There are several of us, especially when we write Geez, instead of Jeez, who don’t realise that we are using a contraction of Jesus.
April 13, 2009 at 14:10 #221605Wow. I ignored this thread based on it’s title but when it reached 9 pages long I just had to look. Fascinatingly entertaining stuff particularly from Craig who has restored my opinion of those defending the American dream…..
April 14, 2009 at 01:48 #221754Ahhhh, Ken – even once you said "euphemism" I did not understand your point.
Once I read Gerald’s post I saw what you meant.
However, how many people use Jesus as an exclamation and are not remotely religious? Plenty. And why shouldn’t they?
However, Gerald is right in my case, I do not use
geez
with any religious connotation. Does that make me a hypocrite? Is that your point?
Frankly, it’s not worth arguing.
Next time I say "oh God" when I spill my glass of milk, I’ll be sure to say "but that’s my God, not your God, Ken (West Derby)."
Can’t be more reasonable than that.

April 14, 2009 at 14:10 #221787Distinct lack of moderation on TRF at the moment.
Having finally figured out how to do it, I think this thread is best locked until Matron or Corm decide what to do with it. Anyone who wants to continue the discussion, can do so in the relevant Lounge thread (somethinhg which was requested several days ago).
April 14, 2009 at 15:22 #221800Sorry, I have been a bit busy of late.
I have moved the topic to here as requested but, I have not had a chance to read the whole thread.
If, there any offensive postings within the thread then, please point me in the right direction.

April 14, 2009 at 15:39 #221805… this forum has a higher hate per post ratio than the betfair forum. .
.. I don’t think so.
April 14, 2009 at 16:27 #221809Gadzooks! I’m shocked at how this thread has twisted and turned while I was away over Easter.
Anyway:-
Clare Balding/Liam Treadwell:- While CB’s comments may have been a in-joke between LT & herself, to the viewing public she came across as the school bully picking fun at her victim of choice – possibly to hide from any insecurities she may have. However, the furore since then is surely OTT. She’s apologised – LT’s moved on, let’s all move on.
Incidentally, with BBC cutting coverage it’s not that likely their paths will cross again haha!
Obama:- You don’t get to be President unless you have some sort of ruthlessness about you. It’s too early to say if he will be a good or bad Prez, but I do have a feeling that this is the USA’s equivalent of when Tony’s "New Labour" swept to power. (Huge euphoria and optomism followed by bitter disappointment). Please note that I do not follow US Politics that closely so will refrain from commenting further.
History will judge Obama – just in the same way they have judged Blair – who incidentally has impeccable timing – bailing out just as the wall were about to crumble round his ivory tower leaving Gordy B to pick up the pieces.
Craig:- We all have differing opinions – that’s what makes the world what it is. Good, bad or whatever. If we all thought the same, felt the same then life might be safer, but it would be blummin dull at the same time. Personally, while I don’t like a lot of things about the current UK Gov’t there are still things that progress has been made – such as more Surestart childcare places and increased Maternity leave. However that is because my wife and I have a small child and this is good for us. However, continually being taxed to the hilt is not. Swings and Roundabouts.
Hope the Racecalling gig goes well. Caught one of your Turfway races and noticed you sounded Australian to begin with but as the races reached their climax you sounded more British – dare I say – with a hint of your old mentor Raliegh Gilbert.
All this from a thread about an ill-judged off the cuff comment by a TV presenter.

April 22, 2009 at 10:29 #222969Getting back to original theme of this thread:-
Grand National winner Liam Treadwell has insisted that he doesn’t hold a grudge against Clare Balding after she joked about his crooked teeth live on air last month.
"BBC sports presenter Balding sparked outrage after suggesting that the jockey could afford expensive dental treatment following his triumph in the race.
The incident, which occurred just moments after Treadwell’s victory, attracted over 1,000 complaints from viewers.
However, speaking to Metro, Treadwell admitted: "It was the best thing Clare said – I’ve had offers to do my teeth for free.
"I’ve got a consultation in London and I’ve got another offer from a dentist in Manchester who backed the winner."
The BBC insisted that Balding "had no intention whatsoever of upsetting or embarrassing" Treadwell following the controversy."

April 22, 2009 at 12:10 #222975Indeed Ugly Mare this forum has a higher hate per post ratio than the betfair forum.
We will see an openly gay premiership footballer before we see an openly gay jockey. No wonder the sport is shrinking and will continue to shrink.
Didn’t Willie Carson go into the chocolate factory ?
April 23, 2009 at 13:27 #223158I asked a question about openly gay jockeys in another forum chat and some names were supplied – my interest being spurred by the fact that being perceived as homophobic is harmful to the image of any sport.
Returning to Liam Treadwell, if you’ve ever seen an ‘early days’ video of Shania Twain she had the same teeth. If you look at her now….
One thing is for certain – nobody will ever forget that Liam rode a National winner. My own view at the time was that the normally personable and articulate Liam was stunned into relative inarticulacy, Clare Balding had run out of things to say and in the heat of the moment opened mouth before putting brain in gear, not realising how it was going to come across. I’ve always valued Clare as a presenter – I particularly enjoyed her Paralympics coverage.
When National jockeys are talked about some don’t seem to come to mind as readily as others. My guess is, that like Mick Fitzgerald, Liam Treadwell’s will be one of the first that comes to mind in the future. I hope he’s also remembered for the great ride he gave Mon Mome!

And, I think you might be thinking of Celine Dion, who had pegs like a Tombstone graveyard until she cashed-in.
Shania, for all her redneck, cracker tendencies, has been a Grade A looker from the off.
April 23, 2009 at 15:12 #223176Got Liam to sign my Grand National book last week; I must say that whatever his teeth are like he’s damn cute!
April 26, 2009 at 06:06 #223668There was a clip of Shania used on Before They Were Famous and trust me, her teeth were very similar to Liam’s.
I know you can’t believe everything you see on TV or read on the Net, however:-
Fact 11 in the Shania Twain Biography is this:- 11. As a kid, two of Shania’s teeth never grew – so she had terrible gaps between them.
From another website: She probably wears false teeth because on a special called behind the music on VHI, they showed a childhood photo of her with a guitar and she had uneven teeth, no lie
She’s got a damn good dentist.
(You are right about Celine Dion also having rubbishy teeth, though!)
May 6, 2009 at 15:55 #225971Am not talking out of my ass. Its pathetic that we have to tread on eggshells nowadays and thats all down to the PC brigade. There are bigger things to worry about than CB commenting on someones teeth
PC gone mad
Only having a go at Clare Balding because she is a lesbian
etc, etc
You can make up any reasons you want – but its all bollocks
The reason why people feel bad about this is because Clare Balding made personal fun of a young lads teeth in front of millions of TV viewers taking a dig at his self esteem and causing him probale embrassment and a self conciouness.
It was done out of her ignorance and insenstivity and that she was just being a complete twat to think it was OK to make fun of the young lad.
