“saw that the horse had had enough for the season.” (once Henderson told him what he was seeing, one suspects).

    We shall see going forwards!

Absolutely – was delighted to take the 3/1 after the Supreme, but doubt if I will ever have money on the horse again.

Looks like it will be CH and his aptitude for jumping the biger obstacles alone that will decide if the clash with GDC in a future Gold Cup becomes a reality based on these comments

I’d love to see this. Who knows, maybe in 2 yrs time it will be GDC going for his 3rd GC, and CH going for the CH/GC double. We can but dream.

Literally nothing about the Aintree Hurdle yesterday suggested to me that Constitution Hill has been crying out for 2m4f+, let alone to go chasing.

Slickest jumper of a hurdle I’ve seen since Night Nurse and I hope they ignore all the bandwagon jumpers and recent additions to his fan club and stay hurdling with him.

I agree fully Ian. They have possibly the greatest 2m hurdler ever so why jeopardise that. Its his speed which makes him special.

He’s still pretty much unbeatable over 2m4f but the extra 4f took the magic away.

Got to see him for the first time in the flesh on Thurs – nice spec around the paddock then leaving jocked up, then half jogged down to the second last and as you do at such points got chatting to another genuine fan of the sport who was expressing concern with the rumored switch to fences
and the degrading in status of hurdle racing – we both agreed that Altior should have been given a crack at the CH.

Henderson won’t even school him over fences.. He’ll just say he has to keep the media at arms length but they decided to keep him to hurdles imo

Finally got to see the race as hospital appointments caused me to miss it live.

In my opinion, only an idiot would send this horse chasing.
Henderson is far from an idiot but I don’t know anything about the owner!

At the end of the day, if the owner feels strongly enough about wanting him to go chasing then that is what will happen, unless of course he doesn’t school well but given how slick a jumper of a hurdle he is you would have to think jumping a fence shouldn’t be an issue.

That being said although he was second in a 3m PTP, there is no guarantee that he would stay the Gold Cup trip as plenty of great 3m winners found that final 2F up Cheltenham’s hill beyond them – his dam never won over further than 2m2F although managed a 3rd over 2m4F.

If you watch when Nico finally starts to nudge him along up the run in, he wasn’t pulling away from Sharjah as you might have expected him to. Coincidence that this occurred on his 1st try beyond 2m?

I can fully understand Hendo not wanting to switch from hurdles because potentially outside of Impaire Et Passe (a dark horse that has done everything asked of him so far) there doesn’t appear to be much in the way of competition that he hasn’t dealt with already this season.

“given how slick a jumper of a hurdle he is you would have to think jumping a fence shouldn’t be an issue.”

    I would say it’s a different thing.

I’ve no doubt bored everyone rigid with this already, but I will never forget being at Doncaster in 1978 and through my binoculars watching Night Nurse at the fourth last fully side on a mile from home.

He literally never broke stride and the take off and landing were barely perceptible, incredibly economic.

Night Nurse was a very good horse who went on jump fences well enough, but what I’ve always believed was a big part of him being a great Hurdler was his hurdling.

Constitution Hill, for me, jumps the same way.

You do get chasers, especially at 2m, who get away with “hurdling” their fences – Badsworth Boy used to jump flat and low.

It put him on the deck a couple of times, but it might be what helped him be a multiple Champion Chaser.

But for me the great jumpers of a fence – like Wayward Lad in his pomp – would stand off outside the wings of fences and land way beyond them, making lengths in the air.

That said, we have a current Cheltenham Gold Cup winner who is a really shoddy jumper, just about gets from one side of a fence to another, but is so talented he gets away with it.

Intriguing subject for me – but I think they’d be mad to bow to flakey media and social media pressure when he could easily win multiple Champion Hurdles.

    Chezza,
Hendo will say the right things like “may, might, possibility, thinking about it” he won’t commit
then when he says its hurdles your mate Roger will say Hendo changed his mind again…

Hope it’s not a premonition but here’s my take of Constitution Hill going chasing in a nutshell…

    Hughesey knows.

PS: Chezza’s had the Gloria Victis premonition too.

That said, we have a current Cheltenham Gold Cup winner who is a really shoddy jumper, just about gets from one side of a fence to another, but is so talented he gets away with it.

Think that is rather harsh assessment – he looks a little ungainly over a fence and I think it looked a little worse in the Gold Cup because of where he ended up position wise and was jumping into the back of horses at times but over the last two (after making a mistake 3 out) he was as equally slick as BMG was.

I think the issue with Night Nurse (and this was a comment Easterby made) was that they really left it a year too late to go chasing with him and he tended to hurdle his fences which leaves little margin for error.

For me the slickest fencer was Mill House – he was so quick across a fence that even when on a wrong stride he would lose little to no ground against a rival….you very rarely saw daylight between his stomach and the fence and more often than not he would brush through the top part of it much like some of the French horses do when they come over and run here.
