Space I’m not talking about a freak accident I’m talking about a fall that you get up from but results in broken bones of injury , again I wish no ill to come to Jack , let’s leave it at that
January 12, 2026 at 19:38 #1750276Saying that Jack Kennedy is one fall away from retirement suggests that you have more idea about his physiology than his competitors. Based on his injuries alone?
Walsh and McCoy broke lots of bones. Walsh even lost a spleen. They weren’t forced into retirement by a fall. I’m taking issue with your inference that Kennedy is more likely to be forced into retirement than his peers.
So we’ll leave it at that doctor!
January 12, 2026 at 20:06 #1750279Space he’s broken his leg 6 times , that would suggest his not as durable as many others , or don’t you think 6 times is excessive
January 12, 2026 at 21:35 #1750290Going back to Cobden which is the original theme of this thread!!
It is all about opinion and I think Cobden is a bit of a coward as a jockey and some would say that is a good thing but surely you want a jockey that is going to brave over the last couples of fences or hurdles at least. I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen Cobden chicken out at the last and put the horse in to the bottom of the fence and it loses momentum and costs him the race. Now I am not saying he isn’t a good horseman but what you need is a great horseman that sees the good stride and goes for that stride rather than one that takes the safe option. Championship races like those at Cheltenham, Aintree and the like are often decided by being on the right stride or getting a good leap at the last and from a purely personal point of view I wouldn’t let Harry Cobden near my horse for one of those races.
Also I am not a fan on junior either and can understand the need for a replacement for him as he seems to have not a lot of strength and his tactical nous is somewhat lacking too!!
Surely there has to be someone better than Cobden available?? And also relying on McCoy to pick a replacement is like picking Vinnie Jones to pick a cultured midfielder
January 12, 2026 at 21:39 #1750293The problem is once you get by Bowen and Cobden there isn’t anyone else to really choose from , either to old , not good enough of to young , Gordon looks likely to be the next good un
January 12, 2026 at 22:22 #1750300I’ve not been completely sold on Cobden but he’s done enough to suggest he is better than most. He seems to have a lot of self belief and the ability to get over what might be thought a poor ride or a disappointment. Clearly the loss of Kalif du Berlais did get to him but that would have been a gut wrencher for the whole team.
He could end up riding a lot of moderate horses in the job but plenty of opportunities on the big days which he’s been a bit short of lately.
January 14, 2026 at 15:35 #1750455Cobden is down to ride Jonbon at Ascot on Saturday with Nico being sent up North to ride Old Park Star in a Grade 2 and Akimos in a Class 4 Handicap for Hendo, who apart from Jonbon also has multiple other runners at Ascot on Saturday.
January 14, 2026 at 15:42 #1750457Harry Skelton, when interviewed on SSR, did not sound in the least bit pleased at the prospect of being jocked off The New Lion next season. I wonder if the Skeltons may try to negotiate an opt out?
January 14, 2026 at 15:57 #1750460Will he persuade Jonbon to refrain from his usual 2/3 serious jumping mistakes …
January 14, 2026 at 16:38 #1750472Wouldn’t be surprised if Paul Nicholls gives Freddie Ginger the top job. Seems to have been understudy for a while
January 14, 2026 at 16:39 #1750473Gingell not Ginger. Stupid autocorrect.
January 14, 2026 at 16:45 #1750474Gingell seems to be a good rider, I think he would be up to it.
January 14, 2026 at 17:08 #1750476Will be interesting to see who wins the battle to lead the race as Thistle Ask, Giidleigh Park and Jonbon all seem to prefer to lead and something will have to give…..maybe Jonbon’s jumping or Cobden backing out of it

Whoever wins the battle for the lead, the race is still likely going to be run to suit IET who likes to sit off the pace and come later in the race – any pace battle between the other three could end up with them cutting each other’s throats and falling right into IET’s lap 2 out or so.
Could be a right challenge of a ride for Cobden whatever way you look at it.
January 14, 2026 at 17:17 #1750480Maybe the day to try something new , let’s be honest regards as what he does IET will hammer him again
January 14, 2026 at 19:56 #1750499Best fencing jock in the weighing room is Charlie Deutsch.
January 15, 2026 at 07:02 #1750512Just read that Harry Cobden has rode 27 (i think but i cant find the article) G1 Winners for Paul Nicholls. I thought he must be getting close to Nico then. Nah. Nico has ridden 53 G1 Winners. There’s definitely a lack of respect for De Boinville’s achievements on the big days. Wonder if he keeps the ride on Impose Toi in the stayers. For what its worth, i thought he gave the horse two very good rides this season.
January 15, 2026 at 07:09 #1750513It was reported that Cobden’s contract starts in May, so presumably De Boinville will keep the ride in the Stayers.
The New Lion is the more interesting case. As I said earlier, Harry Skelton looked distinctly miffed at the prospect of losing the ride when asked about it yesterday and said the arrangements were something that need to be sorted out.
There is clearly a close bond between the Skelton brothers, so I can’t believe Dan Skelton is very happy either.
I wasn’t listening closely but I think something was said on RTV last night that McManus gave an assurance that Harry Skelton would keep the ride when he bought the horse. Which would explain Skelton’s demeanour yesterday.
