Two words which, if transposed, certainly have a seismic effect.

“Gamble more, or more gamble?” THAT is the question….

I’d like to add a couple of money saving tips for the winter.

You can avoid the high cost of socialising by simply not having any friends.

Also, don’t pay your gas and electricity bills. Not only do you save that money up front, you can’t spend any more on it when they cut you off.

You could always get put up by her Majesty in one of her prisons, food and heating by the tax payer.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

I recall well the rather expert portrayal of Uriah Heep BY COLIN JEAVONS in the BBC production of ‘David’ in 66. He is a grand 92. It is his sort of bent over umbleness and subservience to the mean streak, that one should adopt inside the abode – where money can be saved.

Incidentally : More – gamble meant in addition to my quote from My Fair Lady.

I have watched no crouching menace in two weeks apart from spying it once once through the REAR WINDOW
on the Saturday just gone. Standby has been on for the full time with a cost of 200 pennies. I was too lazy to bend down further than Heep’s regulatory one foot head and upper torso bend.

I gave in poorly to viscous liquids on a DOUBLE BANGER weekend – this caused gamble to spray words at you. It was never intended as I am a mute but he was able to gain control as I was in La La land and the land of lost sheep.
Good luck to all in your search for savings. Black tea black coffee ( self made ) one biscuit on Saturday night for the pleasure of it and to stop boredom. :good:

Excellent suggestion Rummy, can’t pick any holes in it. I already like porridge so just need to work on my soap handling skills and I’m good to go.

“You can avoid the high cost of socialising by simply not having any friends.”

A particularly outstanding one which I can personally vouch for the effectiveness of over a great many years.

My life has been a perpetual losing battle against universal unpopularity, though, in all fairness, it’s not a struggle I’ve tried that hard with.

We should all be on a mission to – on a point of general principle – have bills that solely comprise the standing charges with literally zero energy consumption this winter.

Once that nirvana is achieved you are in a uniquely-strong position to phone and say: “The standing charge is too high, I’m not paying it, offer me a much-reduced nominal one. If you refuse, our relationship is over, you can cut me off, I’m not kidding, as you can see I use literally zero energy.”

And remember, £400 in government subsidy is heading your way – the scope is there to be in profit by 1st April!

You call it standing charge, I call it £270 a year even if you sit in the dark starving and freezing to death. I can see why they use the former now.

I’ve done the sums on my modest electricity bills (no gas) and will be paying about £10-20 a month while the £400 is being paid to me, net zero may be achievable!

Great line – so great, in fact, I will be stealing it and passing it off as my own: there is no greater compliment as imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.

I too am on a mission to turn an energy profit this winter!

    More handy tips:

Don’t work from home. Go to the office, where heating, electricity, tea, etc, are all free. Take your phone and laptop and charge them at work, saving electricity at home.

And walk everywhere. May take longer but it costs nothing and helps keep you fit.

The amusing meme posted above does raise a serious point for racing. When people are struggling to pay bills, what will be the impact on betting turnover and racing’s finances?

CAS- I think there’s been research which shows that gambling revenues increase when people are struggling financially.

Get rich quick, and all that.

‘And walk everywhere. May take longer but it costs nothing and helps keep you fit.’

Everywhere is within walking distance if you have the time.

I see even Johnson is getting in on the money saving act. Apparently we can save a tenner by buying a new kettle.

Of course if Waitrose would bring back their generous free coffee with any purchase offer we could do away with the energy sapping kettle altogether. The machines remain mothballed in my closest one but crucially still in place.

Glad, that only goes to show how useless those safer gambling adverts are. Especially that one where Paddy Power, Ruby Walsh, Matt Chapman and a girl golfer with an irritating voice tell us that we should never gamble when feeling low and whatever the problem gambling IS NEVER THE ANSWER (as shouted by Chapman).

Difficult to say what impact it will have. Logically, betting should be one of the first things to go when times are tight. I have however served enough punters to know that logic is an alien concept to many.

Plenty of people are doing just fine too, it’s a big crisis but not a universal one.

    As ever, it’s complicated.

    Yes!

Betting turnover holding up this winter would be a big stick for the prohibitionists (for that is what many of them are) to beat the betting hence racing industries with.

What better evidence gambling is addictive hence impervious to the cost of living crisis?

    Worrying times ahead.

But this thread can get us through it!
