March 23, 2022 at 13:20 #1589464“TTC, you are reading far too much into Epatante being a Champion Hurdle winner.”
No I’m not. Jonbon wouldn’t beat her 3L. A Champion Hurdler versus an average Novice. Ridiculous.

March 23, 2022 at 13:33 #1589466I amended my post to say he would merely beat her, TTC. Not necessarily by three lengths.
Constitution Hill would beat her – by considerably more than 3 lengths.
March 23, 2022 at 13:36 #1589467Jonbon would not get anywhere near a CH winner. Wakey wakey mate.

March 23, 2022 at 14:18 #1589475This game is all about opinions, opinions make the market, and while I often disagree with others I would never try to be condescending or patronising.
If I ever fail in that endeavour, I apologise.
I love strong opinions, even if I disagree, and I respect the authors of those opinions for getting off the fence and not being scared to be wrong.
I think Constitution Hill will end up joining Night Nurse, Monksfield and Istabraq as one of the all-time great Champion Hurdlers – if I’m wrong, I’m wrong.
Mickey seems (correct me if I’m mistaken) to be saying Galopin Des Champs is a better Cheltenham Gold Cup prospect than Constitution Hill is a Champion Hurdle prospect.
I don’t agree, but I respect his strong opinion.
CAS seems to be saying Jonbon too could beat Honeysuckle.
While I think without Constitution Hill in the race, Jonbon is still a worthy Supreme winner in a better time than the mare, I don’t think I would go that far.
But on a scale of one to ten for having the balls of steel to get off the fence and deliver a strong view, CAS gets an ELEVEN off me.
I would far rather read highly opinionated views like that than endless fence sitting here.
And TTC, of course, is TTC – try being condescending or patronising to him and you’re lighting the blue touch paper and need to hide behind the nearest shed to watch the fireworks.

To sit on the fence is to remain neutral, to refuse to take sides in a dispute; often used in a derogatory way about someone who lacks the courage to decide.
This dispute has two sides. On one side of the fence we have a group of participants who have decided that Constitution Hill is/will be the best hurdler for at least 20 years. On the other side of the fence the second group has decided that more evidence is needed before that description can be justly applied.
That’s the two sides of the fence taken care of so who exactly is sitting on it?
March 23, 2022 at 16:26 #1589492Nothing to apologise for TTC. No offence was ever taken.
March 23, 2022 at 17:34 #1589497imo At level weights it would be a photo finish between Jonbon and Honeysuckle right now.
Can’t see him beating Honeysuckle with her 7 lb allowance though.
If kept hurdling next season it’s quite possible Jonbon could make that 7 lb up.
Jonbon improving as he fills that substantial frame…
But also has the size to make a better chaser, so will in all probability go that route.Value Is EverythingMarch 23, 2022 at 17:38 #1589498I honestly think this point of view is stone crackers. A 15/15 dual Champion would need to pull out all of the stops against…..Jonbon!
Why? Because he cost a bloody fortune? He is miles away.

March 23, 2022 at 18:25 #1589502Kilcruit wasn’t far behind Jonbon. If we follow some of the above logic through, it suggests he too wouldn’t have been far away in this year’s Champion Hurdle. I am a big fan of the horse, but struggle to believe that.
March 23, 2022 at 18:30 #1589503I’m not having Jonbon beating Honeysuckle but
Kilcruit benefitted from coming off the strong pace also Jonbon was taken out of his zone by CH waltzing past him.
Had CH not been in the race Jonbon conserves more energy.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

I knew that would get you going TTC.If Jonbon and Honeysuckle run to their Cheltenham form it would not be as close as a photo finish at level weights, Honeysuckle would win but closer than you expect. However, Honeysuckle may well be on the downgrade now.
I don’t know, but imo Honeysuckle ran to around a Timeform rating of 158. That’s some 7 lbs less than last year. Although Timeform still have Honeysuckle on 165 they do say she did not run to it this year and imo that rating of 165 deserves to be downgraded.
Jonbon’s Timeform rating is 151, a figure of similar ability to many Supreme winners. So on Cheltenham form there is 7 lbs between the two at level weights.
Honeysuckle 158 last time out and on the downgrade, Jonbon 151 and on the upgrade. So if they met next time out at level weights those ratings may well be closer still if both continue to go in contrasting directions formwise. Yes possibly a photo finish.
Again, with one on the downgrade and one on the upgrade, next March could (only could) see Jonbon being able to give the 7 lbs.
Value Is EverythingMarch 23, 2022 at 23:06 #1589529You’d think Nicki would have known he had a wide-margin champion hurdler in his stable….
March 23, 2022 at 23:29 #1589530Fully agree with TTC. A horse that is 15/15 and was in 14/15 fav would be beaten by a horse that doesn’t even stay 2 full miles. Remember his first two wins: they walked the first furlong and he was out of his comfort zone at Haydock. Now after being destroyed in the Champion Hurdle he would be a 2-time CH winner. No way, racing doesn’t take place on a sheet of paper and it’s not determined by Timeform or any other ratings. Honeysuckle is a proper CH and a triple Festival winner. Jonbon is only the winner of a few novice hurdles. Nothing special to me.
And by the way, with DD as a hare a lot of Supremes would have been a lot faster than they really were.
