Whoar de ye bide Steve Caution?

I am right at the top of the country Gord. Same county as Cormack, where you will be beguiled by the song that states "Be you a pauper, or be you a lord, you will always be welcome in Caithness"

If you decide to live here though, you will be labelled an "incomer or white settler" proving that the song’s sentiment is only good for a maximum two week stay

"Oh come all ye people, come over the Ord….."

Bloody hell Steve, what do you do up there? Its bleak man!
Tell you something, if this ridiculous referendum gets the YES vote from the heathens that live alongside you Steve you wont be getting No more Proper foorball matches to watch or Racing from England. You will end up fighting amongst yourselves again!!

Aye Steve – but are you from the right, or the wrong, end of the county? Maybe Wick will get a referendum one day to separate from Thurso!

I went to Wick High David. The class of 74, same as yourself. I didn’t want to advertise that fact before because I didn’t want people to think we Dirty Weekers were forming a clique and wittering on about the good old school days where, Bone Shaker, Sharky, Biffo, Basher and Effeminate Robert helped hone our skills through a mixture of method and terror. Well, terror anyway.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Following what was generally regarded as a much better showing from Alex Salmond last night, a YES vote has been trimmed at Betfair from 7.2 to 6.8 with a concomitant move in a NO from 1.15 to 1.17.

I think you’re a little wide of the mark there Ricky, 80% of those entitled to vote intend to do just that, according to BBC.

The betting for this has been nothing if not undulating. With a latest poll showing YES within 6% of NO, Betfair now go 1.27 NO and a dramatically-cut 4.5 on YES.

    Should be interesting!

    Oh, I see.

I think proud Britons of a conservative leaning would be a little upset at the shrinking of Great Britain.

Personally, I long ago ceased to be a proud Briton. Our rulers do not make the heart swell with pride.

With a fortnight to go, this is the closest the polls have been for awhile and as a result the odds are worth taking for NO. Betfair went 1.33 last night. Really, this is a certainty. Lump-on!

Well, well Steve Caution – class of ’74 eh? What a year.

To that list of teachers could be added Bunny, who I heard has just died in the last day or two. Apt that’s she was an English teacher and is now mentioned in a thread where the word ‘concomitant’ rears its head.

Or how about Dr David Oliver (Biology), remember him? He confiscated my 1978 Grand National sweepstake (which I was punting round the O-grade Biology class, with some success I might add) and re-configured the dividend after spotting that I’d built in a reasonably sizeable and, in his view, unethical rake.

    Anyway – that’s enough cliquery.

I saw Bunny getting picked up by a taxi at the Coop not very long ago. Though I only ever knew her as Miss Sinclair, the driver referred to her as Jessie, which was news to me. She must have been a good age.

I didn’t take Biology after year two, based on the advice of a Guidance Teacher who was actually a Woodwork Teacher in his day job, so I have always doubted the wisdom of letting him shape my science intake.

I only had "Gonk" for Biology a few times and was more familiar with the other Mr Oliver who was the Deputy Rector.

I recall Bill Oliver sending me. at the tender age of 12. to the Coop for 20 Benson and Hedges, with the instruction that, if I was seen by any other teachers I should tell them I was on a "Mission Of National Importance" for Mr Oliver. Changed days now and I reckon he’d get the sack for trying that stunt in our litigious world. His wife was a Chemistry Teacher who was as mad as a box of frogs. I think he retired to the Borders and his beloved Rugby country and passed away a good few years back. He always struck me as a bit of a "Spiv" who would have applauded the initiative of your "bent" sweepstake.

Better close off here, I am getting teary eyed with nostalgia.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Mr Philbedge – strange surname think I’ve got it right – our form teacher in J4 of junior school (our last year of innocence) was fond of setting us ten-a-day arithmetic or some other excuse not to have to engage, whilst he put his feet up (literally) and enjoyed his true calling of chain smoking Player’s Plain Navy Cut

A nice guy we all had a soft spot for with the timeless, shapeless suit draped over endearing round shoulders supplemented by the most magnificent cough, tarred fingers, and a smelly, equally-coughing Ford Anglia which carted us after-school types hither and yon wherever our bright eyes focussed

    Bless you :)

Never talk politics, they say, although the school-time reminiscences have been enjoyable. Teachers, wherever they are – like punters – seem fashioned from the same off-cut of humanity.

My own Scottish schooldays, 275 miles south of Wick,(on the days I wasn’t "dogging" it – dogging (dodging) had a sweetly innocent meaning back then) were peppered with similar characters to those mentioned so far.

And…it’s a YES from me, by the way :)

I had the YES canvassers at my door the other day. They were too late, as I have a Postal Vote and have already sent it in. You would think they might have factored that in when timing their door-to-door campaign but never mind.

Anyway, I thought I’d get a wind up going and asked them about Horse Racing in an Independent Scotland. Needless to say they didn’t have a clue about the ramifications or why it mattered to me anyway.

I told them I would vote Yes if The First Minister promised to change his name to Sheikh MoSalmond and divert the Scottish Oil wealth to build a Racecourse and Complex near Scone that would make Meydan look like a shed in comparison.

I get the feeling they won’t rattle my letterbox again!

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Proper plunge this evening with YES down to 3.4 and NO out to 1.4 ahead of a rumoured favourable opinion poll in The Times (allegedly).

    We’re back where we started!

Aye SC, Mrs Oliver seemed a strange sort. No amusing anecdotes about her, apart from witnessing the late Ronald Robinson (Wright) climbing out of the window during her class after he told her he was ‘going home’and she’d stood barring the door.
