Just seen the following question asked on the Channel 5 quiz.
Which of these horses did NOT win the Grand National?
Red Rum, Desert Orchid or Aldaniti.
The contestant answered Red Rum. Only the most famous National horse ever.
Maybe public interest in racing is even lower than I thought?
Jeremy Vine then said to the Eggheads, “Was Red Rum the horse who was kidnapped?”
I give up!
November 22, 2021 at 18:53 #1568580Hate that programme. The Eggheads always get piss-easy questions.
November 22, 2021 at 19:00 #1568581The challengers often make a big mistake by not taking on Kevin Ashman in the head to head rounds. With him in the final game, their chances of winning are greatly reduced. They have to take a chance and try to knock him out.
November 22, 2021 at 20:46 #1568614Seeing as Jeremy Vine is a journalist, it’s pretty dispiriting that he doesn’t know the distinction between Shergar and Red Rum from a news and current affairs perspective even if he has minimal interest in racing.
November 22, 2021 at 20:49 #1568616I really wish I hadn’t read this thread.
They should all be taken out and shot.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"November 22, 2021 at 20:55 #1568621What was the age of this contestant?
Value Is EverythingNovember 22, 2021 at 21:01 #1568623If you read the dumb Britain column in Private Eye you won’t be surprised by this.
November 22, 2021 at 21:36 #1568632I don’t know the contestant’s age, but would expect a decent quizzer to know about Red Rum and Shergar whatever their age, and also a 56-year old journalist such as Mr Vine.
Re the wider public, I have a nasty feeling that recognition of any racehorse past or present has been falling quite relentlessly in recent years. I wonder what proportion of people in their 20s know who Red Rum was, or indeed who Tiger Roll is.
November 22, 2021 at 22:07 #1568638The contestant was a middle aged man.
November 22, 2021 at 22:10 #1568639Agree about Vine, Marlingford. It is not the first time on this quiz when he has shown quite worrying ignorance for someone who is supposed to be a journalist.
November 22, 2021 at 22:20 #1568640Theres a reason that show is now on channel 5
Probably the least entertaining quiz on TV
November 22, 2021 at 22:27 #1568641<p style=”text-align: left;”>I’ve not seen this for years, and I’m not one to stick up for Vine by any means, but does he perhaps have to play dumb to set up the conversation for the Eggheads to wow us all* by further showing off their knowledge? As I said I don’t watch it but it seems like the idea might be for the Eggheads to swoop in and correct him. These things are probably even more scripted and contrived than they appear.</p>
*I’ll leave up to you to decide whether knowing the diffence between Red Rum and Shergar is impressive knowledge for professional quiz players.November 22, 2021 at 22:53 #1568644I guess that couldn’t be ruled out Richard, though quiz show hosts playing dumb isn’t something I’ve noticed much of, even on shows involving “experts” whose reputations need to be played up.
I’d have thought that for the sake of his reputation someone such as Vine would not agree to such an approach. The reasons might be different, but I’m pretty unimpressed regardless of whether his ignorance is real or pretend!

Jezza definitely doesn’t play dumb, but I guess he doesn’t follow the gee gees much- same with the contestant who thought that Rummy had never won the GN.
Have watched Eggheads for many years going back to the time of old Daphne and the odd C.J de Mooi. Quite a good gang now with Kevin the stand-out, as ever. I’d wondered why ‘Tremendous Knowledge’ Dave, who took over from CJ, wasn’t part of it now, but on googling I now know that he’s no longer with us
November 22, 2021 at 23:06 #1568648Yes difficult to know. I’ve not heard his radio show for a long time either but some of the stuff he came out with on that was pretty cringeworthy. 10/11 he’s genuinely a bit ignorant, 10/11 he’ll do anything for money I say.
November 22, 2021 at 23:08 #1568649CJ is worth looking up if you don’t know what happened to him since leaving Tank. A truly bizarre story.
November 23, 2021 at 04:54 #1568680Thinking of Eggheads and horse racing, Pat Gibson is one of the few people to win £1 million on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” His £1 million question was on horse racing:
Which of these races is not part of the American Triple Crown?
Arlington Million, Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont.
Pat answered correctly after using his 50/50 and Phone A Friend but he said he knew anyway.
The episode was shown over the weekend on one of those channels which shows old programmes. Not taking anything away from him but I thought his questions were a bit easier than some contestants face.
