Had UDS run today he could’ve been in the shake up, perhaps getting to an RPR of 178 – if he stayed 2m 5f on Soft in a Grade 1 (not yet proven). At 2m he comfortably disposed of Speredek by 7L, 2m is more Speredek’s trip but the latter was even more comprehensively thrashed today.
Everyone in the media and on here is saying how excellent the race was today, the pace/clock tells the same tale and it should be rated accordingly. Cue Card was RPR 180+ rated at his peak and he wasn’t far off that today. Look at how far the first two beat Frodon and Top Notch. Or, Shantou Flyer was beaten 15L by CC in this last year and by 17L (basically at levels) by Frodon recently at Cheltenham – and now Frodon has been beaten 18L by Waiting Patiently, 15L by CC. The RP have CC at 173 in this last year, 170 for today!!! They and you doubters are so wrong, CC has to have run to at least a 5 better RPR of 178 this year in a much stronger renewal. That’s race or form reading!
At 12, I don’t fancy CC to produce another effort like that in 3 weeks and WP may not even go to the Festival, especially if it’s Good so the form may not be tested there.
February 17, 2018 at 20:23 #1342829I think you have a fair point there Golden Miller. The more I look at it the more I have to agree that Cue Card somehow reproduced his old sparkle. He jumped a lot better today, even better than in some of his G1 wins. He never got in there too tight, he looked very fluent and WP had to be driven out to the line in order to keep him at bay.
I’d love to see Cue Card in the Ryanair now and also WP joining him in that race. Could easily be the race of the Festival. And yes, it should be a mid 170s performance by the winner and CC should get about 172/173 for this.
February 17, 2018 at 21:38 #1342842Daryl Jacob said Top Notch is better on better ground before the race so its possible he’ll do better at the festival.
February 17, 2018 at 21:59 #1342845Waiting Patiently didn’t pull himself up Joe – he shied at the photographer who was just after the line.
Twitter suggests the photographer was standing beyond his agreed position and has been suspended.
February 17, 2018 at 23:29 #1342849I just can’t get over Cue Card; 12 years old and he runs a race like that…..
February 17, 2018 at 23:52 #1342850It is all about Cheltenham though isn’t it. It’s all I think about. Do enjoy Christmas racing and aintree but I spend every day thinking about Cheltenham throughout the year.
That’s why I’m so in love with National hunt racing in comparison with he flat. Yes the flat has royal ascot but nothing gets me excited on the flat like Cheltenham.
Some of you said that attitude is what’s wrong with jumps racing but for me having an ‘Olympics’ like Cheltenham is why I love and prefer jumps to the flat so it’s had a positive effect on my love for jumps not negative.February 18, 2018 at 02:50 #1342867I am happy with Waiting Patiently. I fancied him and went in at 7/2 early.
I am not sure what people want from the horse. He keeps winning, and as Groucho Marx said in A Day At The Races, “I don’t need them any better than first”
I will leave arguing the ratings.
In my opinion Waiting Patiently had the race in the bag from some way out. He came there travelling all over Cue Card and IF Cue Card was near his best ever today, Waiting Patiently has thrashed him in reality. If Waiting Patiently had jumped the last better he would have come home more comfortably.
The reality of the race is the Coney Island was beat very early in the race. Top Notch never travelled like he would win, with Waiting Patiently going much more easily throughout the race. Frodon was a bit in and out of the race and probably came in overrated to a fair degree.
Cue Card ran OK and has probably recorded a reasonable figure, certainly nowhere near his peak. Waiting Patiently has recorded a personal best but certainly nothing like some of the silly numbers I have seen.
I won’t put a number on it. Nobody would pay any attention anyway.
Best horse won it totally fair and square.
Paddy Power are reckoning that he doesn’t go to the Ryanair, as they are 6/1. He’s half those odds in places. Who knows? I took 8/1 and if he doesn’t go, that’s just fairly typical of the way it pans out. I certainly would not be rushing to take Top Notch at as low as 4/1 after his latest effort.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
February 18, 2018 at 10:07 #1342877PP must have clipped him back in Steve as he’s showing as 10/3 with them now…
I agree with jasolong…Cheltenham is what gets me going…it’s why I much prefer jumps to flat. I know many don’t feel that way but there is plenty that do.
Aintree is ok but to me just never feels even 10% as good as Cheltenham…
I don’t know whether Ruth Jefferson was misquoted or not? The interview she did with Nick Luck on RUK was very fair and she spoke very well…she said it’s not the be all and end all to them, which is fair enough..
If the ground has a bit of cut in though and the horse is well enough in himself I don’t see why they wouldn’t give it a go? I’m not a fan of Let’s save it for another day, because what if that day doesn’t come? I don’t think it’s any good saying we think he’s better on flatter tracks without seeing evidence that he doesn’t act at somewhere like Cheltenham…

It’s been debated enough of course but I far prefer a rolling narrative rather than “it’s all bout one day” bollocks.
The best race of the season isn’t even run at cheltenham. It’s run in sunbury at Christmas
February 18, 2018 at 10:40 #1342881Yeah, Steve, Top Notch might be placed at best.
You say you’ll leave the ratings but then discuss merit of performance. The race has to be rated around Cue Card. Steve Mason of Racing Post Ratings has completely lost the plot to rate Cue Card 170 compared to 173 in the same contest last year, Tom Segal discusses the race and re Cue Card concludes “…tells me he’s every bit as good as he ever was.” (180)!
Bryony Frost has admitted she was wrong to get involved in the early pace on Frodon. Considering that and the fact he is very best on Heavy he still ran ok, about half a stone below last time which was not overrated (169).
February 18, 2018 at 11:18 #1342886I was a Cue Card backer, but I have no complaints with that race. What a very worthy winner he was and he was definitely the best horse in the race. Old Cue Card was great too
February 18, 2018 at 12:26 #1342890Agree with @steve on his summary and views.
On my phone so not going to go into ratings etc until I’ve my laptop at hand.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!February 18, 2018 at 13:00 #1342893Jasolong; I used to feel that way about the National, so I know where you’re coming from. [still do but because of the internet and forums such as this I can take an interest in racing throughout the year also…]
February 18, 2018 at 14:32 #1342908Considering Cue Card was right in the middle of that insane early pace, I was surprised that he didn’t pay for it more at the end of the race like the others did, proves there is stil most of the fire still there – the way the race was run was set up perfectly for the winner who wisely stayed well off that early pace.
To be honest if they were to meet again I wouldn’t be so sure that the placings would be confirmed particularly if they didn’t make as much use of Cue Card in the early stages. Sounds like he will miss Cheltenham unless it is soft – although two of his last three wins have been on good to soft so it will be interesting as to whether they have a change of heart if that is what we get come Ryanair day.
If he is an out and out soft ground horse, could mean we won’t see much of him at the likes of Cheltenham/Aintree which would be a shame but then they should be looking at travelling over to Ireland more as he is pretty much guaranteed to get his conditions and there is a lot of money on offer especially given that not many challengers from this side of the sea go over there.
February 18, 2018 at 14:41 #1342914Harty’s last winner over jumps in Ireland was a year ago.
1 winner from about 73 runners on both sides of the Irish Sea. Utterly appalling.
February 18, 2018 at 14:47 #1342916Has anyone heard anything from the Coney Island camp as of yet?
February 18, 2018 at 15:15 #1342918All I’ve heard Charles is that he lost a shoe during the race
