SOL didn’t look comfortable on the fast ground to me and Buick looked to be holding him together inside that final furlong, was never sure a drop back in trip was the right move for him as I think in the Guineas he just got tired (on his seasonal debut) rather than it being he didn’t stay the trip.
In any case, I think he will need some ease in the ground and if they get that I think a July Cup over a stiff 6F or Prix Maurice De Gheest (6½F) potentially could be targets if they persist in staying at the shorter trip but I do think it is worth another go over a mile again especially as I don’t think Ruling Court will cut much ice at that trip now.
The winner was even more impressive considering she was on her own down the centre of the track, it will be interesting to see where they might go with her next. One would assume the longer sprints like July Cup/Sprint Cup as I am not sure if the Nunthorpe or Abbaye over 5F might be on the sharp side, don’t forget she was 3rd in the Fred Darling over 7F.
June 20, 2025 at 15:41 #1734076Regards the quality of sprinters, its becoming a bit self-fulfilling because you get these sprinters like the sire of the winner today Sands Of Mali who was a good sprinter on his day, he won a Champion Sprint and was 2nd in this very race but he retired quite early for a sprinter, as did Starman who sired the Albany winner after winning one Group 1. Seems to be more and more not very durable sprinters coming through the ranks. Neither of those sires had amazing careers either albeit cut short early to see what they were capable of.
June 20, 2025 at 16:12 #1734079Had any of the true Group 1 horses, Shadow Of Light, Jonquil or Babouche shown their form it would’ve been great for the race. As it is, thy’ll struggle to keep its Group 1 status… And that will mean those of the quality of those three horses are unlikely to take their chance.
