The oh so progressive Glastonbury Festival. Headliners on the main Pyramid Stage:

    Arctic Monkeys
    Guns N Roses
    Elton John

    Very diverse.

Over to the Other Stage for you, Lana Del Rey. A bunch of has been, ageing rockers with misogynistic lyrics are more important and will make us more money.

I haven’t been to a live music event since I saw Killing Joke (then unknown Skunk Anansie supporting) at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire on their Pandemonium tour in the mid 1990s.

Since then I have completely – and I mean completely – lost touch.

Once into alternative music, I’ve not so much morphed into my father as into my grandfather.

So the fact I’ve heard of all of the above is as severe an indictment as I can think of.

You’ve gone “back to square one”, then Ian.

    Another empire backfire.

Glastonbury is certainly not what it used to be.

The whole thing is middle aged. It is not edgy or rebellious, even if it likes to think it is. I am not sure it ever was.

The tickets are so expensive now that only well off people can attend. It has just become another part of the English summer. About as alternative as Wimbledon and Glyndebourne.

“The tickets are so expensive now that only well off people can attend.”

This occurred to me – plus sadly I think many of my generation are selfish, things like Glastonbury are meant to be for the young, but too many of my fellow baby boomers think everything should be about them.

    Forever.

I was also into “alternative music”.
For me it was all about the music and it sounds completely different live, so I couldn’t see the point of going to see any concert…

Or, maybe that was an excuse because of my social anxiety.

Rick Astley today – edgy or what

This article sums it up pretty well:

When did Glastonbury become so boring?

Actually, I agree – in my experience live music was a chance for the band to give a usually poor, improvised, delivery of what they recorded impeccably in the studio, while in many cases self-indulgently showboating to the audience.

Social anxiety is often underrated – it can facilitate all manner of shrewd decisions.

    Love these threads every year!

Looking forward to Guns N Roses later, will be lovely to take my mind off the catastrophic implosion that was was my bank account during Ascot.

To be fair, in this instance I don’t mind it. I could be wrong here, but I feel like, with there still being so many old-school Glastonbury lovers in attendance every year then the old-fashioned social norms (i.e actually enjoying the show/music and living in the moment, rather than being glued to your phone and ruining the atmosphere for singer and crowd) are kept in place. I can imagine that if it was overrun with the youth of today then it wouldn’t be quite so special, you need the old-timers there to maintain standards!

Obviously it’s all about the money but it sells out long before anyone knows who’s playing. There’s at least some diversity if you look down the bill and away from the main stages.

More to the point I think is where is Just Stop Oil et al? All these acts flying in from all over the world carrying heavy equipment, 200,000 plus people travelling in from all over the place. I doubt any event held in this country all year has a bigger carbon footprint. Seems like an ideal target for their protests, no? Or are Tarquin and Tallulah too busy off their faces on magic mushrooms in a Somerset field to notice 🤔

On this one I’m quite happy to watch from the sofa safe in the knowledge that I’m three ton up on the weekend by not buying a ticket (© I. Davies). Set up a tent in the garden and don’t shower or flush your toilet all weekend if you want to enhance the experience.

Do I even have to say how much I love this?

Probably not, but I’ve said it anyway.

I don’t really mind the likes of Rick Astley appearing at Glastonbury. A festival can cater for all tastes. But I do think the headline acts this year are unimaginative.

It is the way this festival more than any other talks up its “progressive” credentials which irritates a bit, especially when on things like diversity and Green issues it is an epic fail.

Glastonbury happened once anything else should never have happened. It was a one off event, it captured a moment anything that happens now is for the sake of Glastonbury badge brigade.

The more I know the less I understand.
