thanks for pointing that out, am suprised the rp made no mention of this . but henderson dosnt seem worried and it seems now an even better performence
February 14, 2002 at 16:51 #98581Yeah Prince………I think Henderson just wanted all the info he could get first and then give a through explanation of what was wrong and what will happen.I intend to take a proce about him tomorrow to go along with my e/w Pearl and win on Sackville then I’ll leave it!
February 14, 2002 at 18:39 #98582Legal Right is by no means consistent, so the form book is not of much use with him.
However, on his day he has unsusual ability which is why I say I would give him a squeak. He won’t be carrying any of my money, but if he runs his best race he will be thereabouts. More likely that he won’t be though.
February 14, 2002 at 19:30 #98583This is building up to be one of the most open Gold Cups in recent years. In my opinion its between 3 horses: Bacchanal, Looks Like Trouble and Best Mate. Looks like trouble looked good when winning at wincanton and he’s reportedly improved for the run. Also, as someone else said, theres been no negative vibes from the stable so he lines up with a big chance.
Best Mate beat Bacchanal in the King George and McCoy thought he would’ve won with different tactics. However im siding with Bacchanal over Best Mate as he will appreciate the extra trip and steeper finish. Hopefully his jumping to the right will be non existant at Cheltenham aswell as he’s being trained by…..erm some expert or somethin  . Florida Pearl of course beat them both at Kempton but seems a bit inconsistant (unfair?) and won’t stay up the hill.
This leaves it between Bacchanal and LLT for me.
February 14, 2002 at 20:31 #98584It’s highly unlikely that whatever ailed Bacchanal at Newbury had any effect at all during the race when he was running on adrenaline. Anyone who’s suffered a knock while playing football will know what I mean – it hurts when you stop.
Regarding Best Mate, I accept that to some extent the horse has been hyped and to that degree is indeed a "talking horse" but that’s not the horse’s fault and I think that people are allowing this to blind them to the horse’s merits. No, he hasn’t won under rules over three miles but he’s only had one stab at the trip after all and his narrow defeat by Florida Pearl at Kempton clearly represents high-class form at the distance (and, incidentally, he was going away from Bacchanal at the finish). If you ignore the hype, a lightly-raced seven-year-old with improvement in him and high-class form already in the book fits the Gold Cup bill. Of course, he might not stay but then again he might. If it comes down to jumping between him and Bacchanal, I know which one I’d prefer.
February 14, 2002 at 22:35 #98585This Gold Cup is going to be fantastic. Although I think Trouble has the best credentials, I hope for the sake of the sport that Best Mate can get the extra quarter mile. Frankly I don’t know what will happen; he could stop in his tracks at the second last. But he wasn’t stopping at Kempton, and he’s always gone well at Cheltenham.
February 15, 2002 at 09:53 #98586Spot on Esc.
The one big thing in Legal Right’s favour is his trainer – Jonjo. He certainly knows how to get the most out of a horse. If Legal Right has the ability to run well in Gold Cup, Jonjo will get it out of him. Maybe Liam Cooper will be riding him too, which would be a plus in my book.
Still, hard to fancy on overall form i’m not sure i’d want to be on such a fragile horse.
Regarding LLT’s injury – he’s recovered. He’s ok and Noel Chance has made sure the horse is well looked after during training. I don’t think he’ll be breaking down in the GC.

noel chance is an excellent trainer whom looks after his horses at all times and i do hope your right about a full recovery but his legs will be tested far more in the gc than either at wincanton or in training gallops
the true test has yet to come
March 14, 2002 at 20:30 #98588Once in a while a race goes exactly as you envisaged it and today’s Gold Cup was one such race. I can’t think why I particularly wanted to resurrect this thread but page 5 might have something to do with it. Congratulations to Best Mate and all who kept the faith. I can’t stand people who say told you so but…told you so.
March 14, 2002 at 23:30 #98589Esc…spoken like a gentleman.
March 15, 2002 at 09:00 #98590Well done to Best Mate. I didn’t think he’d stay or had the class. He obviously has both and he’s a decent horse.
It will be interesting to see how the form of the front three works out. Gus said, "Once in a while a race goes exactly as you envisaged it and today’s Gold Cup was one such race."
I can say exactly the opposite! :) I didn’t not expect Best Mate to win, i didn’t expect Commanche Court to finish second ahead some horses who have appeared classier and i certainly didn’t think 12 year old See More Business to make the frame.
For See More Business to make the frame here was a superb performance. He won the Gold Cup in 1999 and it is fair to say that he’s not as good now as he was then…which makes me think, he must have been one heck of a horse a few years ago. He’s obviously still very good now but i think he was better then.
Well done again to Best Mate, i was certainly a doubter and happy to be proved wrong by the horse!
March 15, 2002 at 11:43 #98591With the exception of SMB running so well, the race wasn’t that surprising for me. Best Mate oozes class but I couldn’t back him on the grounds that he might not stay. I did however, have a lumpy bet on Commanche Court who is just the sort of horse that runs well in the Gold Cup – a tough stayer who jumps well (apart from at the bloody second last when in front – humbug), trained for the race by a shrewd cookie, big-field form and a decent ground lover.I think the form will stand up and I am sure we have seen a great champion.
March 17, 2002 at 23:22 #98592Just reread this thread and am disappointed that only Escorial has stepped foward to eat his humble pie. Come on you doubters stand up and be counted !!
March 18, 2002 at 09:29 #98593Jjimps – add me to the "humble pie" list, see my last post before this one :)
March 19, 2002 at 11:36 #98594Ahah Rob yes so I see !!
I backed Alexander Banquet so I could probably do with a slice of pie myself. For me though this was the race of the Festival a new star is born ?? I didn’t mind losing my money one bit and sprinted to the winners enclosure to cheer BM in. It seems Hens ‘cotton wool’ treatment worked.
March 19, 2002 at 11:40 #98595It remains to be seen how the form works out. I thought it looked a good Gold Cup before hand but now i’m not so sure.
Best Mate’s proved me wrong once…i’m sure he can do it again!
