“Explain what the world looks like if we all ditched the horse racing or oil industries tomorrow. Sell the idea to me.”
Kevin Blake directly asked an Animal Rising spokesman what would happen to the 50,000 thoroughbreds in the UK if his organisation got their way and racing was banned immediately. He kept trying to dodge the question but Blake was insistent. He eventually stammered something incoherent about horse sanctuaries. It was pitiful. Blake then went on to explain that a ban on racing would create the greatest crisis in equine welfare since WW1.
As for the eco-zealots selling their idea: they have no interest in doing that because they know no one would buy it.
I am not sure why they are bothering because the government is committed to Net Zero by 2050 anyway. Obviously not quick enough for that crowd but it is the same destination, albeit slower.
I am not sure how much of the electorate know about the Net Zero commitment or if they do what it will entail to get there, even as soon as 2030. But when reality dawns on them, I predict there are going to be a lot of angry people when they realise the consequences for their way of life and their children’s future.
April 22, 2023 at 11:22 #1644921I think there are strong similarities between the eco zealots and religious cult members. Neither can be debated with in any real sense, and any questioning or challenge is seen as an attack and results in a further hardening of views.
From what I understand, the best strategy for extricating someone from a cult is to not challenge them at all and keep channels of communication open. Sometimes they will then eventually come to their senses in their own time. The problem is that by this stage immense and often irreversible harm has occurred.
April 22, 2023 at 11:28 #1644924If Just Stop Oil renamed themselves Just Stop Burning Oil I’d have a degree of sympathy with their cause
There’s so much more made from the petrochemicals refined from crude oil than petrol and diesel: witness the rather luridly coloured (aniline dyes) artificial-fibred clothing (nylon, terylene etc etc) high-viz tabards (plastics) and rubber-soled (isoprene, neoprene) footwear the protesters tend to wear, and the super glue they chuck about (cyanoacrylate)
Naiive, hypocrites ‘r’ they
April 22, 2023 at 11:48 #1644929Yes they would have to wear leather if there was no oil and biproducts.
Dozy people. I have a relation who is deeply involved with the Stop Oil campaign. I haven’t asked about what she thinks of stopping horseracing though, too anxious. She used to ride and I have been to Newmarket several times with her
I think there is a feeling of a cult with many of them.April 22, 2023 at 18:30 #1645039Extremists are always borderline cultists, whether it’s animal rights, eco, anti-vax, politics or religion. Impossible to reason with them. Annoying that they latch onto issues of genuine concern as it makes things more difficult for those trying to make rational arguments.
April 22, 2023 at 18:52 #1645043Apologies for the tabloid link but Barry Hearn is proposing to take civil action against the snooker protestor for costs incurred by fans. Any legal eagles here? Does that have any chance of success? I’m all for the idea, good luck to them if they go ahead with it.
April 22, 2023 at 19:11 #1645044Worth a try. Never been tried so who knows? Will depend on the strength of the case, quality of the representation and, ultimately, the judge. My uneducated guess (purely as a betting woman, rather than a legal expert!) is that the case will fail but the judge won’t award the plaintiff costs (so potentially huge financial loss).
April 22, 2023 at 19:29 #1645050Yes I think I’d have it odds on to fail. Hearn does have deep pockets so he can afford a good team and must think he’s got a chance. If was in the crowd I would certainly take him up on his kind offer. It would set a nice precedent.
I’m going 1/2 and 6/4. Just don’t tell Barry! He’ll clean me out on the 6/4.
April 22, 2023 at 19:45 #1645055I think precedent is the problem. It would open the door to claims by, for example, rail passengers for expenses beyond the price of their tickets (don’t get me wrong, I would welcome this and would probably do very well out of it, but it will never happen). If, as I predict, the judge doesn’t award costs to the plaintiff, that would set no precedent but send a massive signal to anyone considering similar actions.
April 23, 2023 at 20:22 #1645171Here’s a clip showing how uneducated, when one driver said that the “Just Stop Oil” was trying to stop cooking oil being delivered.
As for those Animal Rights people they just don’t want to stop racing, they want to stop people owning pets. Paul O’ Grady would be turning in his grave (so to speak). They also want people to go Vegan.
They were also out on Saturday for the Scottish National, obviously with lesser impact.
You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.April 24, 2023 at 16:24 #1645244What makes me laugh is they use mobile phones and internet, electric and have TVs. Now they aren’t vegans after all.
They started on dog shows someone said even a rabbit show cancelled. They have this thing against certain breeds of animals taking it to extremism and to far ie pugs, bulldogs etc they call all unhealthy, which is not the case. Same with there campaign I’ve seen on rabbits saying lop eared rabbits are unhealthy and what ban on breeding.
After this they will want ban on all pets as op says. Do they know what do estimated means our pets won’t survive dumped in forests or set free.
It also made me laugh how some had there own pets dogs at last week’s protest Aintree, I saw a westie on short leash, no food nor water and why would you put your pet dog through that atmosphere if against it
They are just attention seekersVF x

May 6, 2023 at 20:37 #1646909I assume the protest is about the ongoing failure to Blue Plaque the Kebab House in Printing Office Street where I once consumed four consecutive large donor kebabs the same lunchtime during an 80s St Leger meeting.
Surely a world record that still stands.
