
