    I did well in that..

But seriously, the IRA stopped it with a phone call..the Pink shirts failed with the invasion.
If they used a few drones hovering around.. the race would not have taken place.

    Great planners..

    As for the Snooker tonight…GRRRR

All these fruit loop protesters seem to want is their 5 mins of fame on TV rather than trying to further the discussion of their reason for protest…..the fact that they seem to think that what they have done was a good thing for the cause is laughable as most see them as just extreme nutjobs out to cause the maximum amount of disruption/chaos to events instead.

I bet you not a one of those protesters on Saturday even thought about how their planned disruption would impact the wellbeing of all those horses milling around for far longer than they should have been…..so much for them looking out for the horse’s best interests.

As they all seem hell bent on super gluing themselves to all manner of things maybe the police once they have charged them all should then haved superglued them altogether and then sent them on their merry way.

They do not really care about horses, LD. They just don’t like racing and gambling and the people who do like it.

The sheer hypocrisy I have heard from some of the general public makes me want to vomit.

“Ban the Grand National, it’s cruel” they shout, just before they tuck into their dinner of battery farmed chicken kievs.

They’d then be sitting ducks to have a nice, large bottle of sump oil poured over their heads.

There was some discussion of first-time headgear earlier in the thread, with that in mind I thought this quote from an ATR interview was an interesting observation.

James Griffin, assistant to his father Patrick, who trains the 11-year-old [Roi Mage], said he felt the near 15-minute delay ahead of the race, caused by the protestors, affected several runners, including the Hill Sixteen, who suffered a fatal injury when falling at the first fence.

“There were a couple of horses that were a bit upset, but I said to our owners that we were blessed that our lad had no headgear or a tongue-tie on, because it is a hell of a long time to have blinkers or cheekpieces on horses,” said Griffin. “They are on to do a job. It is an education thing.

I realised there is something I don’t know – once headgear has been applied are trainers allowed to change their minds about using it? It feels like the answer would probably be no, but also that it’s probably rather unprecedented to have much time to think about doing so.

I heard that the same prostetors were planning to disrupt the coronation because horses are they involved. The security will hopefully be better than at Aintree.

The 2,000 Guineas on Coronation Day would appear to be an obvious target as well, especially if there is a royal runner.

There’s a petition going on Change.org to ban horse racing. The number of people who have supported it currently stands at 22,671.

I suppose to be fair only the adult population should be considered.

The electoral roll has something like 46,500,000 registered voters. That means the amount of people who have signed the petition is 0.05% of the population.

That is assuming every signature is unique, which I very much doubt. Petitions have been faked for years.

To be fair to the protestors, from what I can see the snooker authorities have never taken equine safety seriously at the Crucible.

I’ve never been there for the snooker, but I did for the theatre as a kid and those steps down to the seats are pretty steep!

It’s good for racing that they’re disrupting literally everything – it dilutes the strength of their argument they have legitimate concerns about equine safety and increases the impression they are simply a loose bunch of attention-seeking crank individuals.

I watched the race with my wife and kids, she’s not for or against horse racing, knows I love the sport and she respects that, she’s been with me to watch the racing live plenty of times and had a good time, enjoys looking at them in the parade ring etc and she did have a fun bet on the National with the kids which we do every year as I did as a kid with my old man. They all enjoyed the fun of the race, one of my kids had Corach Rambler so they were obviously excited. My wife was sad to hear that Hill Sixteen lost his life but she didn’t find the race uncomfortable viewing at the time or with the benefit of hindsight and she’d have been honest with me if she did and she’s never found it uncomfortable to watch live either. She’s obviously not what you’d call an anti but she’s certainly not an avid fan either. We discussed the race afterwards and to be fair we both agreed that the sheer number of runners is the issue with the carnage and I wouldn’t be at all against them reducing the field size to 30 and I do think it would help a lot, I think that’s closer to the max field for most of the other Nationals and they are still good competitive races.

If field size is to be reduced, then perhaps the National should follow the example of other major races and have a consolation race for those that don’t get into the main event. That would allow the big race to have even fewer than 30 runners if it was felt that would make a big difference.

The consolation race would have to be run on Friday – repairing the fences would be too big a job I think to have two Nationals on the same day. So either drop the Foxhunters or run it over the Mildmay course.

The Grand National – ROGOF – run one get one free.

Err, no, thank you – the Aintree Foxhunters’ over the National fences has been a cash cow for me for years, it’s fine as it is, thank you very much!

Some major handicaps have consolations, but a great many don’t.

There were horses rated as low as 128 running this year from out of the handicap – de rigueur back in the day but the general idea nowadays is to have obky horses of better quality facing the test.

Cutting the safety factor to 30 seems a day way to achieve that.

I think only 27 ran when handicap snip Rough Quest won back in the 90s – seemed a perfectly good spectacle to all of us who were on at 7/1!
