Daphne used to annoy me a bit. The way she said she did not know the answer so she would have a guess and it was always right. Who was she trying to fool?!

Agree about Daphne, Cork. She always played the “little old lady” routine, but I bet she carried a brick in her handbag.

A group of people from work went on the show a few years ago. They said Daphne and Chris Hughes were both arrogant. The only one they said was pleasant to them was Kevin.

To watch nerds that replace a cup.of cocoa with a thick Britannica at bedtime is painful to watch for those whose brains consist mainly of tittle tattle and the daily shopping list.

I rather like Daphne and could find a shipwreck with her all the interesting and even more so, if lacking a sextant, and if she is the one that won millionaire that would be my opener – the bank manager will at least want you back.

I believe she’s a saver more than a spender.. She does look a bit thatcherish and stern but I put it down to too strict an upbringing, and forced washing ups draining the joy from her face – but the occasional smile is like pennies from heaven drawn from her large well protected bank. Oh Daphne !

Sextant : Used by shipwrecked couples for determining the angle between the horizon and a celestial body to determine longditude and latitude and from that position. You’d need an egg head to use it.

Judith is the one who won millionaire and is still one of the Eggheads. Daphne quit a few years ago.

To be fair to Daphne and her “guesses”, I suspect part of being good at quizzes is having a breadth of knowledge and a logical mind so that you can have a good stab at the answer even when you don’t know it.

She probably was guessing when she said she was, but these were far from random guesses, and much more likely to be correct.

Slightly off topic but ive been waiting for it seems like weeks now for the finalists on Pointless to pick “decades of grand national winners” as their jackpot question. The question keeps popping up on the board and I am trying to spot the racing fans amongst the contestants.  I’m assuming when somebody with some knowledge does go for it a “pointless answer” will be assured.

When questioned on what topic they would like to see come up most people seem to reply “football or Harry Potter”…..

I think these are being repeated seemorebusiness as I’m sure I saw the “decades of Grand National winners” answered a while back. As you predicted, the contestants cleaned up (almost all of the names were, depressingly, pointless).

Even worse, his week’s Mastermind asked “which English classic race did Adayar win this year?”. Even if you couldn’t remember his name, you’d think “Derby” would be the obvious guess but not a clue.

At least the answer “Royal Ascot” bore some connection to the sport. Would have been worse if she had guessed “The Boat Race”!

They are currently re-running the set of Pointless programmes which run up to the “Decades of Grand National winners” so be prepared to clean-up again! Their problem has presumably been running out of shows “in the can” after Covid hit.

My problem comes if they have questions on current TV, Film or Music and no doubt some would piss themselves laughing at my efforts in those categories, yet I would consider myself a pretty decent quizzer, “Quizzy Monday” addict and all that! Popular music disappeared into a black hole around about 1990…, IMO!

Not a great surprise to be fair as racing generally isn’t high on the majority of joe public’s radar if at all – kind of ironic that these are a lot of the same type people that the BHA will try to convince you have a bad ‘perception’ of the sport that needs to be improved and/or pandered to in order for the sport to survive going forward.

I have seen two questions about racing on “The Chase” recently. Neither contestant answered correctly. To be fair, neither was that easy if you did not follow racing.

One was “Which of these horse races is held latest in the year? Derby, Cheltenham Gold Cup or Grand National.” The contestant answered the Gold Cup. The Chaser (Mark Labbett) got it right.

The other was “Which famous horse race takes place on Boxing Day?”. I cannot remember all the options but the contestant got it wrong. Paul Sinha correctly answered the King George and explained when the other two races were run as well.

Marlingford – I never saw Daphne “guess” wrong! I think she just liked doing a dotty old lady routine, when in fact she was a serial TV and radio quiz winner.

“<span style=”background-color: #f2f4f4; color: #000000; font-family: ‘Source Sans Pro’, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;”>CJ is worth looking up if you don’t know what happened to him since leaving Tank. A truly bizarre story.”</span>

What happened?  And I echo the Daphne comments.  Silly auld bint.

I bet Daphne was gutted when she saw the encyclopaedias were a prize. Last thing she needed.

Some very poor prizes on there, Marlo, can’t blame them for gambling the treasures that they’d won… A rug and a canteen of cutlery
