Will the Coronation cause the cancellation of these fixtures? I am not so sure.
It seems like Charles III wants a cut price, pound shop Coronation that only lasts an hour. Once that is over, what is there to stop sport going ahead as usual?

We don’t know that His Majesty’s people weren’t looking in and saw sense as a result…
Disappointed that Ian’s excellent sounding itinerary won’t get a look in though.

Not as disappointed as me – I’ve got a job lot of suddenly-redundant stones to get rid of now and the price is crashing through the floor.

Yes, I was on at 33s and 25s..

October 11, 2022 at 19:07 #1618127Delighted for you, sir.
Whatever I backed may not have completed the course – it’s hard to tell when they’re all caked in mud.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 11, 2022 at 19:12 #1618128Watching a replay of “Luck on Sunday” where one of the subjects in the Talking Points feature was the possible date of the Coronation and the Derby.
Steve Mellish suggested Epsom should be a one day meeting with 10 races, the last three being the Coronation Cup, Oaks and Derby.
Cannot see that happening. Would ITV really want to be showing racing at about 6pm?
I doubt the police would be happy either, with everyone leaving Epsom at the same time.
October 11, 2022 at 19:24 #1618129“I think Steve Mellish was floating the Americanised idea of a “Super Day.”
Yes, I alluded to this earlier in the thread.
I get where Mellish is coming from – and IMO he’s one of the few intelligent people in the racing media who thinks outside the box without being absurd – but I don’t know think that sort of Breeders’ Cup style fixture would work over here for reasons already stated.

I have a lot of time for Mellish as well but 10 race cards are not part of our culture and the main race being the last race would not work here.
Think of Cheltenham Gold Cup day, for example. Even through the television you could hear how loud and raucous the crowd had become by the time of the Mares Chase. It was louder still by the time of the Martin Pipe, after a few more pints had been sunk.
The idea of the Gold Cup or any big race going ahead in that atmosphere is not appealing. A lot of racegoers (myself included) like the option of making an exit after the main race (or the race after) in order to avoid the boozy crowd and travel home when it is quiet.
October 11, 2022 at 20:06 #1618140I was at Cheltenham on Gold Cup Day and it was not a nice atmosphere near the end and couldn’t believe some in the media thought it was brilliant.
October 11, 2022 at 20:31 #1618149Will be interesting to see what view the sporting bodies take as to whether they go-ahead with the fixtures or not as the Premier League are due a full day of matches and you would imagine one (if not more) of the London teams may have a home game that would potentially cause issues re policing etc.
I guess you could argue the point that racing meetings on that day are all well away from the London area and could go ahead as planned and maybe the courses can arrange for large screen(s) to be set up to show the Coronation live if they do go-ahead with racing.
October 11, 2022 at 20:33 #1618151Presumably the Saturday fixtures in London could be moved to Sunday.
October 11, 2022 at 21:00 #1618152Policing/other resources is the only reason to move any sporting fixtures, another shutdown would be ridiculous tbh. As has been said, easy enough to switch football matches in London, been plenty of Friday/Sunday/Monday fixtures this season.
October 11, 2022 at 22:00 #1618161Deleted – wrong thread
October 11, 2022 at 23:33 #1618165Should move it to be part of the Racing League to attract more people to the sport..

October 12, 2022 at 10:02 #1618183The Queen wouldn’t have allowed this to happen. It would have been on a quiet Tuesday like her own was.
I’m surprised at Camilla, I thought she was supposed to be a racing fan?
October 12, 2022 at 10:09 #1618184There would be calls for another bank holiday if it was a weekday. There’s already two each in April and May, although could have moved one of the May ones I suppose.

The first I heard she was a racing fan was after The Queen died and speculation as to what would happen to her horses began.
Nothing would surprise me tbh – sounds like that’s 2,000 Guineas Day knackered.
