“I expect Jonbon can as well.”
Come off it Corky man.

March 23, 2022 at 10:29 #1589429“CH could well arrive at Cheltenham next March having won a couple of four runner non events in which he started 1/10.”
Entirely plausible.
But that wouldn’t stop him being odds-on come next March.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 23, 2022 at 10:33 #1589430“It looked like Blackmore had to push her quite hard to beat Epatante by 3 lengths last week.”
After the last hurdle, Blackmore whipped Honeysuckle 4 times. Boinville didn’t use the whip at all.
March 23, 2022 at 10:39 #1589431There have been many comparisons drawn in the modern era on this thread, as very recently mentioned Pinatubo on the flat and going back a page or two to the perhaps more relevant Envoi Allen or Samcro.
I must admit that the demise of the latter two did somewhat surprise me, although never had I considered either to be in the same conversation. They were your epitome of the Irish talking horse coming over for the Festival. We knew they were good, but I don’t think any of us to a man ever saw anything from them that made us think he was (to rob a quote from everyone’s favourite budget airline owner) the second coming of Jesus Christ.
The same goes and then some to Pinatubo. We all saw and were impressed with what he did as a two year old, although I didn’t even fancy him for his Guineas (didn’t necessarily expect he’d train on).
Compelling though this thread may be, it seems to be made up of two types; the true judge who can see what they see and know a horse when they see one, and those who believe any horse who trots up by 20 lengths belongs in the same category until they’ve done this repeatedly. Such folk cannot see the wood from the trees and are potentially in the wrong game.
It’ll be the latter who don’t have a particular eye for this type of thing and will probably be bemoaning the ‘boring’ Champion Hurdle we have next season when Constitution Hill goes off 1/3.
March 23, 2022 at 10:51 #1589432Could you try and be a smidge more condescending Tom?

March 23, 2022 at 11:35 #1589440I am surprised that my comment “Most people who follow racing are always looking for a new superstar” has been met with disagreement.
Different people may have more exacting criteria than others, or consider themselves to be more gifted judges than others, but surely that is what any racing fan is hoping for? And however cynical or wise we consider ourselves to be, I suspect human nature means that most of us can get a bit carried away on occasions.
March 23, 2022 at 11:51 #1589443I think Jonbon would beat Epatante, TTC. Not a particularly controversial view. Even Henderson admits the Champion Hurdle she won was average.
This season she could not beat Not So Sleepy at Newcastle and was all out at the finish to win at Kempton.
I would be very disappointed if Jonbon is inferior to her.
March 23, 2022 at 12:17 #1589447I completely disagree. A very dodgy novice hurdler is better “by three lenghts” than a Champion?
Drivel mate.

March 23, 2022 at 12:28 #1589448He is not a dodgy novice hurdler. Take out a freak and he was a convincing winner of the Supreme with a very respectable time figure.
March 23, 2022 at 12:36 #1589450Catch yourself on mate. A battered Supreme horse 3L better than a Champion? Really?

March 23, 2022 at 12:41 #1589451I was typing too fast so I have slightly amended the original post to read:
“I reckon the Henderson camp know Constitution Hill can beat Epatante by more than 3 lengths. I expect Jonbon can at least beat Epatante as well.”
I believe Jonbon can beat Epatante. Not so sure about Honeysuckle, especially with her 7 lbs allowance.
It is academic anyway because I am sure he will be novice chasing next season.
March 23, 2022 at 12:48 #1589455Absolute drivel. A horse absolutely smashed in the Supreme would beat a Champion Hurdler?

Loooool I love this thread
March 23, 2022 at 12:56 #1589458TTC, you are reading far too much into Epatante being a Champion Hurdle winner. She won a weak renewal. Even Henderson admits it.
Since the classic era of hurdling in the 1970s, here are just a few of the winners:
Beech Road
Flakey Dove
Collier Bay
Make A Stand
Hors La Loi
Rooster Booster
Sublimity
Punjabi
Rock on Ruby
JezkiAre you going to suggest all the above are great horses because they won the Champion? A very good novice could have beaten most of them.
I like Epatante. She landed me a nice bet when she won but she is not a great hurdler.

Wow, was your granda that old bloke at the start of “Into the West”? You must truly have the mystical gift. Like your one off the Ladbrokes ad. Constitution Hill will be lining up in the champion hurdle next year and we’ll be all ” Tom, Babes come in here quick I think this is your horse”.
