Highway one o two @ 20’s
That race on Boxing day has thrown up a couple of big handicap winners in recent years. Last years winner had a similar run in it to him when finishing second behind higher rated rivals and Mohaayed went on to win the County hurdle that season after finishing behind Buveur D’Air and The New One.
Take out the winner it was not a bad run after going toe to toe with Constitution Hill and giving Epetante 7 lbs to finish third. Not a race the Irish have much success in and they have not won it for 50 year.
Hacker Des Places @ 33’s
Quite an eyecatching run i thought when second to H1O2 at Ascot and been off since then. At the weights should have a similar type of chance. No idea if that price is available like so will pop into my local Ladbrokes to find out in the morning.
January 10, 2023 at 20:49 #1630433I seem to remember Ra Nova finishing third to Gaye Brief and Dawn Run in the Christmas Hurdle, most saying don’t trust Pattern form (even though the time was decent) in a Handicap and the horse being 33/1 for this ante-post.
Started 16/1 and made all and hosed up at Newbury.
Maybe that’s a good omen!

January 10, 2023 at 21:36 #1630436Nathan’s got Gaelic Warrior in a related-contingency double to win the Boat Race and the Champions’ League.

I’ll be going to Newbury if Gaelic Warrior is in town, Ian
my lad can walk to drama club, he’ll probably forget to lock the door but the house needs a tidy up, so burglary’s welcomeBlackbeard to conquer the World
January 10, 2023 at 21:48 #1630439You’ll be only half an hour from me, Nathan – be scared, very scared.
If Gaelic Warrior can run off anything like his Irish OR of 134 I reckon there’s only one winner, but I could see the BHA Handicapper adding anything up to 10lb to that.

My thinking is that Mullins is testing the water.
If the handicapper slaughters him he’ll run in the Ballymore or Supreme. If he has around the same Irish rating then he may look at a handicap at Cheltenham as a possibility.
He could of course win at Clonmel on Thursday by another 87 lengths get hammered by the handicapper anywayBlackbeard to conquer the World
January 11, 2023 at 12:07 #1630483I’ve got 2 early fancies here. I think that Might I is a possibility back in trip here at 14-1, and at 33-1 I also like Tritonic
I’ll bet one of them in the next few days
January 11, 2023 at 14:58 #1630520Inspection at Clonmel tomorrow
if it gets called off you’d expect Gaelic Warrior would need a run somewhere before Cheltenham
this race could be itBlackbeard to conquer the World
January 11, 2023 at 15:02 #1630522Are the firms NRNB for this or is it ante-post rules? If NRNB surely wise to back Gaelic as he won’t be 4/1 on the day if he runs, if not then ignore me lol
January 11, 2023 at 15:12 #1630526Nothing NRNB at the moment Ben.
I wouldn’t have a clue how serious they are of him running here. Does Mullins run many in this race? I can’t think off the top of my head.
They’d more than likely want to give him another run before Cheltenham though, inexperience cost him last year and hes only had the one run since. I’m just thinking where he might go if Clonmel gets axedBlackbeard to conquer the World
January 11, 2023 at 16:49 #1630540Clonmel off but its been rescheduled for Tuesday
Blackbeard to conquer the World
January 11, 2023 at 19:36 #1630563I’m a huge Might I fan , def playing e.w , if he turned up like he did at Aintree then he could run a big race
January 11, 2023 at 19:46 #1630567I’d swear I read in the racing post that Might I was a very unlikely runner
Edit
Fry has also entered 2021 Tolworth winner Metier and Might I for the Newbury contest but the pair are expected to head to Lingfield for the Winter Million festival instead.
He said: “Metier and Might I are both due to run at Lingfield’s Winter Million card next weekend, so we’ve got the entry just in case for the Betfair Hurdle. There’s no immediate plans to take either of them there though, it’s all about Lingfield.
“The focus is Gin Coco. We’ll see if he’s good enough, but he’s run some nice races, so hopefully he can keep progressing and be competitive.”

January 11, 2023 at 21:08 #1630581How do you put a mark on a horse which won its last race by 86 lengths?
The third and fourth home that day have Irish ORs of 89 and 87.
You could rate Gaelic Warrior anything from 129 – the mark it was second off in the Fred Winter – to 183, making it the best hurdler EVER and better then Constitution Hill.
The 134 it is on at the moment is as big a pure guess as you’ll ever see from an Official Handicapper ever.
And while Gaelic Warrior’s highly unlikely to be the best hurdler ever, he’s highly unlikely to be just a 134 horse either.
It will be interesting to see what the BHA Handicapper gives him in this and even more interesting to see, if he runs, how he gets on.
Some say it’s a big step up into open company from novices, but novices have done alright in this in recent years.
I think he’s a 150 horse and if he gets to run off circa 140 he will take a lot of beating in this, one of the all-time great Jumping “plot” contests.

Cheers Nathan, shrewd shout by yourself to suggest that Mullins may have entered him here purely to get a feel for what mark the british handicapper will give him with regards to whether send him to a handicap or group race at Cheltenham. Will be interesting to see whether he takes up his entry or not!
