Great pick AP!
February 7, 2007 at 17:12 #27847Massively impressive, despite Alan Crowe going the scenic route and trying to hang on as long as he could. This must be clear jolly for Aintree now (I’m hoovering up anything over 16’s); the only question is whether the handicapper will see fit to clobber him based on a run over timber.
February 7, 2007 at 18:12 #27848
Thanks FSL – pity I don’t bet ante-post!
The only remaining issue I suppose is whether McCoy will prefer him to Clan Royal, and I find it hard to envisage the other AP opting for sentiment.

February 7, 2007 at 18:51 #27849Seems to be the trend for the genuine National contenders with the odd exception being sent over hurdles.
Navan could stage the 3m Grand National Trial Handicap Hurdle
February 7, 2007 at 19:38 #27850
Well I was wrong, there is another issue for Far From Trouble. JP’s racing manager, Frank Berry, is reported to have said that he’ll go for the William Hill Chase at Cheltenham and then the Irish National, as they feel he’s too young for Aintree this year. (He’s an 8-y-old).
Which begs the question, why the hell did you enter him then!!

February 7, 2007 at 20:32 #27851This is Frank berry you are talking about…… Racing manager to one of the biggest gambling owners in the industry. JP saw the price and was disgusted……. needed to do something to push it out:biggrin:
Seriously though, that does seem very strange. If they want to run him in it, surely this year will be the best year as far as handicap marks are concerned.
February 7, 2007 at 23:05 #27852According to the handicapper Phil Smith he is about to drop a bombshell next Tuesday when he annouces the weights.
He is about to disregard what horses like Hedgehunter, Numbersixvalverde, Montys Pass, Papillon and Bobbyjo what have all done in the past when racing over hurdles races to get a handicap mark for the National then winning chases after the weights were published and of course picking up no penalties.
He is about to announce the weights on what they have achieved in the past when racing just over fences.
Last years winner Nubersixvalverde has run twice this season (both in hurdle races) no doubt the plan would have been to run in a chase after the weights being announced.
This is something in the past AP has suggested needs looking at.
February 7, 2007 at 23:20 #27853I read that they were thinking of running him in the Irish National, rather than at Aintree, i.e. it wasn’t engraved in stone.
But I’m always suspicious of statements from the connections of a particular horse, as regards which race it will run in, out of a numbers of entries. Some stables, obviously, more than others, though that’s not an implied criticism.
Something like the "stable outsider" thing, I’m wary of. Though it may be more wishful thinking in these cases, as I make a judgement as to which race it would be best to aim at – particularly at Cheltenham.

February 8, 2007 at 06:52 #27854Must be the usual suspects, Clan Royal and Hedgehunter, I like Dun Doire if he could get a clear round.
