I think 2012 Foxhunter winner Salsify fits the bill.
September 23, 2012 at 10:39 #414000Wasn’t even the one I was thinking of
, but over to you!September 24, 2012 at 09:08 #414066Two Cheltenham Gold Cup winners of the 1980’s took similar crashing falls at the last flight of hurdles at Kempton early in their careers, which left both winded for some time, and spectators fearing the worst. Name them both.

Dessie correct. Not Forgive’n Forget, though.

Burrough Hill Lad.
Then trained by Jimmy Harris, I think, although may have been Harry Wharton. I’m sure Hurdygurdyman will refresh my memory!
Well done Ivanjica – your turn.
September 29, 2012 at 09:25 #414517I was at Market Rasen in the early 80’s when Phil Tuck who must have been barely 20 and was still an apprentice rode Burrough Hill Lad to his first ever win. That was for Jimmy Harris he then went to Harry Wharton and I think Phil won a couple of races on him there before he was moved to Jenny Pitman and Phil kept the mount there as well. So 2 out of 2 Rory
September 29, 2012 at 20:31 #414612That would have been 1979 I reckon. The horse he was challenging when falling at Kempton was none other than Corbiere, btw. Bet you can’t remember who won the race in which BHL made his chase debut, although, knowing you, he’ll be a horse you remember very fondly.
September 30, 2012 at 07:37 #414637I remember losing a few quid on him very early in his career he was beaten by Silver Buck but that was the race Silver Buck was winning for thr 4th time at Haydock so it must have been the season before. If memory serves me well he was unplaced but I haven’t got the faintest idea what won the race…….81 to 83 good horses I would remember? Border Incident but he’d be too old by then. Bregawn and The Mighty Mack would have been a novices about the same time as would the Fred Winter pair Observe and Fifty Dollars More, Fitz’s Canny Danny and Galway Blaze other than that I’m pretty much stumped
Never new about Corbiere and him meeting ceases to amaze me how many horses clash when they are very young and go on to be top notchers in different sphere’s later in life.
Frankel and Nathaniel being the most recent example I can think of.

It was another ex-Wharton inmate, in the shape of Richdee, who started favourite for the 1981 Stayers Hurdle for Captain Neville Crump, and again when well held in the Sun Alliance Chase behind Brown Chamberlin the following year. He was the horse who came closest to spoiling Dickinson’s "Famous Five" Gold Cup, but never really fulfilled his huge early promise as a chaser.
September 30, 2012 at 17:27 #414720I remember him well now he won a really good Novice chase. Chris Hawkins used to ride and he actually finished in front of Francome on Burrough Hill Lad at Haydock when Phil won a big handicap at on Earls Brig for Billy Hamilton who trained at Bonchester Bridge when I lived in Hawick. Phil or Georgdie Dunn rode him in the same race a few years later as a 13 year old and finished 2nd.. He was a bit of a legend round the borders. Bet you you can’t name the two famous big race winners he beat into 2nd and 3rd prior to running in the King George.
btw where is Yeats?

That’s a bad bet, as well you know (Wayward Lad and Forgive’n Forget in the Tommy Whittle)! It was Peter Craggs who used to ride him in hunter chases, although Jimmy Walton took over when he was second to Eliogarty in the 1984 Foxhunters’. Bet even
you
don’t know what odd ailment caused Craggs to miss that big race.
