Loved the commentator’s comment on the home turn when he said ‘Wise Men Say making ground under unorthodox handling’. Brilliant.
Just watched the re-run on RUK – sounds like it was Martin Harris enjoying Mr Knott’s virtuoso display.

November 21, 2008 at 12:30 #191030Yes. Jeremy, it was Martin Harris, and to go slightly off-topic, he offered two copies of his and Iain McKenzie’s new annual in a competition on RUK yesterday.
The question : In the 1983 edition of the annual what horse was described as a Rolls-Royce amongst Robin Reliants in Hunter Chases?
There were some very strange answers read out, two that I can remeber were Venn Ottery and Mtoto!!!
I’m sure you know the answer without looking it up, Jeremy.

November 21, 2008 at 14:33 #191041I hope I’m not about to disappoint, Colin! That’s not a copy of the Annual that I own, and I was eight years old at the time, though those aren’t really very good excuses.
From what hunter chasers I can remember reading about the most in the Sporting Chronicle back then, I’m going to have to guess at one of;
Atha Cliath
Border Burg
Cheekio Ora
Eliogarty
Flying Ace
Otter WayAm I warm?

November 21, 2008 at 14:35 #191042Not even close
November 21, 2008 at 14:42 #191043Oh hang on, the 1983 Annual would have been written in regard of the 1982 season, wouldn’t it. And 1982 was all about….
GRITTAR.
Closer?

November 21, 2008 at 15:24 #191052Nope
November 21, 2008 at 15:28 #191053And I thought he’d have been a good thing to know the answer.
November 21, 2008 at 15:40 #191054Jeremy this horse won a Cheltenham Gold Cup – does that give it away?
November 21, 2008 at 16:00 #191057Bregawn? Master Smudge? Little Owl? Silver Buck? Midnight Court? Davy Lad? Burrough Hill Lad? Forgive N Forget? Arsington Sodmonster?
(Note to self: fill the missing gaps in your collection, and pronto, Tonto…

November 21, 2008 at 16:01 #191058Hurrah! Well done. The correct answer was of course Arsington Sodmonster.
Oh hang on no it’s not.
November 21, 2008 at 16:38 #191069It’s one of those, Jeremy.

November 21, 2008 at 16:43 #191072bregawn
November 21, 2008 at 16:44 #191074No
November 21, 2008 at 16:48 #191076He didn’t qualify for the Foxhunters at Cheltenham, which may be putting you away. He was also still winning races six years after his Gold Cup win which is a rare thing.
November 21, 2008 at 16:50 #191077Ach, then I guess that rules out any of those that went on to Gold Cup glory.
So, in as much as I know he was campaigned forever, I’m going to plump for…
MASTER SMUDGE
(((awaits further Q.I-style klaxons)))
