It looks like Warhorse was rated about 20lb inferior to Champagne Fever. So as CF seemed to run to form, it looks like Warhorse improved by about 20lb since January. This is almost a Barney Curley sort of improvement. In fact there was a stewards enquiry but nobody queried the massive improvement in Warhorse’s form.I suppose he’s a young horse with a top trainer, so there isn’t anything suspicious but it all seems a bit odd to me.

The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference on the run in. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that CHAMPAGNE FEVER (IRE), placed second, ridden by Ruby Walsh, had interfered with the winner, WESTERN WARHORSE (IRE), ridden by Tom Scudamore. The Stewards found Walsh in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he switched his whip to his left hand when his mount was already moving to its right. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.

They further enquired into the use of the whip by Tom Scudamore, the rider of the winner, WESTERN WARHORSE (IRE), on the run in. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip in an incorrect place. The Stewards suspended Scudamore for 2 days as follows: Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 March 2014.

HUGE cheer in the office when the Warhorse started to wear down Champagne Fever, traders hugging each other, people declaring undying love for Tom Scu…incredible scenes.

Best moment of Cheltenham for me so far!

Cost me a small fortune so worst moment for me I’m afraid! Are you a bookie lover TYF?!

I love a bit of the old ‘Grassy Knoll / Fake Moon Landing’ theorising as much as the next loony, but I think this is pushing things a bit, scratch that its plain nuts mate! The horse is 6yo and has ran ONCE over fences under rules!

I’m with you on this Rich, this was my banker of the day and I bet it accordingly. It doesn’t really help that someone is whooping it up at my, and others misfortune :?

He did go off at a Betfair SP of 48 and industry SP of 33 and he never ran very fast over hurdles, so it is a massive and unexpected improvement. I had expected to see a bit more querying or explanation (e.g wind op) but I haven’t come across any. I am sure if this had happened at Wolverhampton people would have said it was a fix, but as it’s a reputable trainer, track etc I am sure it’s all above board.

the winner jumped fast and well – went off fast then settled in behind. It is possible that they went off too fast and then for home too soon and looks to me that only CF stayed on up the hill as they all seemed to be caught for toe. Was it the winners 2nd race over fences ? – to jump at that pace as well – was a breathtaking race to watch at that pace. Clearly liked the better ground. It appears that the irish form was similar to the english and not very much above given the close proximity of the 4th and 5th. Put that together with the fact that they have been racing on much softer ground for most of the winter, the winner might have been waiting for this ground.

This will probably not be the only surprise given the recent ground condition change which has really only happened in the last couple of weeks.

    Misfortune?
They best horse won on the day, didn’t it?

I just enjoyed being around so many happy people. I didn’t back Western Warhorse myself, but the buzz he created was something else.

The misfortune I am talking about had nothing to do with the best horse winning or Champagne Fever losing, it was, along with Rich, comment on our bet going down the drain.

Unless I have got the wrong end of the stick, your post is about traders being ecstatic about Champagne Fever getting beat "huge cheer in the office when Warhorse started to wear down Champagne Fever, traders hugging each other, people declaring undying love for Tom Scu"

Unless you mean they all had a hefty bet on Warhorse, in which case I take my hat off to them, then I very much would imagine they were celebrating Champagne Fever getting beat as their liabilities on the horse would have been quite big.

That was my point, it had nothing to do with the whether the best horse won or not, it was comment on people celebrating CF getting beaten. I also wasn’t having a go at you TYF, merely comment on the traders you mention being more than a little pleased CF got stuffed.

I’ve been backing Champagne Fever all year for this and it’s hard to see how he was ‘unlucky’. Jumped well and just idled and caught late home, no luck involved unfortunately.

Slight side note, but those who still think MTOY is a battler ought to remember he could not pass CF last year.

JJM, he wasn’t unlucky, he was beaten fair and sqaure, I’m not sure why you said that.

My post to TYF was a response to his comment that a bunch of traders were going cock a hoop over over Champagne Fever getting beat, as opposed to to someone celebrating over Western Warhorse winning. I didn’t suggest, and I don’t think Champagne Fever was unlucky.

My comment about misfortune was directly related to the traders reaction, being delighted about the misfortune of God knows how many punters losing their bet.

I’m well aware that bookies will be be well pleased when fancied horses get stuffed, it’s just not a thing that generally gets celebrated in this forum.
