How many Champion Hurdle horses did he get to train?Kind of blows away the arguement that he only wins with lots of horses. How many Gold Cups wins did he have with one horse?Same problem right?Sorry that bucket won’t hold water.
June 16, 2012 at 07:57 #408231I thought this thread is about singular training feats of a particular horse, often through adversity, not who’s been the best trainer of recent times?
June 16, 2012 at 08:16 #408235I know that my nomination may not be popular in all quarters, but Nicky Henderson for getting See You Then to Cheltenham 3 times, never mind actually winning 3 Champion Hurdles. A great training feat.
June 16, 2012 at 08:19 #408240One that springs to my mind is Pam Sly for beating the big guns (O’ Brien, Gosden, Hannon, Suroor, etc) with Speciosa in the 2006 1000 Guineas.
Always makes me smile.
June 16, 2012 at 08:51 #408243Yes that was good, always like a good underdog coming up trumps…Geoff Huffer did something similar with Cockney Rebel in the 2000 a few years later too…
Hen Knight has to be up there also with Best Mate, and Nicholls with Kauto Star in the Betfair Chasevat Haydock…
June 16, 2012 at 10:46 #408268Bob Sevier’s feat of winning 4 classics in the same year(1902 I think), with SAME HORSE (Sceptre) takes some beating. Especially as she started off her season running in the Lincoln Handicap (2nd – yes, 3yo’s could run in the Lincoln in those days)) She also finished 4th in the Derby.
June 16, 2012 at 10:57 #408272Hate to be boring but Micahel Dickinson getting 5 horses to post for the Cheltenham Gold Cup was on it’s own a great achievement but he achieved the near impossible when they were the first 5 home…Kinda hard act to follow. This has widely been recognized as the greatest training achievement of all time.

I think he topped that with Da Hoss.

FYI that first WVBC disqualification was due to a Clenbuterol positive.June 16, 2012 at 21:14 #408330If that were Ballydoyle there would be uproar about Aidan entering a herd of horses.Aidan does not get the accolades no matter how many races he wins.He was first, secondand third in the Irish Derby a couple of years ago and got nothing but yawns for his achievementy. So winning all four of the English classics so far is boring because Godolphin or Sir Henry didn’t do it.Aidan even does it with his son riding the Derby winner. What more must he do? Win all BC races on the same day?
June 16, 2012 at 21:23 #408331How about Paddy Mullins winning the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup with Dawn Run?

Ariston…
June 17, 2012 at 09:34 #408344Rakti won the Derby Italiano under the care of Bruno Grizzetti. While he may not have been the easiest horse to train, especially as he got older, the biggest challenge was Robbo getting him to settle in his races.
Alec Stewart managing to train Maylane at all was a remarkable feat, being able to get him to win a group 3 was incredible. Saaed Bin Suroor could do nothing with him so he was sent back and while not reaching his previous level of form, he did manage to get him sweet enough to win again.
Toby Balding’s handling of Morley Street also sticks in the mind as I doubt he would have achieved as much under anyone else’s care.
How these compare with John Porter’s handling of Ormonde I’m sure is impossible to tell, but his victory over Minting in the Hardwicke when he had gone in his wind is still a monumental feat.

I’d agree. That was a truly great training performance from a truly great trainer.
Speciosa – helped enormously by the overnight rain that year, as i’m quite certain that Nannina would have won had the ground stayed quick.
AOB has been helped this year by other trainers being slow to start / short of suitable horses. Suroor has 6 turf wins this season. Stoute has 11 – two of those in the last couple of days. ( Definitely taking note for Ascot )
That’s very poor by their standards.
June 17, 2012 at 11:50 #408356I think Mark Johnston deserves a special mention for his efforts in turning Shamardal into the champion that he was considering the horse’s health problems in early life.
June 17, 2012 at 15:34 #408380Vincent O’Brien ! Need I say more.

Champion Hurdle (3 times ) , Cheltenham Gold Cup ( 4 times ), Grand National ( 3 times ), Derby ( 6 ) , Oaks ( 2 ), Guineas – Irish & English ( 13 ) , Arc ( 3 ), Washington International and Breeders’ Cup etc.
Training feats don’t come much better than that.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
June 17, 2012 at 18:15 #408412My personal favourite is David Nicholson getting Moorcroft Boy back from a life-threatening neck injury to win the 1996 Scottish Grand National. That was pure magic.
June 17, 2012 at 19:53 #408415AOB has won 5 classics in the same season the best trainer ever IMO
