Seems a strange comment to make that he’s not ready for it Ginge! All the evidence is pointing to trends for younger horses winning the race!
If he’s not going for the race this year I wouldn’t imagine we’ll see him too many more times now! Ayr would be the most likely port of call I would imagine!
January 9, 2025 at 22:30 #1717753I agree with you TC, appealed to me as one who could improve quite a bit at an extreme trip. Therefore the Grand National seemed a good race to aim for. I suppose he can ake the odd mistake and the trainer is hoping he’ll get better in that department in another year’s time. However, it didn’t stop the same owner running an even worse jumper last year – and it won. But maybe it is different for Cromwell because he doesn’t have as many good horses as Mullins. ie The horse is Cromwell’s best horse so losing him would hurt.

Beauport 33-1 free betJanuary 25, 2025 at 14:15 #1718856Iroko was very carefully minded today and caught the eye big time. He’s my first bet in the race. Not my typical type, but can’t argue with the eyes.
They seriously need to look at the outdated early weights malarkey. Maybe an English trainer taking advantage of it and winning will finally prompt the change.
January 28, 2025 at 12:28 #1719065I’ll definitely add Nick Rockett to my Minella Cocooner bet, while the following all catch the eye
Appreciate It – Trip an unknown, and even though he won a G2 last time, I thought he was handicap bound all year
Duffle Coat – I give him a good word every time he gets an entry, and they’re clearly mucking about with him. Wouldn’t want him winning on Sunday. I’ll definitely bet him Antepost
Fakir D’Oudairies – Of interest for everything this spring off current mark
Inothewayurthinkin – I didn’t buy a word of it when trainer said he wouldn’t be going. Even if he doesn’t get there, off his current mark he has some chance, and fully expected yo see him entered. Smashing horse
Mr Incredible – Rogue, but I’ll still bet him if he gets there and actually starts. Definitely placing too much faith in Sandy Thomson here
Roi Mage – Limitations exposed in this, but I’m likely to get a price, and even at his age, I’d give him an EW chance with max places on the day.
Three Card Brag – Getting brought along quietly, and an interesting horse
Old favourites Coko Beach, The Goffer, and Galvin, along with another regular Beauport could also attract sentimental support from me.
I’ll almost certainly add Nick Rockett, and I’ll 100% be adding Appreciate It, and Duffle Coat

January 28, 2025 at 14:35 #1719074A rough idea of the long handicap on current ratings. Estimated cutoff is around the 60 mark (144 rating). Weights are made official on the 11th of February. A quick look at the calendar doesn’t throw up many obvious opportunities for entries to bolster their chances of getting in with historic National trials such as the Eider, Racing Post Chase and Haydock/Punchestown Grand National Trials all taking place after the weights reveal. King Turgeon fans will be hoping for a monster performance off top weight in the Edinburgh National on Sunday.

08-07 – 90 Placenet 122January 28, 2025 at 16:43 #1719080Plenty to take in as per usual. I’ve only bet the one and three of my very early four fancies haven’t had entries, so I can look at this lot with a relatively clear head. My new looong-list includes…
Iroko – My sole bet so far. Not my usual National type, but Saturday was telling.
L’Homme Presse – Surprising entry and not likely to come here, but I’m a big fan and I’m convinced he’ll stay.
Bravemansgame – Was hoping he’d get an entry. Typical Nichols runner off a pretty mad mark.
Gentlemansgame – Had one eye on this since his Charlie Hall win 15 months ago.
Hewick – Classy, gutsy, stays and stays. Just a question of ground.
Pinkerton – Bit of a curveball, but is unexposed at marathon trips.
Royale Pagaille – Been waiting years for him to run in this. A year or two later than prefered, but can’t leave.
Shakem Up’arry – I don’t know why I’m being drawn to him for this, but I know the owner is keen.
Stay Away Fay – Gone off the boil a fair bit, but he reminds me of Vanillier.
The Real Whacker – Always figured this was the plan. That Kerry National run sticks in the mind, despite the unseat.
Vanillier – Looks like a Cromwell special currently 3lbs lower than when runner up two years ago.
Chemical Energy – Looks gone at the game, but I don’t trust his trainer one jot. Galway Plate run comes to mind.
Hitman – Nutty enough to just do it. Another one I wouldn’t typically touch in this, but the entry intrigues me.
Trelawne – Convinced he has something in hand, even if unproven at 3 miles plus.
Twig – Had one eye on this since his Cheltenham run last year. Ignoring everything since and is a pretty mad price.God knows who comes and goes from now until April. Of the above the ones I’m closest to committing to are Bravemansgame, Gentlemansgame and Pinkerton, however I’m happy enough to wait until the weights are official.
January 28, 2025 at 19:11 #1719086The best chaser in Nicholls yard hasn’t even been entered. Saying that he wasn’t entered for the Gold Cup either.
January 28, 2025 at 20:03 #1719088One of owner JP’s team, AP McCoy says “Iroko might not go for the National this year”.
You can therefore be certain he will. LOL
Value Is EverythingJanuary 29, 2025 at 08:28 #1719100Are they all qualified? (Maybe the French horse, Motu Fareone, isn’t?)
peter.h above mentioned King Turgeon in the Edinburgh National. How about Surrey Quest, also running on Sunday? A win there boosts him four pounds minimum, taking him to 143 of so?
I can see Mr Vango not getting in by one and uproar abounding as he’s kept out by Elliott’s ninth runner, or something…
And absolutely agree with the early weights nonsense. Go with official ratings and include all races up until the end of March.
