The reason this is on the Horse racing thread is because the England football team are about as useful as a selling plater in a Group race.Joe Hart is Sh*t,he is away with the fairies,Pirlo puts the ball one way,he goes the other,Rooney just cant handle a bit of heat,he has a body mass index that ensures he’ll never be a ballet dancer and some of his turns last night confirmed that.As for Captain Steve Gerrard…………He never turned up,there was a No4 on the pitch but he looked like Ricky Gervais,he took Free Kicks like him too.
Ok So we beat Uruguay…..Yeh right, thats easier said than done and guess what we get put out by a bunch of Coffee Grinders! I can see the Headlines now……’England Costa Fortune Out of World Cup’!! Not that most of us really thought we’d actually win a game, never mind that big Gold Cup.Thats why this thread is on here,it has several connections to Horses,Donkeys,Glory,Betting and mostly…Losing! ‘England are Sh*t’!!
June 15, 2014 at 09:34 #482447With the young team we had I thought we’d run them ragged in the second half but the Italians seemed to have so much time on the ball. I’d put more but the computers about as useful as Rooney this morning
June 15, 2014 at 09:38 #482449Homer,we had 3 Good players on the pitch last night,Sturridge,Wellbeck and Sterling, those lads ran their hearts out but Gerrard who should have lead by example was as useful as lead around a Lifeguards Jock strap!
June 15, 2014 at 09:52 #482453I though it was England’s best performance at a tournament for ages………
We lost to a better team but at least we played with some gumption
the future looks a bit brighter after a few years of gloom

I would agree with that although it hasn’t got much to beat from recent years.
I enjoyed the game. I thought England showed plenty of attacking intent (something woefully missing under the £6m-a-year Capello) and I thought they lost to a calmer, more experienced side. No disgrace there.
Whatever happens, as long as they give it a right good dig – they had 17 attempts on goal last night – I’ll be happy. If they get beaten by better teams so be it. Having seen Uruguay and Costa Rica yesterday, I would strongly fancy England to beat both.
On Radio Five this morning, one fan rang in to say that Hodgson must be replaced ‘immediately’ (not sure how that works), preferably by either Tony Pulis or Harry Redknapp. At least we can all agree that some England fans are just demented.

The trouble with English mentality is its always alright to lose,it may well have been Englands best performance at a tournament for ages ‘Slowly’ but they Lost. They lost to a team not that much better than themselves but a team who played like one.We had players on the pitch last night who were half hearted and that typifies the hypocritical old adage of ‘Bulldog spirit’.There isn’t one.The future would look brighter still if the ‘old boys’ put as much effort into the game as the young blood. We had half a team wanting to win last night, the Italians had a whole team trying, thats the difference.Gerrard walked around last night.Poor show that.
June 15, 2014 at 10:42 #482466I was feeling a bit rough with a heavy cold and I tend to be a ‘dip in and out’ with football these days, so didn’t stay up for the live broadcast, but judging by the highlights I’ve just seen England played well but were just edged out by a slightly better side. Plenty of efforts on goal which is good, though defending could perhaps have been better on the goals and Joe Hart looked a bit lost on occasions.
Generally a pretty decent effort form a side that has some promising players coming through at the right end of the age scale. Why on earth anyone would want to get rid of the manager I haven’t a clue, but there are some numpties out there with the disadvantage of having a gob bigger than their brain.
Next match should be OK for England if Uruguay are as dire as they were against Costa Rica, though can they be that bad again? Some things never change, as Pereira’s assault on a Costa Rican in the closing stages showed. There always seems to be a thuggish undercurrent where Uruguay are involved.
What a refreshing tournament this has been so far. Normally we would be lamenting the turgid cautious cr*p that is the norm for the early stages of a tournament. No such thing this time with Holland’s breathtaking demolition of the Spanish taking centre stage.

Mike, you’ll be happy if England fail to get out the bloody group? Again this mentality of ‘Its not about winning, its about taking part’ gets my goat. Its not alright to pay stupid sums of money to footballers who cant win matches but we do it.If Costa Rica are the team to put England out then at least that will highlight all thats wrong with football in this country. From a betting medium England are akin to John Gosdens ‘Fencing’,we know there’s talent in there but he just cant be bothered to go through with his effort. Those that took 2/1 England last night again typify the mentality of the mug punter, enduring 90 mins of hell for a paltry return that was always going to be in doubt.I hope England do beat Uruguay and Costa Rica but then what? Proper teams next, teams that a nation of ours should be able to face but cant.I’m afraid England should have stayed in Florida and rode Summit Plummet with Mickey Mouse and friends as the result would be much the same…..A rapid decent downhill and a wet Ar*e.
June 15, 2014 at 10:53 #482471Gerrard’s a myth,a good footballer that had a spectacular game to help his side when the champions league but other than that he’s never been a world class player, always good don’t get me wrong but the best years of his footballing life were when Alonso ran the show and Gerrard somehow got the plaudits because he’d score the odd cracker.
Again this year he was decent,i watched a lot of Liverpool and he was their 4th or 5th best player yet because he scored a few penalties he got nominated for Player of the season and quite laughably finished in front of Yaya Toure
I was keeping an eye on twitter the other day in the build up to the game, lads saying only Pirlo would get in the England side. Talk about living in a bubble. Not 1 English player is world class at the minute, Rooney was but isn’t any more and young Barkley COULD be in a few years but he’s being blown out of all proportion at the minute, makes the wrong decision far too often but is a very exciting prospect.
P.S Glen Johnson should retire, regressed a lot the past 2 seasons

Ah yes, who can forget Jose Batista’s magnificent 56-second sending off for flattening Gordon Strachan in 1986?
And that was in the days when it was difficult to get a red card. And Scotland used to play in World Cups.
Mike
June 15, 2014 at 11:02 #482473Yes, Mike. As an Englishman in Scotland the standard reply to ‘the English are no good at penalties’ is ‘at least we get far enough to get to penalties!’
I remember a ‘TV expert’ claiming if too early in the game for Batista to get sent off! Even after that Uruguay’s approach had psyched Scotland out. That was pretty decent Scottish side too.
In general if England are playing I support them, if Scotland are playing I support them. I can’t get into the them and us stuff that some of my workmates seem obsessed with. I spent 30 years watching football regularly as a neutral (1300 grounds from Wembley Stadium to park pitches), so it’s water off a duck’s back.
Rob
June 15, 2014 at 15:47 #482492I was really proud of them last night and it’s brave of the manager to play such an inexperienced team. Gerrard was visibly upset by the result and Rooney was awful.
June 15, 2014 at 19:50 #482506England were much better to a degree, attacked and countered with pace and look dangerous but the trouble is those tactics need to be used when playing in Europe not Brazil as Italy had double the possession and kept the ball moving making the England players run and work in the heat. How many players went down with cramp? I think 3 but deffo 2 Stirling and Cahill both England ones. Rooney was shocking aside from the cross which set up the goal he missed a sitter and fluffed a corner ‘oh, the pitch’ says the experts but this lad is on £30,000,0000,000 a week. Gerrard wasn’t great was he his night was summed up when he got tackled by the ref.

June 16, 2014 at 19:26 #482586BTW did anyone else read an article in one of last week’s
Times
World Cup supplements about a coach who got so p*ssed off by England’s lack of technique / skill that he went off to Brazil to find out how they coached their youngsters. He came back to the UK and, despite some initial opposition from the old guard, managed to get the Brazilian method introduced more and more throughout England. The guy was really optimistic about the future of English football. Can’t remember the chap’s name and, as the paper is pay to view, can’t give link to it.
The story had a headline about players being two-footed. The current England squad probably has more players at ease with either foot than any previous English World Cup squad, and they’re nearly all youngsters who’ve benefitted from the techniques this coach imported.
If you haven’t read it, it’s certainly worth the effort to seek it out.
Tend to agree with the negative comments re. Gerrard and Rooney on thread.June 16, 2014 at 21:53 #482615Agree with what is being posted about Gerard and Rooney they just didn’t turn up but overall I thought it wasn’t a bad performance by England sterling is a quality player and Sturidge always looked dangerous I still think England can come out of this group they have the makings of a decent team and I still believe they can go far in the tournament
June 19, 2014 at 20:56 #483132Sh*t is an understatement. Those who saw the ‘Friendlies in Florida’ knew what we were capable of as a footballing nation…….Nothing, absolute nothing! Gerrard should retire, thats twice he’s cocked up massively, once for Liverpool and again for his country.Captain fantastic? Yeh right.
June 20, 2014 at 08:27 #483198Thought that was a great header on to his mate Suarez

Never mid there’s always Euros 2016. 50 years since a last major trophy has a certain ring to it
