“Geldings are not allowed to run in the Middle Park, Dewhurst, 2,000 Guineas, Derby, St James’s Palace and the St Leger. No one complains about that, so why should they run in the Arc?”
Well, I’m complaining about that. Geldings winning classics is good for the sport. Hard to keep fans interested when the top horses are whisked off to stud early.
Claiming that geldings have an advantage is ridiculous. Testosterone is a performance enhancer. Geldings are usually easier to manage in a stable, yes, but it’s not “unfair” to let them run in the same races as intact horses.
It is good that the Arc has caught up to the times. Geldings were barred from the Jockey Club Gold Cup until 1957, and even with all the great horses who won the race before that it is the great gelding Kelso’s 5 wins (1960-1964) that stand foremost in its history.
