Can only imagine that Harry Skelton would be gutted. Ultimately its up to the owner though.
Equally you can only imagine how Cobden would feel if each of the trainers wanted their most prized horses to be ridden by their jockey. Wouldn’t even be a question mark for AP or Geraghty.
The New Lion will be the most interesting, of course, as the Skeltons go beyond the normal trainer/jockey relationship.
See how The New Lion does over the next few months. He might fall a few times and then Skelton will be looking for a flat jockey to ride him at Lingfield.
January 15, 2026 at 12:36 #1750533Harry Skelton agruably the most improved jock in the weighing room in the last couple os seasons.I doubt there’s a pound or so between him and Cobden. And I believe Darren Yates, who sold The New Lion got an agreement from JP that the Skeltons would carry on with him. I wonder if there was a definite deal on Harry?
January 15, 2026 at 23:07 #1750594Don’t forget that Harry won the Irish National as a conditional so the talent was always there.
January 30, 2026 at 17:09 #1752524Rides Anzadam on Sunday in Leopardstown and also has the ride on Kitzbuhel at Sandown. Looks as if he got some kind of agreement there too.
January 31, 2026 at 12:28 #1752653And now he lost the Scilly Isles ride to Townend who just arrived at Sandown.
January 31, 2026 at 13:12 #1752667Don’t see anything wrong with that: Townend is the stable jockey, and Kitzbuhel is not a McManus-owned horse.
January 31, 2026 at 14:49 #1752689No, of course not. But was it necessary to bring Townend over for one ride?
January 31, 2026 at 14:51 #1752691Does anyone think Cobden had a sligh smile to himself when Townsend fell ….

January 31, 2026 at 14:52 #1752692I doubt he’s as petty as some of the people on this forum.
