I have been keen on Denman for the Gold Cup for a while now, would be more confident if the ground is on the slower side today.

    Leaving for Chelters shortly.

Would love Kauto Star to win his third crown. Winning it back for a second time at the age of eleven – it can’t happen, can it?

I would gladly return all my money after backing the winners of all three championship races thus far, ( :P ) and that includes the forecast in the Champion Hurdle ( :P :P ) for a Kauto Star win.

Forget Arkle winning a third. Best Mate’s hat-trick, or even Dawn Run and Dessie’s triumph – this would bring the house down like never before.

It’s such a hard race to call – some appear too old, some too young, some trainers have been out of form and some may just not be good enough, but if the veterans are too old they just might be up to it!

Not a vintage renewal, but a great race.

(And Kauto…don’t try and kill yourself this year!)

I have been keen on Denman for the Gold Cup for a while now, would be more confident if the ground is on the slower side today.

Ground was pretty similar at Newbury Gaz.

Racing Post standard times yesterday, the strongly run races were just slightly "fast".

Hennessey (winner) was 6.19 seconds fast. With Denman giving masses of weight all around, third place there was a great effort.

Yesterday’s action also suggested a pace bias towards prominent runners.

My main worry is: If he was going well at home, would he have had a wind op? The drift is disconcerting. I’ve backed him (with Imperial Commander), might go in again if RUK paddock judges think he’s looking well. On all his best performances he’s looked a picture. In the Aon last year, looked poor in the paddock.

I didn’t realise the time was so fast at Newbury. I’ve been thinking Denman would run a huge race in the Gold Cup but needed rain. Could still run a big race if he doesn’t find conditions too quick.

I think though Imperial Commander will win again.

Can’t see Imperial Commander winning today. I reckon he’ll drop out 2 from home.

My money is with Midnight Chase with Pandroama and Denman getting some attention. No need to sing any of their praises as it’s all been said before, but what i am interested in is who will make the running with Midnight Chase and another favourite of mine Carruthers being blitzers.

I reckon Carruthers will take up the running again and Midnight Chase will lead his own race with the other bunch, similar to the Grand National last year. I reckon Carruthers will find maybe 2 lengths on Midnight Chase who in turn will be 2 lengths on the rest of them, allowing both of them to run their own races.

And i reckon Carruthers is amazing value at 66’s. Here’s a clearly talented horse who came a very credible 4th last year missing out on 3rd by a short head and then went on to come second in another grade 1 3 miler at Aintree so he has class in him and lets face it last season was very kind to him, which is ammunition enough, but then there’s this season. Last season he was given a proper Gold Cup prep, whereas this year he’s been given, for all intends and purposes a Grand National prep, granted he doesn’t hold an entry, but his work this year resembles a horse targeting the National or other marathon tests rather than the Gold Cup, but that’s not to say he doesn’t still have the right turn of foot to place again this year…?

I think we could be set up for quite a brutal Gold Cup this year with both Carruthers & Midnight Chase able to set a demanding gallop for those in behind.

Although my money is down on others I keep getting the image of Tidal Bay nonchalantly bouncing up the Cheltenham hill like Pepe Le Pew gliding past the others as if time has stood still!

Have been against Tidal Bay all season, flattered in coming from behind off an overly strong pace in the Betfair. However, it is possible to see his indolent display halfway around, dropping himself out when the pace is at it’s strongest, and then relenting to pass most of the field. Can’t quite see him winning, place bet only may be? But you never know.

China Rock is my outsider to do well. Ground should suit and Carberry had one of his mares last time. Would have finished close to Kempes without going for home so early. Just look at the difference in prices here!

P.S. Time For Rupert is a cracking bet for the CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP 2012 thread.

I could have Tidal Bay on really soft ground but surely it’ll all happen too quickly for him on a sound surface??

Cant see past past Imperial Commander. An enormous price at 4/1 given his gigantic performance in this 12 months ago. The only small negative is last years race having left a mark on him. More than factored into the price. Also took 1.8 Imperial Commander to beat Long Run and 1.8 Denman to beat Kauto Star, in match bets. On the evidence of the King George I dont think Long Run will stay.

    Enjoy the big race! :)

Sometimes, Ginger – your form reading slays me!
Maybe you’d like to explain how old boats like Halcon Genelardais and Notre Pere were still within 4 lengths of the lead less than 6f from home?

    Don’t see your point Reet.
Notre Pere and Halcon G weren’t in this season’s Betfair Chase

Best result would be for Kauto to run an honourable race and then be retired. Feeling very nervous.
