Nice easy looking start for Caravaggio tomorrow. He is 2/5 in the forecast odds for the Group 3 race at Naas.
He would need to win well to maintain his place at the head of the market for The Commonwealth Cup. No doubt a win will see him sliced in for the Commonwealth Cup but I doubt we will learn too much from the race tomorrow.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 21, 2017 at 10:30 #1301705I know some people are loathe to talk up Caravaggio too much prior to his reappearance today, but I think all racing fans should hope for an impressive return from this chap. The sport needs stars to generate interest, and Caravaggio certainly has the potential to be a real titan of the turf. Fingers crossed he wins well at Naas today.
May 21, 2017 at 11:02 #1301710I would agree with that TheGun, we need a proper star to light up the summer, and this horse certainly has the potential to do that job, and I am very hopeful that we see a big performance today.
May 21, 2017 at 16:21 #1301733Yes, Caravaggio is back
May 21, 2017 at 16:27 #1301734That was very impressive. Can’t see anything go past him.
May 21, 2017 at 16:28 #1301735You couldn’t have asked for much more than that from Caravaggio
We got a very good race in prospect coming up.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
May 21, 2017 at 16:35 #1301737Devastating from Caravaggio. Not sure anything bar maybe Lady Aurelia will be able to give him a race at Ascot.
May 21, 2017 at 16:47 #1301739I don’t think it will be cut and dry for him.
Blue Point and Harry Angel are both credible contenders.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
May 21, 2017 at 16:51 #1301741A group 1 horse in a weak group 3. As I said yesterday, it was a race he had to win well and he did it easily.
He looked pretty fit to me today and he faced a ropey looking bunch.
2nd Fav Khukri is almost certainly overrated on 107. When she ran last time, today’s 2nd Psychedelic Funk ran like a drain, recording a RPR of 66, much to my disgust, as I had backed him as a good thing that day. Khukri had gone into that race rated 88 but because Intelligence Cross was 3rd and rated 109, the handicapper lobbed 19 lbs onto Khukri’s mark, that move looks bullshit after today’s run. The second horse in Khukri’s win was Gorane, who came in rated 84 and then got bumped up to 100, a 16 lbs improvement. To me, it is likely that Intelligence Cross is about a stone less of a horse than he was at his peak and that peak is getting quite distant in time now.
Khukri’s Listed race win didn’t stack up today, with beaten horses reversing the form with her and Gorane today. It just wasn’t a great contest I feel.
Caravaggio sluiced in but you would have expected that, even if you really believe that two horses improved by more than a stone last time and then both appeared to regress today.
Stan James go Evens for Caravaggio for the Commonwealth Cup. Woohoo, Brave Stan and Courageous James.
Caravaggio will face much better opponents next time. Maybe he will win it but he won’t carry my money at Evens. That shaped like a Listed Race today if you took Caravaggio out.
Good to see the horse back though and I hope he doesn’t bounce next time. Even money though? That’s awful I feel.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 21, 2017 at 17:01 #1301743I’m not going to back Caravaggio at evens, but it’s not a gross overreaction I think. The horse demolished everything in his path last season, and with the form of O’Brien’s horses so far this season, would you want to lay anything above 6/4 after that performance Steve?
He ran 6f furlong’s 1.5 seconds faster than the ultra impressive Alpha Centauri in the race before, so the times speaks for themselves considering he was quite lazy, and the season debut factor.
May 21, 2017 at 19:33 #1301757Easy to see why he shortened up and even though it is Royal Ascot I suspect there isn’t a massive queue waiting to take him on. There was a point today when you thought Moore had overdone things but the horse picked up really well. If he can sustain a full season he could easily be the top 3yo. Over confidence on the jocks part might be the best (only?) chance of getting him beat. Perhaps he can run through the sprint division and then they might experiment with a longer trip?

Agree Stilvi, an awesome performance given the lay off. Some good older sprinters around this season and will be great to see them racing against each other.
It would be some spectacle to see him in the Nunthorpe
May 21, 2017 at 20:05 #1301763After that performance I shan’t be lumping on anything in this race and will just watch and cheer him on!!
Looks a proper machine!!

3yo horses will run faster than 2yo by a fair way. If Alpha Centauri were to race Caravaggio she would get a massive weight concession, especially given how early in the season it is. I’d probably say 2/1 was about the right price for Caravaggio. I have serious doubts if anything else in that race today is much cop really.
Does anyone else really think that Blue Point couldn’t have gone out there and thrashed that field hollow today? He’d scarcely have come off the bridle in my opinion.
Easy win by Caravaggio, it’s all you could have asked for given the opponents and the fact he was well odds-on. I feel the Khukri form line looks as flimsy as a Chinese Lantern though.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 21, 2017 at 20:41 #1301766ps Having laid him for two Guineas I will break even if he was to win at 2/1

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 21, 2017 at 23:11 #1301783Great to see him back. He gave his rivals a 5L head start and came home 5L ahead under a hands and heels ride, giving weight to his rivals. Aidan said he was carrying a lot of condition, lots to work on. So happy to have kept the faith in him.
May 22, 2017 at 00:00 #1301788Yes it is a case of apples and oranges, but it illustrates my point that his time was good, despite him not being 100%, so his visual impression was not overblown I feel. If Caravaggio had not suffered his injury at the tail-end of last season, and if there had not been so many rumours of him not training-on, I believe he would have justified 2/1 favouritism on last season’s merits alone. So now that he has reappeared in such impressive fashion, I think 11/8, 6/4 is justifiable, though not easy to back.
