Bookies snipped him in to around 7-1 ….they don’t seem to frightened by that
January 25, 2020 at 15:18 #1480806Had bristol de mai not clattered the third last I think hed have won
Wasted energy catching back up and that cost him at the end
Santini looks a national horse to me
January 26, 2020 at 17:02 #1480927I wasn’t impressed. Early pace didn’t seem particularly quick and he’s still novicey at fences
Others have better formJanuary 26, 2020 at 21:53 #1480951I like how some are impressed with Al Boum Photo beating an out of form 10 year old rated 152 by 6 lengths…while others are unimpressed by Santini comfortably beating a multiple grade 1 winning chaser rated 170 with over 30 lengths back to three horses rated 164, 158 and 156 who all turned up off the back of career best efforts…all this while not jumping well…
Imagine if he puts in a good round of jumping in March!
As you might be able to tell…yes, I was impressed…think he’s a proper Gold Cup horse and he’s my first decent bet for this years festival…
Does need to jump a bit better but I think he can and that was a very good win yesterday in my eyes…
January 27, 2020 at 10:22 #1480985Al Boum was giving that horse 11 pounds though so you could say he beat him by 17L. 1 year ago he beat Inviation Only at the same meeting and according to Timeform this years performance was better on the clock.
January 27, 2020 at 11:42 #1480992While i don’t agree with Zamorston’s main point on Al Boum Photo, it is definitely worth saying that ABP wasn’t always smooth last year or as a novice. This is Santini’s 5th chase start of his racing career along with 1 point. He’s been off for a while again after a poor start to the season. He’ll stay no problem and has plenty of class. BDM is no push over and is a solid yardstick for one so inexperienced. Seems mad to think he’s only 9 races into a career. Clearly pretty fragile which would put me off backing him now.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!January 27, 2020 at 11:42 #1480993positives for Santini were that he battled once headed and the race wasnt as arduous as most recent renewals
January 27, 2020 at 12:01 #1480995everything other than the front 2 either got pulled up or was barely moving when they crossed the line so they cant have gone that slow
But they were handicappers and a novice I suppose
January 27, 2020 at 12:50 #1480999Often happens when the principals wind it up off a steady pace – the dour stayers can’t pick up. If they’d gone a good gallop I’d have expected at least one of those held up to be closer at the line.
The first mile looked fairly sedate so I’ll see of Mr Rowlands has clocked itJanuary 27, 2020 at 13:19 #1481003He has them about 10 lengths behind standard around the 6th to 9th fence.
Borderline Heavy at times, he says.January 27, 2020 at 15:05 #1481009The run for Santini Saturday was just a soup starter before the main course where he will be ready.
January 27, 2020 at 16:44 #1481013the race wasnt as arduous as most recent renewals
I got this impression too. The grade 1 horses got away from the others and got racing so Santini got a proper run but it didn’t look a beast of a race. A good Goldilocks prep really- not too hard and not too soft!
January 27, 2020 at 17:32 #1481017Santini will be better when they do go quicker, as he’ll stay all day. Better ground will help also and reading between the lines of Hendo and how tender Nico had ridden him until the last fence he was probably only 75%. If his dodgy feet don’t interrupt his prep he’s a proper Gold Cup horse.
Al Boum Photo jumped brilliant when he won this last year and jumped well at Tramore also but he was well known to put in a howler or two prior to that which could easily happen again.
Really looking forward to seeing the Irish GC on Sunday. Looks a race and a half and should hopefully tell us more than xmas did.
January 27, 2020 at 18:46 #1481030Santini ground that out v impressively vs a decent yardstick. I’d expect improvemnet, so a now a serious contender.
January 27, 2020 at 20:29 #1481046If your using BDM as a yardstick then I’d say lost in translation beating him at Haydock where he got his highest rating is a better performance than santini beating him at Cheltenham , I could see santini doing a Minella Rocco and running into a place late on …his jumping could also find , him out , it’s turning into a really fascinating race
January 27, 2020 at 21:18 #1481051The difference there though is Santini goes there off a career best and should come on again 2nd run after a wind op, whereas Lostintranslation has to put a major disappointment behind him!
I was sweet on Lostintranslation for so long but I’d be worried going straight to Cheltenham after that King George effort…I know they said it was his breathing but for me it was a jumping error that made him stop like he’d been shot.
At similar prices I’d much prefer to be in the Santini camp…
January 27, 2020 at 22:01 #1481057Santini ought to be second favourite behind Al Boum Photo. Kemboy has a bit to prove, Clan Des Obeaux is an obvious non-stayer and I am not convinced Lostintranslation is going to relish the distance either.
