Vindication for Hein Hollow as Windstoss wins the (weak) Gr.1 in Cologne. As much as Adrie de Vries is one of the most underrated jockeys in the world, Eddy Pedroza must be one of the most overrated. Can´t believe he´s still #1 jockey at Wohler´s big stable. No idea why Markus Klug would go out of his way to book him for Colomano, unless we wanted to make sure Windstoss wins.
September 16, 2019 at 09:42 #1455145To Jac’s special request, I’d like to bring this up again
Currently there are lots of exciting British starters in Germany, as Ghaiyyath bolted up at Baden Baden, and yesterday Ispolini won our St. Leger at Dortmund. Johnston is also aiming at our tracks more and more..When there is more to come I will try to post them here and would be glad about some feedback
September 16, 2019 at 11:20 #1455176I see Thore Hammer Hansen has more than doubled his rides and wins/prize money won from the previous year
He’ll be learning loads at Hannons yard.
Tom Marquand has had a brilliant last two years and was 3rd in the jockeys table the last time I looked, would be great if Thore was able to follow in his footsteps. What is the coverage of German racing like in Germany, Hein. Do the televise all the big races/weekend meetings??
Blackbeard to conquer the World
September 16, 2019 at 12:40 #1455344Yes Nathan, Thore develops very well and he is very fortunate to have gotten this chance from your friend Hannon I would be glad if your anticipation came true
Oh, the coverage of our races in German TV is more than poor, even from the Big 3 there were no live images at all, only small reports afterwards in the “Sportschau”. Racing has almost no lobby here anymore, the numbers of races decrease, and the tracks struggle more and more to find sponsors for the races. Compared to Britain, we are quite close to a “Banana Republic” of racing
September 16, 2019 at 13:00 #1455346I had a look at Thore one day when he was riding for Alan King (I think) his riding stats are very decent! Didn’t realise he was German, i assumed he was Norwegian for some reason!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!September 16, 2019 at 13:52 #1455349Thanks for retrieving this Thread Hein, it will give us somewhere to discuss our hopes and dreams up to the end of the flat season and possibly onto the All Weather as Chelmsford seems to be building up it’s profile to attract the big money and players I might even pop down there it’s only 20 minutes drive from where I live but I much prefer Newmarket with more atmosphere.
Do you have All Weather tracks in Germany Hein and what is the racing like, is there a jumps season as here or will you go into hibernation after November like Joni and come back for Meydan Festival which we all enjoy.
I will try to pop in regularly with feedback and horses that I have seen at Newmarket that I like. There is a two year old only day on Wednesday 23rd October it is a chance to cast your eye over lots of new and exciting colts and fillies as a lot of them take their first steps onto a racecourse. Last year at the final meeting I chose a beautiful filly to follow called Feliciana De Vega who was built like a colt and won her maiden in fine style, but sadly she had some setbacks this year which have delayed her comeback, still looking out for her next run which is down to be this Friday 20th Sept. at Newbury in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes (Listed) she’s already dodged two races that she was listed to run so not holding my breath but if she runs and she’s fully recovered she will give a good account of herself..
Look forward to hearing more about the German races and how our horses fair and any good touches you may have pulled off..best of luck with the Thread Hein. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 16, 2019 at 14:43 #1455361Thore is of Danish origin Jack, but he was based in Germany, as his father Lennart is a smaller trainer and a former Jockey here.
Sure Jac, then we don’t have to spoil the other threads during the AW season
Yes, from your AW tracks Chelmsford is at least my fav for betting, and my least wanted is Kempton.German AW is very sad , we only have Dortmund and Neuss and those low grade races take place only once a week on sand, because they can’t afford more decent surfaces
German jumping is already dead, you probably wouldn’t believe it, but we only have less than a dozen races left in the whole year, but I’m not missing them..Yes, Meydan really brings us some good opportunities and also it shortens the time to the new flat
Thank you in advance for your contributions, if I spot some “good things”, I will bring them up too
September 17, 2019 at 00:19 #1455960Really surprised to hear of the poor quality of jump racing in Germany Hein and the AW. Have you ever been over for any racing in the UK?
I would certainly love to visit Baden Baden but the closest I got to winning a luxury weekend there was writing my phone number on the back of a losing betting ticket at Newmarket on German Racing Day and putting it in a horse bucket passed round by Derek Thompson..
sadly it wasn’t drawn out by the organisersThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 17, 2019 at 10:29 #1455975My only visit was to Leopardstown in 1997, which was a great experience.
I played the only horse I knew from back home, it was the great Pilsudski, I played him for a 100 quid and he doubled my moneyYes, Baden Baden is very pleasant to visit and I would say it is our best and healthiest track together with Düsseldorf. Only thing is that they put their emphasis on “glamour” and I like it more down to earth, which I certainly get at my home track Dortmund
September 17, 2019 at 19:30 #1457360Baden Baden sounds lovely Hein very similar to our Royal Ascot, and I love to dress up for an evening out, but find at racecourses it’s very restrictive unless you are going to plant yourself at the bar sipping Prosecco watching all the action on In House TV….Like you I want to be amongst the action and see where my hardearned cash is going.
I too have visited Leopardstown once some time ago and backed one winner ridden by Mick Kinane and I can’t remember the horses’ name I did find the bookies there are very closed shop and it was difficult to get a decent price out of them..don’t know if that has changed much.
I’ll come back later later with a few thoughts about Newmarket on Saturday. I did open a Thread on the Cesarewitch Trial on Saturday which looks very interesting but only has a a small field of 12 which could get smaller..best of luck Jac

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 18, 2019 at 07:26 #1457790Back to racing away from home and how unlucky was Mark Johnston’s filly Walk In Marrakesh not to hold on from Abscond in the Natalma Stakes in Canada yesterday. What an exciting finish…see it here
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 18, 2019 at 14:44 #1457822Thanks Jac, my thread is getting really international know, but that’s fine with me
On Sunday there are probably some British starters in the G1 at Cologne, but I wait to post them till the final decs com on Thursday.
September 18, 2019 at 22:12 #1458238The riders are already declared, so here we go:
It’s a G1 at Cologne over 12f, our main contenders are Donjah and Derby winner Laccario who were slashed by Ghaiyyath last time, but who would blame them ?
From GB come Best Solution (P. Cosgrave) whose current form is not too striking, but last year he won the G1 at Baden Baden; and also Aspetar (J. Watson) whose form doesn’t read too scary to me, but knowing the horse would be better, and I don’t
Any thoughts on this race?September 19, 2019 at 00:06 #1458525I quite like the chances of Roger Charlton’s Aspetar in that race Hein
He’s by Al Kazeem who won The Prince Of Wales at Royal Ascot and the Tatts Gold Cup. He has won at Gp.2 Level at Chantilly ridden by James Doyle in a a fast time and last time out ran 4th behind Coronet at St Cloud just neck behind Lah Ti Dar (3rd).
He won’t want anything firmer than Good ground and it’s a step up in class for him.Best Solution was unlucky in running on his only start this season he was 7th but only 2 and three quarter lengths behind the winner Royal Line. I think he deserves another chance.
You know your German horses better than I Hein so how do you rate Laccario and Donjah’s chances? The former must be very highly rated. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 19, 2019 at 12:03 #1458978Yes Jac, Laccario should be the best German horse, but our Derby turned out quite weak, and Eddie Pedroza up is not the most reliable type.
From the British starters I don’t like Best Solution simply for his trainer, I really see SBS as a criminal and wouldn’t play his horses. Sorry, but this hasn’t changed..
Communique is declared also with Buick up, but his Baden form was so terrible.
I must say Aspetar seems interesting, I went through his forms again and the one to Marmelo shows some serious stamina, which he will need here. Ground should be okay for him, good with some rest of juice. I can’t remember Charlton sending one over, and I really like Jason Watson riding.
So this race is a tricky one, I will watch them in the paddock (only on stream) and consider Aspetar for playing place only, which is possible here. Would you think he brings my 50 € in the frame?September 20, 2019 at 02:13 #1459027Interesting the fact Laccario and Donjah were flat out against Ghaiyyath it might be worth going for the Roger Charlton horse Aspetar to get in the frame He is a shrewd trainer and I like his sire Al Kazeem and also Jason Watson…so good luck and I think I will join you.
Communique is an interesting runner with Buick up, can never rule Johnston out of these races but he is very much like me and loves Newmarket, he has never been beaten on all his runs there.
Agree with you and your thoughts on SBS but Best Solution is a talented horse and will improve on that awful last run but staying with the Charlton horse Aspetar best of luck on Sunday. Jac
