Love this race, but fiendishly difficult to plough through, and things not made any easier with half the field having multiple entries.

The Mullins Camp took it last year with Bleu Berry, and he’s in there again. He’s not the only entry from the yard.

Not surprisingly, there are loads who appeal here, and first word goes to a horse who I’ve bet for The Ryanair, The Storyteller (16’s). I said that there was always a chance that he go back over timber this year, and although Elliot has confirmed that The Ryanair is the preferred target, it would be no surprise to me if he trapped here, and he would be a massive player if he did. He’s got a full squad entered though, and there’s no way you could take that strong a view on any of his here, it’s a bloody minefield. Quick mention to Farclas 33’s, Cracking Smart (25’s), and A Toi Phil (50’s). That trio are really jumping out as well, but it’s just not possible to be too strong on any of them from the yard right now, but gun to my head, those would be the picks.

Cut The Mustard, Uradel, Stormey Ireland, and Mr Adjudicator all appeal from Closutton, but on his run at Gowran behind Presenting Percy, and very definitely not on his form over fences, I would have Kilultagh Vic as a very interesting contender here at 33’s. He really has been a big disappointment, but as he showed last month, he can still turn it on, and he has to be given serious respect at that kind of price.

Nicholls won this a few years back, and from his entries, the one of particular interest is Brio Conti 20’s, just for the manner of that win last weekend. Assuming he doesn’t bounce, then he looks one who’ll surely progress, and he looks a fair price. At an even fairer price though, is Old Guard 50’s. I’m happily drawing a line through that Fontwell run, and I think he’s worth considering for this, having ran well in it two years back. Be interesting to see how he gets treated when the weights are published, though he looks an equally dark horse for The County as well.

Lil Rockerfeller 33’s is another who took in that Fontwell race, and having shelved the campaign over the larger obstacles, he’s tumbling down the weights nicely for a horse who was just pipped in The Stayers two years back. I’m surprised he’s drifting.

Others who I like are Seddon, Not Many Left, Coole Cody, We Have A Dream, and Ex Patriot, but for now, it’s just too tough, and no way am I ready to go with this one.

That might change though if I seen any movement in the market for the Joseph O’Brien trained Early Doors. I really think that this is a talented animal, and I’m very happy with how he’s been campaigned. There just has to be more to come from him, and though he other options, I’d be very happy to see him here.

Sensibly, no bet for now then, but the O’Brien horse would be my early #1, with a few others on the shortlist….

    Early Doors 25’s

    Kilultagh Vic 33’s
    Farclas 33’s
    A Toi Phil 50’s

As always , a great read VTC. The Irish one I’ve been waiting for in this (or the Martin Pipe) is Canardier ((Dermot A McLoughlin). He won well at the October meeting on what his trainer openly stated was a fact-finding mission for March. Needs quickish ground but runs well fresh and at 33/1 is an interesting bet.

Good luck BoF, and a decent shout.

    Tully East 33/1 NRNB

May struggle to get in or go Martin Pipe but he’s some price if he does run here. Running off a lower mark than he did when winning the Close Brothers on the same track and back on nice ground over the right trip he should go well.

Early Doors is my early play here, I just think they’ll prefer this to carrying top weight in The Martin Pipe, but obviously made sense to go NRNB

Uradel given a British ratiung of 137; unlikely to get in here off that mark; most likely Martin Pipe. I thought hed get 140 at least.

Didn’t take my own advice, and missed the 50’s, but I’ve added A Toi Phil here.

A Toi Phil 33’s EW 5 Places NRNB

Whiskey Sour for me here at 16/1 each way.

Couldn’t have Kilultagh Vic for any race short of 3 miles.

This has never been a race where I’m that desperate for an Antepost, but got three on the go this season, and I’d better knock it on the head now.

A Toi Phil is just a speculative stab at the price, as I’m convinced he’s a plot and don’t want to miss him, but I’m still very very keen on Early Doors.

I’ve had another look though, and I keep going back to Lil Rockerfeller, and I’d have him up there with Early Doors. Yes, he could go Stayers route again, but I just think he can easily make the frame in this, and with that run in The Stayers two years back, I just think he should head here with his current mark.

    Second stab –

    Whiskey Sour 16/1

Off a mark of 144, the yard must think he’s still well handicapped considering they punted him to 9/2F in the galway hurdle last year off 143.
Ran well in the County when third last year on heavy ground, think this style of race and bit of better ground will suit.
Willie likes to win this with a horse that’s running fresh, Arctic Fire springs to mind, and think this lad will run well.

Definitely a wait and see job, but Lil Rockefeller and Whiskey Sour would be of interest should they trap here.

Cheers Kev, I hope that works out for them, I’d love to see him win after being so close two years back.

Like the look of Acapella Bourgeois here at a big price.

Needs soft ground and destroyed Road To Respect over fences a couple of years ago. Owner and trainer pulled off a big punt with Total Recall last year going back to hurdles. Entered in the MP race as well though.

I’ve went with Acapella Bourgeois here as well Botchy, and I will be covering him in The Martin Pipe as well.

I am also following bayofreedom with my other selection, Canardier, and a lot of that is based on his Cheltenham win.

None of my original picks going here, but NRNB saves the day once again.

Starting from scratch here, and one of my last AP’s is Farclas at 20’s, obviously NRNB as well.

I like the idea of Acapella Bourgeois as well, bet him for the last two festivals, and I’ll probably bet him if he runs this week, while stablemate Kilultagh Vic is also still up there for me.

    Farclas 20’s NRNB
