Graeme, I was being facetious.

Anyone remember Gazza Wiltshire’s comment to Rishi about enjoying his Christmas Vindaloo. Wiltshire, Brand, Ross. Now Balding.
Auntie’s getting a
reputation…
April 7, 2009 at 19:53 #220777Hi
What was worse that having mentioned it in the first place anyone with a slightly thinner skin would realised a booboo and have shut up but she continued to press the point. Toe curlingly embarrassingApril 7, 2009 at 20:02 #220780Didn’t see it – I was buying everyone in the bar a drink. I’m going to use one of these for the first time –
April 7, 2009 at 20:35 #220781What a totally stupid woman and what a horrible thing to say to anybody.
April 7, 2009 at 20:40 #220782Would have thought she’d be the last person to take the pi$$ out of someones looks.
Having seen a photo of Treadwell’s girlfriend in the paper’s today, maybe she’s a bit jelous.
April 7, 2009 at 20:59 #220785A strong suspicion remains that all the venom towards Claire on this teeth business is just a pretext to take down a peg someone who is gay. bit of class hatred as well maybe seeping in. If John Francome had been in Claire’s shoes I doubt there would have been more than a murmur.
April 7, 2009 at 21:10 #220787Spitfire, I partially agree with you, but much of the venom here and in other places (from generally moderate commentators), is down to deep resentment at the way the BBC Sport division under Roger Mosey has treated the sport of horse racing. And Claire has hardly manned the braziers in protest.

Absolute bollocks, I dont give a monkeys what team she plays for. What it boils down to is what people consider is rude and ill mannered.
When you have the Microphone in your hand and you are asking the questions you have a certain amount of power. When you use that power to publicly mock someone in front of a national audience, with a complete disregard for the person you are interviewing or basic manners, is what has made this an issue.
Most people who watched this found it absolutely cringeworthy, not because she is a lesbian, but because most people carry themselves much better than that and dont expect such poor form from a TV presenter towards someone who was clearly a bit uncomfortable and undeserving of such treatment in the context of the situation.
The issue at hand is MANNERS, nothing more nothing less. And Balding’s lack of manners, and a very basic level of respect, towards Treadwell were pretty appalling on saturday, plain and simple.
Admittedly, however I do think that her somewhat odd appearance does serve to add to the hypocrisy involved in her attitude towards others who are also aesthetically challenged in different ways.
April 7, 2009 at 21:39 #220790As someone who didn’t see it I can’t comment, but it can’t be any more embarrasing than seeing Johnny Murtagh bear all after the Hurricane Run’s Arc or Frankie effing and blinding after his derby win surely?
You have to take into consideration "previous" in these instances. Has Claire a history of this type of thing? I don’t think so.
Once again I didn’t see it so can’t comment but I hope people are happy now she’s got all this critisism and tune in in the summer to see if willie Carson takes the piss!

Some negative comments under that video…
April 8, 2009 at 00:10 #220799It was completely inappropriate, rude and ignorant. The guy had just won the greatest race of his career and she couldn’t think of anything else to say/ask him? Venetia Williams was enjoying her moment of triumph as well and shouldn’t have had to think of a put down, but if she did, was probably too polite to say it on national television. Further evidence of dumbing down of sport on the BBC. Rishi at the finish – please can we just watch and let the enjoy their moment of glory without a microphone stuck under their noses and asked inane questions? And then the same inane questions asked 5 minutes later? I only watched those ten minutes of the coverage – that was almost too much.
April 8, 2009 at 01:31 #220812The guy needs too see a dentist and get them sorted, that or take claire outside for abit of fisty cuffs if she refused too aplogise too his face, though she would beat the crap of him of she chose the former
April 8, 2009 at 12:58 #220866Am not talking out of my ass. Its pathetic that we have to tread on eggshells nowadays and thats all down to the PC brigade. There are bigger things to worry about than CB commenting on someones teeth
April 8, 2009 at 13:22 #220868Treadwell said: “Of course it was the wrong thing for her to say, and under normal circumstances I might have said something back, but yesterday wasn’t a normal day. I was on top of the world and nothing could ruin that.”
Jockey himself was insulted going by that quote. There is a line between political correctness and downright insulting. Claire Balding crossed that line on Saturday and not for the first time either.
April 8, 2009 at 13:52 #220870Was it Jamie Osborne that used to put his front teeth back in before being interviewed years ago, and that was always a bit of a standing joke? However, there’s a difference between someone who’s lost their teeth through racing, and someone who just had bad teeth. Funny how we follow American trends, albeit years later..if you look at oldish TV programmes the actors didn’t have particularly good teeth; these days every last one of us is supposed to have film star teeth. Still think it was awful what she said, but perhaps when he brings out his autobiography in the future it will give him a good title for it
.

It’s also a shame that society is blighted by people who have a lack of good manners, or fail to treat people with a modicum of respect as a default.
The only people worse are those who suggest that neither manners nor respect matter very much, and that anyone who
does
consider such things worthwhile, is simply being PC ‘nutter’.
Trust me, you are talking out of your ass.
April 8, 2009 at 15:05 #220883Trust me I am not talking out of my ass! Its a valid opinion as is yours. I just think society has bigger problems to worry about than a comment on someones teeth
April 8, 2009 at 16:57 #220896I think your missing the point Marb, everyone makes cock-ups, no-one has a problem with cock ups. However, most people dont see being so ignorant to someone as a cock up, because most people dont talk to each other with such a lack of respect in the first instance.
People make mistakes and no-one is perfect, however there are certain mistakes that are harder to write off than others. Being involved in a car accident is a mistake, being involved in a car accident whilst drunk, doing 130mph in a built up area is something different.
Likewise there is a difference between making a minor faux pas and being outright rude to someone without due cause. Because anyone can be guilty of the former, but most people try to avoid ever being guilty of the latter. I, like most people am not perfect but just because I am not perfect doesnt mean I should be free to talk to people however I so wish, and be beyond criticism for it.
