June 6, 2007 at 16:30 #63439I think like columnists from various parts of the media, Mordin says a lot of stuff just to be controversial. I think the problem with speed ratings is that, like any other form of rating or selection method, following them blindly is all too common. And how Mordin can give speed ratings for the majority of French Group races I’ll never know.

June 6, 2007 at 16:56 #63441As I remember from reading one of Andy Beyer’s books, he spent a fair amount of time on explaining how SF should not be taken at face value and due consideration should be given to how they were earned (with particular reference to pace bias, track bias, trouble in running etc.) as well as also being sometimes suspicious about one off outstanding figures.
Mordin these days sometimes gives the impression that he merely cranks the speed figures out mechanically in a few minutes at the end of the day and takes the bare figures as gospel from then on. You could call it speed figure fundamentalism. Mordin in a turban and straggly beard posting ever more outrageous claims on his website (which by the way has to be the most depressing looking website out there).
