CPS went out in a blaze of glory, giving Energumene a fright; surprised at his retirement, probably had a few good races left in him, and relatively lightly-raced

Sandalwood who was pulled up sharply by Harry Cobden at Newton Abbot on Sunday 23 July has been retired after breaking down and damaging a front tendon. Owners Group sent a video out today and, baring accidents or infections etc, should recover in time and then be found a good home. He is currently bandaged up on box rest at Paul Nicholls, but they hope to be able to move him soon to EquiPrep to have all the time needed to recover. While he looked a bit subdued, he was very calm and relaxed and was even able to rest up one of his hind legs while standing.🥰

Can’t help thinking he could have achieved more. Happy retirement though.

A NH stallion at Coolmore; sums up everything wrong with the current breeding scene, particularly in the UK & Ireland.

Doubt Hurricane Lane would’ve ever been a Flat stallion, certainly not any time in the last 30 years Andy – not just currently. Round actioned and needed give in the ground and a mile and a half plus to be fully effective. For me, all shouts that Hurricane Lane will always be more valuable as a National Hunt stallion.

Good to see a Godolphin racehorse going to a Coolmore stud.

    Happy retirement Hurricane Hane.

Little Big Bear has retired due to suffering a condylar fracture on the right front fetlock.

Aidan O’Brien: “Little Big Bear is a super horse; that’s the long and the short of it. Different class, different gear and matured very early for a big horse. He’s big, scopey, strong, clear winded and very, very fast – a class sprinter.”

An alternative take – an exceptionally mature 2yo who patently didn’t make anything like the requisite weight-for-age improvement from two to three and doesn’t seem to be particularly sound either.

Could breed more of the same – fast juveniles, who probably need to race on overwatered slop to offset any inherited frailties.

Coolmore retired a loopy two year old to stud last year. Now they are adding a crock.

No doubt in about three years time O’Brien will be saying one of their offspring is “the best we have ever had”.
