Although it can be tough getting prices early in France I’ll give it a go this season.

Today’s pick is in the 1.20 Chantilly and is Chailloue from the Jean-Claude Rouget stable. I have had some success with this stable’s progeny of Le Havre and this colt won his maiden by a neck late last season. I expect plenty improvement and at 9/4 he was the bet today.

    1.20 Chantilly Chailloue 9/4

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Beaten by a short head. Hopefully not an omen for the season.

Thanks guys. I was slightly disappointed with Chailloue because I had read that he had Classic entries on a French website. He didn’t look anything like that standard at Chantilly.

He didn’t settle very well and then took an age to pick up. The winner was well supported and it just didn’t look like Chailloue would catch her but it was tight in the end.

Rouget has had three or four run this spring and they have all run to pretty much the same as they did on their first start last season. That’s not a great sight but they were horses who made debuts late in the season. I’d just be a bit wary of the stable for now. I felt that Chailloue would have won the race cosily if he had made, say 10 lbs improvement on his second start, and I don’t think that was an outrageous ask 4 months on from debut. The connections felt he was very green first time up.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I’ll be keeping up with this intently. French racing seems like it holds plenty of value with UK bookies.

Cheers Lads. The season should get going properly in France in a few weeks.

I noticed that Alba Power, who used to be with Hugo Palmer, is in the Chappet stable in France now, and he won a race at Chantilly last week by six lengths. He was previously beaten more than seven lengths by Wootton, who dotted up in the Listed Prix Isonomy last October.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

    Good luck Steve

    viva the French et al

I’ve not had a lot of luck over the years with the French lot, Dabirsim, Beauty Parlour and many more whose(s) names escape me.

    Doesn’t stop me trying though.

Nice to see you having another go on DLAP, Steve.

Look forward to seeing more about what the French have to offer, especially after such a disasterous 2017.

I fancied the French horse Hunaina at Kempton rather strongly yesterday. I napped her over on the Bob Rolf thread and backed her the previous evening at 5/1 because I thought the Stoute filly was out of form throughout last season.

According to the ratings Smart Call was miles ahead but I felt Hunaina was the one going forward and with fitness assured she seemed value at 5/1. She ended up winning it cosily but I wasn’t sure I could put her in this thread, so left her out.

At Longchamp or ParisLongchamp as it is now known, I felt Study Of Man was the bet in the Prix La Force today. I wrote him up on the forum last year after an impressive debut win. Pascal Bary’s son of Deep Impact is entered in the Epsom Derby and he looked good in coming away to win a couple of lengths om his first start. Runner Up Near Gold went on to win his next race by 3 lengths and the two of them pulled 5 lengths of the 3rd on their debut.

I did OK with Pascal Bary’s Senga last season after a couple of disappointing runs and the French horses have lagged a bit behind ours of late.

I feel Study Of Man should be capable of group wins this season and I hope he will land the Prix La Force. Maybe he won’t win at Epsom but he seems a capable colt and reasonable improvement makes him tough to beat here.

9/4 was the bet here for me.

2.45 ParisLongchamp Study Of Man 9/4

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Any views on WALDGEIST today while he wants 1m4 the heavy ground today make it a 1m4 race even though today race be at 1m2 not win last year but should win today.

    Good luck to this thread

Second again as Chilean does the business for Britain. The ground was heavy and that’s always a tough ask on the first race of the season.

Chilean had won on heavy at Haydock last season and clearly there was no concern for him in the conditions today.

I didn’t actually see the race because the video player on Ze Turf went tits up when I logged onto the site.

Chilean was previously sixth to Saxon Warrior in the Racing Post Trophy, beaten 6 lengths, so that’s encouraging for the Guineas and Derby favourite.

I was disappointed with Waldgeist last season Darren and I could only watch him today first time up in heavy ground. He needs to bounce back this year but he may well be capable. He and Akihiro were major let downs last season though.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Only 5th for Waldgeist as Air Pilot wins for Ralph Beckett.

In the fillies race Group 3 Prix Vanteaux I was against the Fabre filly Toujours because I felt she was rotten value at 2/1. Her 87 rating for her sole win was two stones behind some of the runners and with heavy ground to face against fillies who had had a run already this season, it looked like a bad bet at such short odds.

I didn’t play on the race but it was the 10/1 early priced Barkaa who won cosily by 4 lengths from Boussac runner(6th place) Soustraction. Toujours was beaten more than 9 lengths in 5th place today.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

French 2000 Guineas is on Sunday 13th May this year.

Having backed Wootton for the Newmarket Guineas I am concerned that he seems to be going Prix Fontainebleu for his warm up, a spacing that suggests he may stay at home.

Wootton looked the best colt for a mile in France last season and at 13/2 I reckon he is value for the French 2000 Guineas. A comeback win sees him go 3/1 or less in my mind.

French Guineas WOOTTON 13/2 Paddy Power.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Some interesting racing today Stevie but I’d be wary of the form in those conditions. The Fabre horses all looked in need of the run and I certainly wouldn’t give up on Study of Man who I thought was given a pretty tender ride in behind a horse with proven form who loved the ground. Funny to see the French horses coming here and mopping up only for ours to do the same to them today wasn’t it?!!!

I got caught up with the Prix La Force Joni. Here is the race for those who didn’t see it:-

    http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/race-replays/2/3130/

I was a bit disappointed that Study Of Man had so much to do. He was staying on but so often we see the horses who are better positioned in bad ground grabbing the initiative and the finishers not being able to catch them.

I thought it was a good effort from Study Of Man and he’ll win group races this year with normal improvement.

The fillies race was won in impressive fashion by Siyouni’s Barkaa.

    http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/race-replays/2/3132/

The winner seemed to cope well on the ground, managing a good, fast, cadence in the conditions. Runner-up Soustraction came out of the stalls awkwardly and was behind from the get go, she coped better than most and stayed on well to take second spot. Freddy Head’s new inmate Rock My Love brought decent form from Germany and had won in the conditions before. She was popular in the betting but weakened very tamely today. Toujours will probably perform better on decent ground. She looks to have physical scope and is probably a good bit better than she could show today.

Barkaa won with enough in hand today but I would be wary of her away from soft going.

Stats so far:- 3 bets, 2 seconds, one still to run -3pts

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
