Found it interesting to see how BBC News has a piece today about the 30 year anniversary of the National Lottery. A celebration of the Lottery. Nothing about 16 year olds gambling when it was first introduced. Nothing about people getting addicted through betting far more than they can afford on the National Lottery and scratch cards. Nothing about the chance of winning actually being minute.

Yet if it were the anniversary about something to do with horse racing am sure it would be far more “balanced”.

Difference between how horse racing is treated and other forms of gambling are also different.

Playing the stock markets is basically a form of gambling – but that’s okay……

What always frustrates me is the Lottery is pure luck; there is no looking at form, and digging for clues, but it’s seen as okay, whereas gambling on horses is looked down upon.

Almost all digital free-to-air channels resort to plugging bingo, casinos, lotteries etc after a certain hour (to be fair, not the BBC) all night. Likewise social media (and you can’t block it). I don’t have any evidence to back it up (because none exists) but I reckon horse racing is well down the list of things that problem gamblers bet on. People who think it is base their “experience” on Kes.

All of the above is true but we cannot get away from the fact that racing provokes a more emotional response from some people because it involves animals.
