It is rumoured that the Coronation will be on the first Saturday in June next year, which might mean the Derby has to move:
October 10, 2022 at 22:06 #1618048Back to Wednesday?
October 10, 2022 at 23:55 #1618052Assuming the Coronation will be on that day then how about moving the meeting back to Wednesday and combine it into one super meeting starting at 1pm with the last three races being the Coronation Cup, Oaks and the Derby being run at say 6pm.
October 11, 2022 at 09:13 #1618062Someone mentioned the Coronation might be on June 2nd as it was the date of the Queen’s Coronation. In which case there wouldn’t need to be a change to Derby Day. Maybe they would run the Oaks & Coronation on the Sunday.
I wouldn’t be in favour of having all the races on one day as there are too many mediocre racing days as it is and what if the ground was very soft and the Derby was the last race of the day as some have suggested? Doubt Andrew Cooper would be too happy at that thought.October 11, 2022 at 11:03 #1618066I think Steve Mellish was floating the Americanised idea of a “Super Day.”
The USA race on dirt and Firm turf.
I don’t think a “Cooperfied” watered Epsom could stand up to two 1m4f Group 1s the same day, never mind three.
Remember his greatest masterpiece – the Oaks that looked like a mid-winter Irish bumper when Snowfall won it!

There’s no drama, no betting on a coronation, we already know the name of the winner!
October 11, 2022 at 14:28 #1618081Yeah, move the Coronation to a Wednesday, but that would require a B/H and we’ve had too many recently….can’t have another one, big business won’t like it.
October 11, 2022 at 15:13 #1618089I know what a B/J is but what is a B/H?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysOctober 11, 2022 at 15:35 #1618094If they do decide on the Coronation being on Saturday then everything else will most likely have to move because the logistics/security will override other major events taking place on the same day. FA Cup likely to go to the Sunday and the Derby will get lost in the shuffle because more people will watch the footy on tv (especially with it being on the main channel) whilst the derby would be moved to either ITV2/3/4 depending on the schedule.
Yes the ground could be an issue with having one day for the 3 G1 races but it is not like they move them to be the first race of the meeting to ensure they get the best of the ground if it is soft, the year Snowfall won the Oaks it was the 5th race of a 7 race card with the Coronation Cup being the 3rd race. The Oaks was run almost 6.97s slower than standard on ground officially good to soft (clearly it was soft) but by the following day for the Derby Adayar’s time (also the 5th race of the day) was slow by only 1.15s on officially good to soft ground.
For information purposes, in 11 runnings since 2012 the Derby has been run:
6 times on good ground
3 times on good to firm ground (that was a bit of a shocker)
2 times on good to softSo you would have to be very unlucky to get a soft ground Derby in the first place but maybe it would encourage COTC not to pre water the ground in the run up to the race if the weather forecast suggested dodgy weather in that period.
October 11, 2022 at 17:54 #1618105LD73, Is the Derby not “lost” now with it being on the same day as the FA cup final. ITV will show the cup final on the main channel with the Derby on ITV4.
October 11, 2022 at 18:00 #1618109The solution is simple: Hold the Coronation and FA Cup Final on Epsom Downs with The Derby as (almost) the grand finale.
Your itinerary
Noon: First Half Of The Cup Final
1.00 Woodcote Stakes
1.10pm: Second Half Of The Cup Final
2.10 Diomed Stakes
2.30 Coronation
3.00 Coronation Cup (clever, eh?!)
3.35 The Oaks
4.10 The Dash
4.50 The Derby
5.15 Ritual Stoning Of The ITV Racing Team
6.00 The Police Arrive to arrest mysterious entrepreneurial event organiser Ida Vies

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 11, 2022 at 18:11 #1618111Yes, it is hanging on by its fingernails – so there is even more reason to change things up and not just hide behind the status quo of ‘its on a Saturday, so a bigger audience is guaranteed even if we have to share it with another sport’ way of thinking.
Its never going to be as popular as in its heyday but that doesn’t mean just accepting what they can get sharing a Saturday with the FA Cup (which also isn’t as popular as it once was) and doing just decent numbers on an alternate main channel.
This is the perfect opportunity to try something different, if going back to a Wednesday is a non starter, how about moving it back a weekend and doing a Saturday Coronation Cup/Oaks and a Sunday Derby, so it doesn’t have to compete with a more popular sport’s flagship event.

On a point of trivial interest, I have a souvenir mug for the Coronation of Edward VIII – an event that never happened!
October 11, 2022 at 18:31 #1618117Was Little Big Bear consulted prior to reaching this highly-contentious decision?
While Old Rowley The Third is getting a crown stuck on his noggin, LBB is being deprived of the chance to strut his stuff on the Rowley Mile!
